Come on, you really think that other dungeons would have a different, more Diablo-like look?
Look at D2 caves, dungeons, whatever. You've seen one cave, you've seen them all. Same for dungeons and any other setting. There is one template for each.
Well, that is more by game design and computer requirements in terms of texture memory and cpu resources rather than "it was ment to be like this". Diablo II was a big game in terms of size when it was released, so inevitably they had to reuse the same meshes for the dungeons, thus seeing one cave and you have seen them all except for the layout difference.
The more enemies, sprites (like flames) and complex meshes you'd see, the more fps lag you would get, so to keep it down you instance common objects (walls, gates etc.) so your RAM can hold the same object in memory, and you turn on a fog of war so the game doesn't render what you do not see.
I still remember that many parts of Radament's Lair was a light sand-ish dungeon, The Arcane Sanctuary was pretty light (except for the gray floor texture used), Terror's End was lighted up with red lava and Lam Esen's Tome was a mix of dark and light. The only reason most of them are dark as because of dark stone textures.
finally you have recognized...the demo just looks... have more ploygon than WoW..
Er, no? It's obviously no point discussing here, you have all made up your mind based on prejustice and do whatever it takes to get your point across.
The only point I can come with is I hope Blizzard meets us halfway and have a post-process setting in the video menu, one for the current style of Diablo III, and one for a more desaturated look you want (looking at the images you (meaning "the side" your on) made)..
This should be "fairly simple" to do.. I say it with "" because you'd still have to program it obviously, but it would be far easier than to recode and redo all the lighting and stuff in the game, and if you redo things then obviously those who actually enjoy the Diablo III artstyle will be pissed.
But as for the textures and models (which you obviously are blinded by in some way), if you want that redone you obviously don't want Diablo III in the next 5-7 years.. And I still don't see why you are pissed of something that looks completely different from WoW except ONE freakin shown armorpiece on the barbarian that is inspired by a WoW armorpiece, which obviously is inspired by a typical fantasy armorpiece. I'd love to see you guys come up with a concept armor piece for him that isn't influenced by something in one way or another (especially considering the concept artist WORKS at Blizzard on THEIR IP's and thus work on checking out armor piece references all the time for drawing...).
Things can be bright and at the same time dark and evil looking. you showed it:
It's not only about brightness.
And Diablo III isn't dark and evil looking because it has a little more handpainted texture style and in ONE dungeon that is showed, it has a more green color to it?

Ummm, no. The only thing that picture shows is a gargantuan interface.
Take a look at some meshes which obviously look closely to what we have already seen in D2 (such as the griffin picture).
Interface aside, it still doesn't look like Diablo III in terms of artstyle. Have you even played WoW?
I'm sorry, but that doesn't look like WoW at all, except for the interface (which is obvious, since you took the WoW interface). Heck, if WoW looked like that, I might actually have been happy with it (not that WoW looks bad, but it could look much better)
To quote you: "I have never play WOW", so the only conclusion I have is don't be stupid and speak about something you know nothing about. And you call yourself a true fan, yet are blind to the similarities of act 1, 2, 3 and 5 of Diablo II (in terms of art style) and the looks of Diablo III?
You guys toss up screens of dark places in diablo II like there are no yesterday, but you all obviously seem to forget the not-so-dark places of Diablo II also. Since it's become sport to criticise the art direction of a "colorful" diablo III, saying Diablo II was never this bright and vibrant with color, I have only one question:
Are you guys blind?
Since it seems fashion to throw around screenshots, here are some obvious ones I found:
Less handdrawn style perhaps, but in no way as dark and gritty as you all claim. Sure Diablo II has some dark places, but it wasn't void of light places either. I still can't see the comparison to WoW or Warcraft 3 either, you claim this: http://www.morearnings.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/wow-horde-level-59-1.jpg
looks like Diablo III?
I have only one thing to say: Take off your fckin sunglasses, you are obviously blind O,o...
I've got a question for the developers, regarding this. As far as I see it, one of the good things that Blizzard has done over the years is provide users with alot of options for customizing their game. A good example is all the options world of warcraft has when it comes to customzing interface, graphics, keys etc.
So how hard would it be to throw in a post-process that would desaturate the game more, for those who like a desaturated, dark look on the game, while we (me included) who like the current look of Diablo III also get what we want? Just a simple checkbox or some sort of toggle in the video menu to change the look.
