The Nephalem are the humans. The World Stone was both a cloaking enchantment to divert demons and angels from Sanctuary, but also a check on the nephalem, ritualistically reducing their powers with every generation.
i would hope it wasn't an obvious and common fact (considering uldyssian himself didn't know until someone from another plane told him) but if the players and nephalem then what are they exactly? Are they a different species from another planet?

Supermen would be an appropriate term.

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.
Every human in Diablo are the descendants of the Nephalems the latter being the first few generations of humans created by the union of angels and demons. Every human has the power of the Nephalem but they need help for it to first manifest within themselves.
If you look at some classes from D2 like the Barbarian and the Necromancer, they have at least one ancestor who was one of the firstborn like Bul Kathos and Rathma, so the Nephalems aren't a class in itself.
great answer veltras, it's all pretty clear now. I just didn't think they lost the title of nephalem as generation went on. I do miss Bul-Kathos, though. Is he mentioned in anything after the sin war? I'm only six books into the canon lore
It's kind of like if you believe the bible story of Adam and Eve, if you want to get technical we all descended from them, but I never consider them as my great great great great great (etc etc) grandparents.
The humans of Sanctuary have bred so much that most of the people have VERY little of the Nephalem left in them.
Not that I'm aware of, there are a few references to him in the Barbarian section in the D2 manual and some items in the game bear his name, but if anything there's more info on Bul-Kathos in the Sin War trilogy than anywhere else.
Also we don't know what happen to them and they are immortal, so there's a chance we'll meet with them in D3

At least that's how I see it.
That's not how it works, the people still have the power of the Nephalem but they are just not aware of it and they can't learn how to use it without exterior help because of the effects the Worldstone had on them.
As a side note, Rathma does mention that the power mutates with the generations and that Uldyssian possesses power that he doesn't have and vice versa.
Not really, the Garden of Eden existed before Africa had a name.:P Besides they don't know if it was quite in Africa or the Middle East.
Anyway you get the point.
I was just saying it in the context of the majority. It all depends on what you believe. If you believe in whatever, then whatever were the first people and we are all whatevers. You get the point. lol..

the barbarians honored Bul'Cathos as the necromancers honored Rathma. They didnt really descend from him. But fact remains that humanity was a result of the union of angels and demons and as mentioned before, their strength diminishes with each generation. It could be awakened, but it has no certain form. Its different on each nephalem (according to the Sin War trilogy) so it would be hard to have one class.
It would only work if we had one base character that chose talent lines as in Titan Quest but i dont like that idea for Diablo 3.
I see all of the Major PCs (the warrior, rogue, and sorcerer of Diablo, and the barbarian, amazon, sorceress, paladin, necromancer, (and, ultimately, druid, and assassin) of Diablo II) as being of the Nephalem. These were the "heroes" of the games, and as such, possessed abilities as were not yet realized in their contemporaries.
Those contemporaries, being the NPCs of both games... they had not yet realized their full potential, as such. But the hints were there... Cain, being of the Horadrim, can already be considered one of the Nephalem; expressing his wisdom, and with his ability to Identify, and Pepin's, Akara's, Fara's, Ormus's, Jamella's, and Malah's ability to Heal; Griswold's, Charsi's, Hratli's, Halbu's, and Larzuk's abilities to mend damage from a variety of causes...
The Nephalem, in various stages, are coming into their own, against the angels and demons... the "Heroes" being the "front line."
Nephalem are just really powerful humans. How I always saw it was that when you got to higher and higher levels you were simply unlocking the remnants of Nephalem blood in you.

The Ancients wouldn't say: "We are the nephalem..." if it was an obvious and common fact.
