Really, who are you kidding, how more serious do you want them to look like, the are detailed, dark, gritty, and the WD have bones piercings all over his body, his looks look exactly like how a witch doctor would look like in real life ( if not slightly stylized, because you know what, it is a game, i hope you are not surprised by this revelation )
Is that how serious you want then to look like ( this is the 3D model that the in-game sprite is taken from ), this guy has plastic skin and looks funny as hell, i hope you are not serious about that cause it ain't funny
Anyone can clearly see which one is more Realistic and Gritty, your argument is just funny.
If only those who keep whining would just leave their fanaticism for few seconds and use their minds and eyes to see the fantastic work being made in D3 i'm sure we wouldn't have any whining problems at all.
I don't really see any skin but the plastic affect is there because it was rendered using "poor" shading techniques (top of the line ten years ago?). It's not hard to see that they were aiming for a realistic figure, which can be concluded from the high polygon count.
The characters in D3, on the other hand, have low size textures (but this doesn't really matter), along with a Warcraftish style and, well, polygon size (but this doesn't really matter again).
So we are down to the STYLE. It can't really be pointed out in the characters you picked. You have to go down to the environment to see striking similarities between D3 and WoW (or W3).
And Diablo III isn't dark and evil looking because it has a little more handpainted texture style and in ONE dungeon that is showed, it has a more green color to it?
Come on, you really think that other dungeons would have a different, more Diablo-like look?
Look at D2 caves, dungeons, whatever. You've seen one cave, you've seen them all. Same for dungeons and any other setting. There is one template for each.
It's hard not to imagine the D3 dungeon being not reused. And any other setting drastically differentiating from it.
Interface aside, it still doesn't look like Diablo III in terms of artstyle. Have you even played WoW?
No but I played W3 and the same argument can be made.
You guys toss up screens of dark places in diablo II like there are no yesterday, but you all obviously seem to forget the not-so-dark places of Diablo II also. Since it's become sport to criticise the art direction of a "colorful" diablo III, saying Diablo II was never this bright and vibrant with color, I have only one question:
Are you guys blind?
Since it seems fashion to throw around screenshots, here are some obvious ones I found:
I have only one thing to say: Take off your fckin sunglasses, you are obviously blind O,o...
Things can be bright and at the same time dark and evil looking, you showed it:
It's not only about brightness.
Less handdrawn style perhaps, but in no way as dark and gritty as you all claim. Sure Diablo II has some dark places, but it wasn't void of light places either. I still can't see the comparison to WoW or Warcraft 3 either, you claim this: http://www.morearnings.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/05/wow-horde-level-59-1.jpg
looks like Diablo III?
Ummm, no. The only thing that picture shows is a gargantuan interface.
Take a look at some meshes which obviously look closely to what we have already seen in D2 (such as the griffin picture).
