Guild Wars 2 will be releasing in about a month and a half. I am thinking of buying it, however, i dont want to waste 60 bucks if its gonna be a game i only play for like a month then stop (diablo 3 currently)
i havent been able to try out the beta. Has anyone been able to get into the beta weekends?
To be honest I never got into GW1, I played it quite a bit rerolled a few characters but something about it put me off. Maybe it was how empty the world felt because it was instanced. The fact you couldn't jump really annoyed me too for some reason.
I've played quite a bit of GW2 now and I'm liking what I see. Questing is different but not in a bad way I'd say it's still questing so of course it's going to be a little tedious, but the amount of customization you get in the game is pretty amazing. From skills to traits to weapon choice to armor dyes to simply being able to have a surname. I love it.
If you like PvP there's definitely fun to be had also. I don't really care for standard PvP but the World vs World vs World had me enthralled. I've spent many beta hours just firing cannons at people attacking our forts and castles.
To top that off I really love the GW system of pay once and no monthly fee, so I'll definitely be playing and I've already purchased.
I've been following the GW2 beta coverage for some time now. While I never payed GW1, I am intruiged greatly by this game. The huge attraction for me is the separation of PVP from the main game. you can roll a PVP character, that is max level and given a standard set of PVP gear. THIS IS HUGE. I can't beleive other MMO's don't do this.
All to often MMO's try to balance both pvp and pve, which is extremely hard to do. In GW2 they don't need to balance it beacuse pvp is totally sepearte from pve! Awesome idea. And i await the game launch with much anticipation.
I really like how they have the battleground/structured PvP which you use PvP gear in and are just the normal 5v5 type deals, and then they have World VS World VS World which is a huge battle where your stats are scaled up to everyone else and you can actually level by fighting. Your server being the best in WvWvW also provides some buffs for your server.
I gained I think 5 levels in one day on the beta mainly shooting people from the walls with mortars, cannons, arrow carts and even dropping boiling oil on them. Loot even drops from players like it would mobs. WvWvW has my heart.
If you were a fan of raiding in WoW there isnt anything equivalent of that really. The game does have dungeons to do with friends, huge world bosses, and even jumping puzzles that can take hours to do that have rewards in the end.
I was in the World vs World vs World battlegrounds last beta weekend and found one of the jumping puzzles and my god they're so intricate.
I forget how many dungeons the game is launching with but I know they have easier modes and then harder modes and they scale to level. So the first dungeon will still be at least some what challenging no matter what level you are.
The main selling point for me is the really fun PvP systems, and this is coming from a guy that doesn't really even care for PvP.
The quests are still something you'll be sort of used to but instead of accepting quests they sort of play out more naturally. At one farm you'll have the option to help the farmer feed cows, water corn, or kill worms. Once you and people in the area have done enough there the quest will complete and everyone that helped gets exp. Then sometimes a giant boss worm will burst out of the ground and everyone will have to fight it, or sometimes bandits will come to burn down the hay and some people will kill the bandits while others use water buckets to put out fires.
That's just in one tiny farm of the starting zone for humans.
I really enjoy the game and I feel I can easily get my 60$ worth and much more. The PvP is so addictive and the questing is not bad at all either, it's a refreshing change from the standard mmo. The combat system feels a lot more flexible when you can move and attack at the same time, I really like the skillsets each class has. You can have a warrior that uses rifles or bows and it still be really effective. Or a elementalist or ranger that use melee weapons to great effect.
The only down side is if you're expecting 10 and 25man raids you won't find that unless it's a world boss. The world VS world VS world PvP almost feels like a raid though you can even loot really nice items. There are dungeons that scale with levels so they're always fairly hard, there are dungeons that have jumping puzzles leading to nice treasure, the world is really nice looking, the water especially. The classes don't feel like there is much overlap at all. Crafting is even more fun than in most MMO's. When you craft things, the more you have queued up to craft the faster it will craft, it keeps speeding up so you don't have to wait long.
The last beta weekend is coming up and if I had any extra keys I'd share but I'm out. I'd definitely recommend it to buy though and that's just based on beta weekends. I've spent at least 40 hours probably between two of them.
I am going to spend this entire upcoming weekend playing the Beta. I'm hoping to get 2 or 3 characters up to around 25ish. I have no idea if this will be possible but the leveling system seems to make it seem like it is.
I may post a non Guild Wars fan review as I've never played the 1st but if the beta weekend can keep me playing till it goes down then I'll pre purchase it. I'm not going to fall for the "just wait till 80" like there was with SWTOR. If I don't feel the game is different or ground breaking like people say it is supposed to be, than I'm not buying it.
The game has really caught my eye in recent weeks and I'm really excited and hope it's everything it's supposed to be.
So for the 20-22 beta weekend do you need a beta key or can anyone play it? I think I managed to get one from the curse giveaway but can't find it again anywhere in my account. I copied it into notepad though. Also where do you download the beta client?
Well shit I just tried the beta code and it said its already in use. Guess I will have to pre purchase the game if i wanna try it in beta...which kinda defeats the whole point
Well shit I just tried the beta code and it said its already in use.
i also had this happen. i went to the link before the give away started and it told me to come back at a later time. i came back later and it said the give away had ended but there was a code there. i tried using the code and it told me it was already in use.
I'll be honest I'm not enjoying it. Way too RP for me. There's other little things too, but eh I don't feel like going back and forth. It's just not for me. Just a personal thing really.
I'm still enjoying it. There are personal stories which are more rpish but the regular quests are pretty fun and if you havent tried WvW pvp then you haven't seen half the fun.
I have been playing in the Beta this weekend. While it wasnt a lot of time to get going granted it was enough to get a early feel for the game.
I tried the Thief and the Hunter, both very different types of play and how to master them. the GFX in game are really nice. Also was nice to progress along a story more than grab Quests ehre there and everywhere.
The events are good you can just dive in them if they are startong / mid way or ending etc. Various things to discover and explore. The class you play I think iwll determine how much you will enjoy the game.
I am saying this because I didnt like the Thief and how it played but I loved the Hunter. After playing this weekeneds Beta I am seriosuly debating buying espeically since D3 is only game I play atm and thats losing appeal already.
Well your stats get scaled, but that's not accounting for stats on gear, the extra skillpoints and trait points higher levels will have. So there is definitely still a benefit to being a higher level player.
If you have ever played WoW, imagine going into a level 60 PvP match as level 10 with average gear. They will scale you to level 80 so you'll get all those stats you should have, but you won't get the gear stats, the talents, or even half of your skills.
Or if you enjoy sort of arena/battleground based PvP they have that also where you work more towards getting PvP gear.
In my personal opinion it's probably the best PvP in an MMO that I have seen yet. It's a lot of what other MMO's have promised but never made good with, its fun to jump right into but there are definitely still a lot of benefits to leveling up first.
World VS World will get you exp and loot, allowing you to level there if you really want, gathering items and crafting items can give you exp aswell, so you're not just forced to do all of the quests if you don't want to.
Exploration nets you exp, jumping puzzles, aside from the skills you gain through leveling there are skill challenges aswell which as far as I've seen are usually fighting a special NPC.
There is really plenty of areas to dive into and sort of choose how you want to level and at what speed, and how you want to make gold.
Well what exactly are you wanting to know more about? Controls? Mechanics? I think the biggest adjustment going from single player games to an MMO is usually controls, you can rekeybind everything I've seen so far.
WASD is walk, actually movement if you've ever played a shooter is very similar, but then you'll have 1-10 as hotkeys, now they can be rebound to be a lot closer to WASD since you will be using those anyways, or if you're lucky enough to have a mouse with the extra buttons and keys its helpful also. Plenty of people adjust to playing without anything fancy like that though, it just makes things a little easier.
As far as mechanics go, each RPG has different ones just like each MMO will have different ones. Is there anything else you're specifically curious about?

The wiki is really up to date and accurate. It's an official wiki: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Main_Page

There's no way it could be in use. x_x Unless maybe you already registered on Guild Wars 2 with it.

Keep in mind though two of those items are one time use, ones a skill, ones a 5 day ability, and ones a pet.
So that's sort of debatable if it's "worth it". I'd definitely recommend picking up the game though.

If you played DAoC back in the day and loved it, buy GW2. If you didn't play DAoC but love MMORPGs with awesome PvP combat, buy GW2.
If you really like to customize your character at end game with systems similar to WoW's transmogrify and a vast set of dyes, buy GW2.
