The ranger should have a designated pet that you choose during the game (only one), and one of your skill trees is just skill for your pet. If you choose let's say wolf then one of the skills could be wolf pack, which summons other wolves from the wilderness. (just a thought)
One for bows because as we all know it's mainly what rangers use. (basically the same as an amazon from D2)
The third skill tree would be for things such as traps
- bear trap
then also a version of duel wield that permits him/her carry one short sword and one dagger. Also a lot of moves involving different types of poison damage.

Think of the pet as a more in-depth version of the hunter's pet in WoW.
This is good, except rangers arent hunters so id have to say no to the pet idea. Id liek to see the ranger in diablo3 as a cross between the amazon and the assasin- by this i mean bows, javs,traps, and close combat weapon's such as dual weilding 1 handed light swords or knives

Yeah I like this idea - amazon mixed with assassin would be great. But, a ranger should have a pet of some kind (summon able?), definitely not a constant pet.

Since they removed the limitation that you must invest skills in one tree to use some high tier skill in this same tree, i believe a tree entirely based at one kind of weapon will not exist.
They removed this limitation execly to allow hybridization among the trees (for exemple, i can invest all my points in Juggernaut and still have a whirlwind if I have the level and the specific skill pre requisite). A tree based at one weapon are very hard to mix with a tree that requires another weapon... If a class can use both melee and ranged weapon i believe the skills will be spread all over the trees.
