Both diablo games have included a "stealth" type of character, the rogue in Diablo, and the Assassin in D2. But I never really thought the rogue was.. rogue-y enough, and the assassin was never assassin-y enough. I always felt like they were missing something.
I was wondering, how do you think they will approach the stealth class in D3 ? What do you think they should include ? Should they use the previously established rogue or assassin, or go for something completely new ?
Personally, I'm all for the assassin. She was a great addition to the game, she provided a mix of damage, and versatility. I always remember my martial arts assassin as being one of my most fun to play characters ^_^.
Many people have been asking how these 2 characters are stealth based, and in truth, they aren't. Blizzard intended them to be stealthy, but failed. They are the closest thing to stealth characters that the Diablo games have. Stealth in diablo basically involved agility based characters, and characters that had to be more careful than the other classes in combat.
And also, yes, the rogue is more similar to the amazon than to the assassin, but as I said, the rogue filled the "stealth" role in diablo.

I agree Zhar; the sin is a lot of fun to play since you can almost do like combos with her charge up attacks. I think she was a great, although somewhat underappreciated, class addition to the series. I truly hope they return with a class that has her play "style" though I doubt that it will be an exact duplicate.
Please forgive my ignorance, but what is your definition of a Stealth Class?
Follow-up question: How is the Assassin a Stealth Class?
Well, stealth in diablo never really involved much actual sneaking, which is why stealth is in quotation marks.
By "stealth" I basically mean characters that don't just rush into combat, or that stand back and cast spells. "Stealth" in diablo usually involved hit and run, and approaching monsters with care. Not to say the other characters never had to do this, but the rogue and Assassin generally had to adopt a different style of play.
Guess I should have been more specific, sorry about the confusion
As for how the Assassin was a stealth class, it was the closest thing to a stealth class that D2 had, the same with the rogue in the first Diablo.

The assassin gameplay is not that diffirent from a barb or a non-hammer pally. They both need to approuch with caution because in high difficult, unless you have a godly gear and a high level, you can't just rush on.
Barbarians using WW in high hell is a exemple. He could dishout a ridiculous damage, but one hit in ww and you are dead in most cases.
Imo the assassin is a failed attempt of stealth class. Some of her skills (expecially Cloak of Shadows) are design to this kind of gameplay, however CoS never became that usefull. Also her never needed this kind of stuff to survive...
I really want a stealth in D3. C'mon we need something truely new, that we never played in diablo before. Of course it don't need to be a metal gear, were you wait your enemies t egt in a good position and sneak out... Just a skill that makes you vanish for a few seconds and some skills that must be used while vanished is good enough for me.
A dark ranger class would be cool. By that I mean an agility class using bows and slicing weapons with poison skills and other dark kind of magic and bleeding/ripping effects
There is already a "dark magic" warrior... The WD!
As some other poster's have stated if there really does not exist a "stealth" class in Diablo II why call any class a stealth class? Mele Glass Cannon perhaps?
While I did not play the Assassin as extensively as I did other classes I will say that I never found her (or any other class) to be stealth. I know you put the word in quotes, but from my first glance I thought "well I must have been playing the class wrong all those years ago".
If the word can barley be used to describe something loosely why use it at all?

As i said before, Cloak of Shadows makes you unseen to your enemies, thats why the assassin is theorically a stealth class (or at least have a stealth build). However cloak of shadows were never good enough to draw attention nor it was that necessary for any build.
There is no "stealth class" in any Diablo game to date.
wow in d1 we didn't had a summoner or a suport class... but woot !
In d2 we have a necro that can kill stuff just by summoning and cursing without using any direct attack and a paladin with 20 different party suportive auras (remenber that he gest only 30 skills, so its 2/3 of his skills).
So this argument of ''no stealth class'' just because we didn't get one before it's ridiculous and close-minded.
i'm thinking like a sorta hunter/ trapper idea. he would use bows and knives, but would also have the agility to use fighting techniques (martial arts). he would also have control of some nature power (think diablo 2 druid).
basically a amazon/assassin/druid.
he would be kinda fragile, so you couldnt just smash your way thru hordes of monsters like a barbarian. you would need to be smart about it.
Yeah I know they have those roles, but it's also true that the Barbarian is the opposite of the Sorceress in a way and the Necromancer the opposite of the Paladin. I mean, in what they stand for.
Then the Assassin is also the opposite of both the Barb and the Sorceress, because she uses physical and mental tricks to "fake" magic so to speak. And the Druid is, in his convictions, another side to the argument with the Necromancer and Paladin. So.. only the Amazon has no opposite sorta
I can't see why Sin are oposite to the soc and the barb and drui oposite of the necro and pally. As I've understand the oposite thing is:
Soc (pure magical character) vs. Barb (no magical character)
Necro (summon undeads, use poison, debuffer) vs. pally (strong vs. undeads, cures poison, buffer)
Imo Zon could be oposite to the barb. Pure ranged class vs. Pure melee class. But zons have a close combat spear sidetree and barbarian a throwing weapon side build.
As the druid is by far the biggest hybrid in diablo (druids have melee combat, magical attacks, summon and suport auras) i guess he can't be oposite to anything. The assassin in my view is a mixture of barbarian (strong melee attack power) and soc (strong elemental damage - for me traps were allways a type of hydra lol). So shes not the oposite of soc and barb, but a point of balance betwen those 2 classes.
And i really can't see why were talking about this in a stealth class topic
Yeah, we got pretty off topic, but still, it was an interesting discussion
I actually thought Zons and Barbs were quite similar, both had melee strengths, and range strengths, and both were great support classes.
The druid was the biggest hybrid of the bunch tho... he had a bit of everything.

Battlemage is a hybrid class between sorceress and fighter, Blizzard rarely incorporates such, it prefers archetypes. I guess the closest to battlemage we will have is Druid.
A ranger is probably guaranteed. Something like a druid + amazon + rogue mix... they may totally mix up traps, shapeshifting, nature magic, long range (bows alone is a bit limited IMO), high-speed melee, and combat buffs (see amazon). + trap detection for a bit of DI nostalgia.

There must be a holy one

Could specialize in throwing weapons and using a 1 handed weapon, without a shield.
Second, a Battlemage would rock. Spell caster but with the ability to wield a sword and mail armor, take a few hits too.
