I think I'd rather see the Diablo gameplay and structure in an MMO graphical setting, a la WoW, than a full blown MMO. I like WoW, but I don't really see the point of remaking Diablo into the same type of game.
I think this kind of hybridization was originally the idea for the Diablo III Blizzard North had worked on before the breakup in 2005:
Max Schaeffer: We wanted to make it a bigger... We actually were going a more MMO route with it. So, it had more players in the game. But, we were very early and it’s the point in a project where you don’t talk to the public about it because so much can change and so much can go on. There’s lots and lots of things that go on at game companies that never hit the light of day, because it’s just too early to really sit and things are subject to change all the time. So, we may have changed our own path radically had we kept going with it. But, at the time our thinking was to go more MMO style with it. With big communities in-game, not just like a session-based -- four-person or eight-person -- or anything like that. But, to really make a big overworld and a giant shared community. (Source)
Kevin Martens (speaking about the 2005 version): There's no discussion about a Diablo MMO anymore. It was a really interesting idea back when we were into it, but I think Diablo has a really strong fantasy on its own. Having a thousand people playing it with you on a server doesn't dramatically increase it. We've learned to love the smaller, more focused party experience of four people. And some people are like, 'Why don't you do five?' I mean, we could, but kinda built the game around four people in mind. So the temptation of expanding the social circle has fallen by the wayside as we learned more about what we enjoy about Diablo. (Source)
And I couldn't find our post about it, but Kotaku's old article still has those cool images for reference. I still have the hardcopy magazine where they published it xD
ya your right...dont plan on seeing anything Starcraft related for a while...Diablo should be up next but i still think its too early for a D4 announcement ...maybe 1 more year before an announcement then 2-3 years after for a release.
I rather them work on D4 then a D3 expansion...even though i enjoyed D3.
Honestly I think SC is up next. SC2 came out before D3, didn't it?
I'm still hoping for a D1/2 remaster for the client :c I guess we kind of got part of that in the D1 January event, which was cool, but :/
So many emokids here , go and play My Little Pony Adventures 7 Golden Edition or PoE, don`t even come here, you will not change the fact that D3 still rock n rolla, and kick ass any other game of this genre, nothing will change the fact that D3 is the 4th most sold game in the history of the videogames and if you seriously think that is dead either you are deeply delusional or plain mentally challenged. We will get soon 2-3 new classes and in the next 2-3 years a new expansion. Druid class will be prolly the next and announced in november prolly.
95-98% of those people have left the game, making it D E A D.
Me, i play every season, for maybe a week, then im out as its not fun to grind paragon for weeks for tiny upgrades.
It's a good point. But as long as you find enjoyment in something, eh. Play it. I played 2 every day after school for years and mostly all I did was mf farm. I think a big part of it is just having people you like being around and doing stuff with them. Many times even great games feel meh without friends.
I think part of the issue too is "special" gear gets thrown at you from even the lowest difficulty almost immediately, so nothing feels special and everything after has to be even more exponentially out-of-control power-wise to feel like a reward. Some of it is, I think, also failures of aesthetics.
The fuck are you necroing the thread almost half year old? The game is not dying, it IS dead, maintenance mode and shit. Same as usual: have some fun for a week or two and move on.
Because it was the most recent thread in its forum (every thread in this forum is last post from 2017) and it's something to talk about. There's so little discussion going on that pretty much any thread would be a necro.
Was also responding to a slightly different topic than the game being dead. Was talking about the MMO aspect as quoted
How about Diablo 3 (RoS) as an (MMORPG) I’d personally
like to see that happen. The game certainly has the
lore & content to make that a reality, but is that very
realistic?
The Diablo 2 team was originally making an isometric MMO of Diablo for 3 until there was a bunch of internal issues, a bunch of people got fired/left, then there was the huge time gap until the team was rebuilt for D3 as we know it today. If you Google it you should be able to find pics still, it was in PC Gamer or IGN or some magazine in like 2011 or some such.
