Wizard can also wield swords, just look at their conjuration spell tree. They are actually allowing a melee/battle mage build. Melee damage will increase spell damage (i'm going this build if its still there at release).
Also... look at the picture that everyone is assuming is the female monk. Thats definately the wizard wielding an empowered sword.
The barb is brute strength, but should he be the only one with sword skills when he could just as easily use hammers and maces?
Your right, but there are limitations. Barbs don't use bows so he wouldn't be that "mixed class". Also he is the only class that needs a sword out there right now, with the monk as mabey an exeption. I'd like to see a hybrid class as well, but it;s hard to make a class that doesn't have a dominant fighting type (melee/ranged) like you said.
Edit:Sabvre - If you are a meleeing Wizard, you might have an issue.

Barbarian: All (except MAYBE staff)
Witch Doctor: Dagger, Staff maybe 1H Axe (think about a voodoo caster carrying a bloody hatchet).
Wizard: Staff, Dagger, Sword
Monk: Staff, Hand Weapons
