The Knight: slayer of dragons, rescuer of damsels, the iconoclastic hero in classic fantasy. I'm sad because it doesn't look like there's any chance of this guy, my favorite role, making it in.
In D1 we had the Warrior, in D2 we had the Paladin...both were essentially Knight's. I thought we might "literally" see a Knight in D3.
Now you may argue that people can just play a barbarian and pretend like it's a Knight, but it's really not...a barbarian is a big strong BRUTE that focuses on tons of health and two-handed attacks, whereas the Knight is more focused on defense and damage avoidance, and has a very different character...with more class.
The monk has been described as a replacement to the Paladin but he really bears no resemblance...he looks just like an Assassin with a different name. Think about it, he uses claws and martial arts strikes, focuses on quickness and low defense. Doesn't even seem to have the healing abilities that are usually associated with a monk. Seems exactly like the D2 assassin to me, without the annoying traps.
Yeah, I'm upset about this too. it looks like the next class will be an archer type class, and that we won't see a knight. But, I'm tired of robes and rags, I like a guy in Armor.
Sure, the Barbarian wears armor, but it's just not the same. Diablo games have never been lacking a class that wore more western styled medieval armor, so i have to hope for a Knight class too, as unlikely as it now seems.

The Paladin ended up ruining Diablo 2. Besides, it's such an overused archetype.
Good riddance.

It's 3am. rain. thunder, lightning. silence. silence. thunder. wind, howling wind. pricks of sound the rain makes. slowly. as it trickles down your roof. behold the solemn nature. behold the beauty of the storm.
The monk is definitely a cross between the assassin and the paladin I think. Clearly has assassin type of attacks, but we have only seen 4 or 5 abilities. I think he is going to have a few paladin type auras as well. Also, some possible self heal or health regen ability. As for the Knight type of class, I would guess it is going to show up in the expansion in some form.
Right now Blizz wants to make each class unique, and to me the Knight class(or paladin from D2) is too much of a best of both worlds type of class. It has a little bit of everything which makes it less unique and more boring to play, atleast for me anyway.

Okay, I'm getting kind of blue in the face by saying this, but there will be no archer // ranged class.
Secondly, look at facts.
Of the classes we know so far, we have:
Barbarian -
Lacking in speed, the Barbarian uses brute strength and natural toughness
Witch Doctor -
The Witch Doctor uses abilities that are designed to manipulate the enemy, and use his pets to win
Wizard -
The Wizard is pure caster, being able to decimate foes by harnessing the arcane
Monk -
The monk sacrifices toughness for speed and is a powerhouse
What do all four currently have in common? They are all excellent at both close range and long range. Why fill the fifth slot that excels only at long range? Think about it.
Now, from what we've seen, there is one class who is a traditional "Plate" armor wearer, and that's the Barbarian. We have three light armor wearers, and one heavy armored. From this we can infer that the next class will be at least more armored than the lighties.
I recommend not giving up hope on another heavily armored character, but DO give up hope on the Ranger // Rogue // Amazon. That's not logically possible.
[Edit: Also, The Monk uses "Holy-esque" abilities. What hasn't been covered as far as attack archetypes? We have Pure Melee, Disease and Fire, Arcane + Lightning + Fire, and now Holy. What's missing?]

so the bows that drop are just for vendoring then eh?
Huh, you are correct in that it is a short bow. *Shrug* Then I'll rescind my previous statement about there being "no" chance of a pure ranged class.
I, however, will stand by the idea that I highly doubt there will be... but I will reserve judgement.
[Edit: This is the first gameplay trailer of the game though. Things have changed since then. I don't think anyone's seen a bo-staff or claws in any of the gameplay trailers predating the release of the newer classes. I still carry hesitation on the aspect of the pure ranged class. It just doesn't fit the game.]
