yes, you begin making something and by the time its released graphics have surpassed it. so you concertrate on other importtant area like character and story, aspects the diablo series does exceptionally well
Aspects that remain timeless, and that is defiantely a strength of games based on story rather than pretty graphics and action. They can take their time if that's what they start with, only when work on the actual engine starts do they need to hurry. Well, theoretically speaking.

Diablo has always seemed to have the superior graphics to the other games, so I'm hoping that that stays true
That will be hard. The business has developed considerably in later years, and there simply doesn't seem to be much time to do everything great in a game.
This is especially considering that we'er assuming D3 has been in development for a while just like SC2. And just like SC2, if that is the case then the graphics cannot be comparable to the best in the market. Too many years of development and you are bound to fall behind.

I think most people want graphics that resemble the same athmosphere in d1/2 then actually want the same engine/graphics.
(design and stuff from d1/2, you know)
Not all though it seems, which really surprises me.
Speaking of old graphics, how many here would have wagered that SC2 was keeping the old graphics if you hadn't seen the new sceenshots/movies? Not many I bet, so what makes D3 different?

Well keep the graphics. Diablo 1, 2 and Lod had pretty much the same graphics. That is what made the game so desirable to play. Change it and it wont be so desirable anymore.
But there was only a gap of three years in between 1 and 2. Graphics are also developing at an increasing rate as time passes.
Look at Starcraft. Graphics have been updated, but you can still clearly see the resemblence. Zealots, Command Centers, Zerglings etc. all look like in the past, just with agraphical update.

4 fixed isometric camera views. Changing camera views triggered by button.
Exacly. Since it's 3D, how will you tell which direction is the "right" one? Everything being able to rotate fully can work. It just may require you to push some extra buttons every once in a while.
Or alternatively, Blizzard could opt for a less tight design, spacing buildings and large structures/hills/whatever farther apart, thus reducing the need to change viewpoint.

A set 3D position won't help - objects block each other, something that doesn't really happen in 2D...
I only included the set 3D option to satisfy all the isometric fans out there. What I meant by set was that you press a button and the camera snaps into whatever preset position you have selected. Press the same button again, and the camera becomes fully moveable, allowing you to rotate around obscuring objects.

the way I see it there're some factors that make Diablo the game it is.
Two of them are the graphics and the gameplay.
The 2d world blends perfect with the clicking system, which (in my oppinion) must be left that way.
there're enough 3d games around and only a couple of (good) 2d ones. and I like a 2d rpg more than a 3d one (tho WoW and Morrowind are some good ones (sure, there are more, but I'm just stating the way I see things)).
I do not see that a problem of graphics, but a problem of pace. Diablo II goes fast, both characters and monsters flash across the sceen at in-humane levels of speed. But in all 3D games I see everything goes at a regular pace, and because of the extreme graphics it never comes up to the same speedsm, almost as if there's constant lag.
Keep the pace up where it should be, and combine that with a full customizable 3D view (and an option to lock it intothe same standard perspective) and we have a solution.

That's where opinions split. Some people like WoW's graphics, some don't, but I think most people agree that WoW's graphics don't fit the Diablo theme too well.

[quote name='maple_leafs182']im not saying the graphics wont be good, im saying they dont got to be good to sell. but i know they will be good./quote]
I do not think they have to be stunning to sell, but they cannot be outright bad. And D2 graphics are, by todays standards, outright bad.

d2 has such a huge fanbase that d3 could sell, even if it had d2 style graphics. I know that in reality d3 graphics will be way better then d2, they will probably be slightly better then titan quest, which are good graphics.
Of course it would sell, but that is not the question. The question is how well would it sell?
And that is why I believe in a strong upgrade in graphics, because we're talking about seven year old graphics here. It's not like D3 is a quick successor. If it is coming out, it had better be with a big bang.

All of you (and myself) can take old graphics if you have to, because you played games with those graphics when they were top-notch. Releasing a game today with D2 graphics won't generate new sales. New fans won't join, because it is hard to adapt to lower graphics in games you've never played before, and on top of that, many old D2 fans won't buy it either, because it won't be fresh enough.
D3 will with almost certainly have better graphics to generate better sales, not whether it stays true to it's predecessor or not.

I cant really put my finger on it, but after a while the "clean" and "beautifull" graphics of Oblivion dont atract me that much anymore.
I think it might be the repetitiveness. Even though you can custimize faces greatly, they all look rather similar. Dungeons all look alike, rooms all look alike, monsters are the same. But they had to cut down on something. It's still a long road ahead before we get the ultimate real-life simulator.

True. At least that's how I'm going to do it, even though I support full 3d. If they decide to do something I don't like at first glance, I'll still buy it.
