It can't be an NPC. If Charsi for instance decided to join the "fight" what class would she be? Blacksmith? Nah... Rogue? OK. Boom, it's a returning class.
A "concept" class based on what we've seen?
Let's see what's left:
Witch
Healer
Innkeeper
Maid
Blacksmith
Rogue=Thief
Merchant
Sage
Caravaner
Drunk
Guard
Shaman
Prince
Alchemist
Wizard
Shipmaster
Mercenary
Sorceror=Mage=Vizjerei
Assassin
Horadrim
Angel
Amazon
Warrior
Archer=Bowyer (different from Rogue)
Priest
Archbishop
Necromancer
Druid
Townsperson
Master at Arms
Warlock
Paladin=Cleric
Bard
Cow
^Rough sketch. I'm not going to make flicks of their names since it will be the same thing. Also classes like "Iron Wolf" don't mean anything. Classes revealed so far are very different and most importanty it is VERY obvious to someone who understands english what their "template" is just by hearing their names. Something too neutral like Soldier, Mercenary etc. or too specific like Archer and Angel will not be included either. Class names should be unisex as well considering both genders will be playable.
From all these let's see which ones make sense to conceptually use either a bow/crossbow or that aren't too alike the existing playable characters:
Rogue
Assassin
Bard
Hey, look ! They're all previous classes !
Maybe we should add shapeshifting archer. That might work, right?
And all these default char designs are very similar. Fusion is very likely. Well either that or we are not going to use ranged weapons.
\/
\/
Which come to think of, might actually work. Seriously. Any info on dropped bows on the demo anyone?
Wow. I would love a drunk class... Some kind of Hancock-esque, misunderstood all-powerful misfit. Rep point for you!
Well if there is indeed only one class remaining (and not two, which is a theory of mine, they have too much time now not to make two more classes, considering the game probably won't be coming out until late 2011), then it'll probably be a Hunter/Ranger to account for ranged weapons, shape-shifting, and whatnot.
I also think in the first expansion, they'll have the antithesis of a Paladin, perhaps a Blackguard. It would basically be a Paladin/Necro. I could see them building a story about how the Paladin from D2 went crazy and became corrupted by darkness. He would make a cameo in D3, still not fully consumed by darkness, but in the expansion he would come to the heroes, consumed entirely, and desperate to break free and become a holy Paladin once again.
Actually... what if we could make skills for the last class gender specific? A male "rogue" would deal with swords and a female "rogue" would use bows...
What? Why?
If you're going with the very sketchy 'males are stronger than females' angle, then they'd also make better archers. Not to mention that females have those troublesome obstacles on their chests--they'd be better with blades than bows for that reason.
There are too many problems down the road of sexually dimorphic game mechanics. Better to keep gender an aesthetic difference only.
Also: nice to meet you, Kyle. I'm Kyle.

‘I'M NOT LEAVING UNTIL WE ALL HAVE AIDS!’—The importance of calling them ‘mercenaries.’
I hear you on the barbarian. I'm all about finesse and dignity in warriors. To Hell with 'Hulk smash!'
And I know that testosterone enables men to build muscle more easily, but I don't know what medical evidence there is on women being 'more agile' (or how agility helps with archery, for that matter, as it's just arm strength and eyesight). They have more flexible legs, yes, thanks to the wider pelvis. But the rest of their musculature and their reflexes are the same as a similarly built male. Unless you cite Robert A. Heinlein as your source.
Of course, it's common today--and has been throughout much of European history--that men are fatter than women, and that certainly makes women more agile on average, but that's a culturally reinforced difference, not a genetic one. Genes actually dictate that we burn fat more easily, but there's little social pressure on us to do so compared to women.
Anyway, what a derailing! Sorry.

Alchemist: Maybe I just read too much Terry Brooks as a kid, but this seems very viable. The playstyle would, of course, be very much like the assassin.
Priest: We've only ever had one 'holy' character, in the form of the paladin, though we encountered the corrupted forms of his robed fellows, the Priests of Zakarum. It would be nice to lay down the Holy Law once again, in a more direct form.
Bard: The Diablo series' first finesse melee fighter, I thought the bard was quite a compelling class that was a shame to leave out of Hellfire. Looking at this thread, it's the sort of thing that people seem to want, anyway.

Hey, look ! They're all previous classes !
The Bard would be even less of a 'previous class' than the Monk, since it was never even officially added to Hellfire and could only be activated by editing the command.txt file.

I also don't really see why they couldn't take an existing NPC and put a spin on him to make the character a lot more diverse. Imagination anyone?
In my opinion we almost definately will see a ranged class. Amazon seems unlikely because of gender, as does the rouge. I'm betting they're gonna take an interesting NPC from the previous games to the drawing board and see if they can't build something into an original character.

I never cared much for the druid. I wish this new character would be called a "Hunter", being shield/sword character in one tree and a bow character in another tree. I dislike javelins, and think bows have always been way cooler. I suppose adding a 3rd tree for elemental druid type shit would be cool.
The last class is quite obviously going to be a bandit. They're going to bring Elzix from act 2 back into the game. Remember how he spoke about a bandit lord and what not? Yeah, that's what it's going to be.
Stop saying female monks are impossible. The Monk in Diablo 3 is Asian-themed, specifically, Chinese-themed (think Buddhism, Shaolin, etc.). There are female monks in Buddhism.

Yeah, I live in China and I can confirm that there are women monks, so that's the end of this discussion. But nevertheless, this isn't based on real life but on Sactuary. So it's pointless.
Thus keeping this in mind, Sanctuary lore would have us believe that certain Rogue Groups are only comprised of women....Not really certain about that. And that amazon warriors are all female due to their apparent lack of estrogen. (Exept in the chest area)
This only leaves us with few possibilities indeed....
As previously mentioned, it will be an old character, perhaps NPC, as hinted by a few players. (No Paladin88, it doesn't matter what you might think you know, it can very well be an NPC or NPC inspired class)
So for ranged it could be the following.:
-Rogue (Different Faction, not the sisters.)
-Amazon (Men taking arms due to massive assault on their lands)
-Iron Wolves (I think that's what the act 3 mercs were called)
-Act 2 Mercs, but a ranged regiment. (Hopefully with Auras or Passives and a cool new name)
-Act 4 (Angelic Gate warrior, the one who sold weapons with a cool char name)
-Act 5 (Ranged Barbarian warriors, as was mentioned by Sabvre and his Mongols)
Or just a new character being a hybrid of previous 2 ranged classes, with a different name. Ranger, Archer, both being very unisex and straightfoward.

Oh, I agree- the "act II merc" name sounds lame.
Only reason why they'd be brought back are the polearm weapons which combined with the ranged abilities could fit very well in the missing spot. It can even combine the assassin/rogue/bard philosophies. But having noone to say whether any spears, tridents etc. were dropped in the demos or if the barbarian class can utilize such weapons effectively with the parts of the skill-tree that we know, a discussion cannot exist.

And it's not just because we saw the act 2 merc using polearms that every warrior from that region fights as such. I would think that Blizzard would be a little more complex than just basic "Bad guy, Good guy". Their stories are filled with betrayal and long, complex, and understand-only-at-the-end plans. Especially Diablo. Whatever they have in store, I just know it's gonna blow my mind when I figure it all out. That's what I love about Blizzard...
