I know that everyone out there has talked about this but I thought I would just give my two cents on ideas I haven't heard about yet.
One idea I have playing around in my head is a lost soul I guess. Essintially a character who is an anti hero. I have heard of alot of people talking about vampires and such and simply one of the reasons why vampires are attractive is becuase of the whole evil personna.
I think you could go a long way with this. Think of it like a ghost or evil demon that turns good.
As far a skills go I think that most of his skills could start off as weak (evil) necromancy type magic and as he progresses he learns good magic lets say the same as a cleric.
I also like the idea of an elimental magic user. the key here is as they progress they end up being able to work with all elements. this is where it could be neat. His skills could be ones of multi elemental abilities. Think of casting water then air freezing the water and holding everyone in place.
Another couple of interesting ones could be drifter, stalker, thief, native, shapeshifter
A Thief type might be nice, but I don't feel like it'd really work playing the game as a ghost or a demon, even if they do turn good. The average Sanctuary human isn't going to look at a ghost and say "Hey! There are some demons over there. I'll like you if you kill them," like they would to a Barbarian or a Wizard. They're going to shit their pants and run away.
You've got to think of characters that are humans but specialists. Supernatural beings as playable characters seem like they'd stretch the boundaries of NPC interaction a bit too far. You've got to remember that your character is not only subject to his themes but also the limitations of his environment, including the storyline and the key figures within it. Ghosts and Vampires and Demons and Ghouls can't achieve the same responses as Humans can and, therefore, won't fit into the storyline very easily.
That said, let's look at what we've got as far as the "archetypal" characters go. We've got our 2-hander guy, our caster, and our summoner. We've still got to have a ranged weapons user and a shield user. Try to figure it out from there.

anyways cheers
As already said by many, the idea of playing a non-humam will not be very cool in terms of lore and NPC interaction. The only possible way to implement something like this is a demon in human form that are betraying the burning ehlls for some reason.
And i didin't like your elemental caster. They created a more universal spellcaster execly to avoid this kind of pure elementalist caster (read soc). Also a big part of elemental spells were already used by the wizard, and it would sux to see 2 character using spells of the kind.
And i disagree 100% with the barb been a shield user. He just have ONE shield bonus in a passive skill in one tree. No shield related skills, no sign of unic shield for him... Actually i said that he's a shield user just like D2's barb pre 1.10, were the best PVE build were the concentration barb that used one handed weapons + shields.
And we must have a holy class. I don't believe in a D3 without holy bolt.
Always keep in mind that the next two classes have to be so distinctive that a single word that describes it (or maybe two words?) has to be enough to make you immediately get the picture of what kind of a class it is.
A not-so-overused holy class could be: Priest which could be an awesome Diablo class but the reception may not be so good because of the people with WoW-phobia; Pope, which sounds kinda religious but can be made into a great class if done properly; Hierophant, which may not be so good because not many people know what it is; Crusader, which is popular in some but can be questionable when put in the context of the game.
A not so boring ranged class could be: Ranger which sounds kinda proprietary; Rogue, which is great as it is a D1 class and Rogues also play a huge role in D2 lore, especially in Act 1. Can't think of anything else, sadly.
The barbarian, depending on the character build, can be an armored shield user actually.
He just lacks the "holy" aspect in comparison to our previous shield user.
The Barb can use a shield, but he isn't a shield-based class like the Paladin was. Heck, even the Paladin's special items in LOD were shields. Also, the Barbarian is more ritualistic in nature while Knights would be more servants of others (kings, holy powers, et cetera).

I would like a hero who is a non-human, but he/she should be demon or angel, because I don't think vampires and warewolves are the way to go for D3.
Shisou, shapeshifting is something different, the Druid is a human after all.
And i suppose everyones right about the barb not being a true shield user.
But perhaps he will get more shield skills eh? Its possible, as the skills are far from being complete.
Yeah it's possible but ''improblable''. But what can happen is the game have no 'shield' class, so the most close to be one is the barb.

I like what you're thinking sir...
A Thief type class sounds unique and not done before in Diablo-verse...
Some kind of stealth, scouting behind enemy lines and backstabbing for double damage sounds nice...
And there's bound to be a healer of sorts... Hopefully, a Cleric/Priest archetype focusing more on buffing/debuffing skills than combat ones...
I went into detail on a class that combines the aspects of rogue, ranger, and assassin in another thread. I am calling it Night Hunter for the moment. Good with bows and daggers(H2H, thrown, and punch type). Also can set, detect, and disarm traps. Supplements weapons and traps with poisons and explosives. Can use stealth to sneak by big dumb enemies to directly attack the annoying support types(magic/summoning/buffing/resurrecting) after setting traps to cut off their defenders from rendering immediate aid.
Another thought just came to mind. Why does a shield type have to be a paladin? Why not a Death Knight as a sort of paladin/necromancer. Summon skeleton warriors and bone golems to fight by your side, that spread deadly disease when destroyed! Meanwhile your shield is busting demons in the face and running them through with a swordblade as black as obsidian that drinks in the blood of enemies to fuel your dark power. Oops, guess that would make the "Witch Doctor" kind of pointless. I don't really like that character anyways. So out of place for Diablo. Doesn't sound heroic. Kind of a lame reimagining of the necromancer. The game is a ways off from being finished, so who knows... I will continue to hope that a Death Knight style character replaces the Witch Doctor.
And for the fifth and final class you would finally get to play as.... DECKARD CAIN! Identify items with wild abandon!
I would personally like a character that is a warrior but is holy at the same time, maybe one that wears a hood and runs around killing demons, like this:
(Sorry for near nudeness, it was the best picture I could find)
In D2 LOD 2 new classes came. Maybe in D3 expansion 2 classes can come, Fallen Angel Type and Demon type. Demon guy can be like sum guy/girl with a black hood over their head and a black robe. Inside the hood would be blackness, where his/her head is suppose to be. Like Tyrael. You can't see his face, only blackness. The Fallen angel would be the same as the demon person except with a little red and sum yellow. No wings, or else you would look to much like Tyrael in d2 act 4.:)
i'm expecting an demigod/half angel or half-demon character.. half demon would obviously be a sorta anti-hero
From my understanding of the lore all humans already are descendants of half demon-angels... Given that, I don't know how they could work a half-X character in.
I agree that either a Paragon or Dervish (as seen in Guild Wars) could be plausible.
The Paragon could be considered some sort of Angelic class. Lots of Light based magic (Auras, Buffs, Healing, Anti-Undead/Demon), Heavy Armor, Shield, Medium Ranged Weapons (Javelin or Spear).
The Dervish; Scythe Wielding, Fast, Auras, Avatars (Shapeshifting).

btw there is a different section where this is supposed to go :\

Non-human 'classes' are out of the question.

So you can get all them healing/paladin abilities. but maybe also something demonic.... (demons are fallen angels if u know your stuff)
They could be called "Fallen".
Do you think they've already decided the other characters? or still thinking?

I dont think they could, arent fallen those short red/blue/orange/black dudes?
(this reminds me were there any fallen-like creatures seen in D3 yet?)
My LOD CD exploded the day before the nocd patch, and took my DVD drive with it....
(Sorry for near nudeness, it was the best picture I could find)
lol for some reason from the previous posts it gave me the picture of vergil being in D3 from devil may cry XDXDXDXDXD
i think a pure angel wouldnt be bad
i mean if your hero can beat baal but tyrial couldnt they cant be that over powered and strong xD
would cover that holy class everyone wants lol
or maybe a halfdemon/ half angel class which would be pretty random but not impossible lol
Be my Buddy =^.^=
