In addition to battling the hordes of the Burning Hells cooperatively with friends over Battle.net, players will be able to adventure through the world of Diablo III solo. More details on both the single-player and multiplayer experience will be revealed at a later date.
There: "Battle.net" or "Solo". Okay, so it's not like they're saying "There will be no lan" but they do say "multiplayer on battle.net" not "multiplayer on battle.net OR LAN". There's no mention of LAN play whatsoever actually, only improvements to battle.net, and trust me, I checked before posting. I'm worried because:
1 - Games are becoming increasingly internet dependant every year
2 - Axing LAN's not something you advertise but going against trends is, and
3 - Hellgate (eg: wannabe Diablo 3) did it
I've played through Diablo 2 with my two brothers over LAN to the point where to me LAN is an integral part of the Diablo experience. I couldn't play it on my own and I don't play games online - if I'm already paying for the game and the electricity why should I also have to pay for extra downloads? It's not like I'm playing with someone in Iceland! I abhor inefficiency.
A terrifying trend in games these days is compulsory internet connection, and I don't just mean MMORPGs, I'm talking about internet verification and games like Hellgate where you can't play over LAN and have to connect to the internet.
I'm relieved that Diablo 3 isn't an MMO but having scrawled all the information thus far public I am yet to figure out whether Diablo 3 will be playable over LAN. After all, the developers of Hellgate said they axed LAN play because people were reserve engineering the offline servers in Diablo 2 - I don't really understand this argument but I'm very afraid that Blizzard will go in the same direction.
It just wouldn't be the same if you had to log in ever time you wanted to play with a few mates at a LAN party or your brothers - seems like such a waste that you're connecting to a server halfway across the world just to communicate with a computer in the same room.
Blizzard: Please include LAN play!!!
