Why, at the beginning of the game, does Leah refuse to believe the Prophecy of the End Days? Why does she refer to everything Cain says as "just stories"?
She thought that the Skeleton King was a fucking folktale. Are you serious? Cain was in Tristram during the worst of it and bore witness to a great many unspeakable atrocities. He watched the people he grew up with die horrible deaths. He himself was the last man alive in Tristram, held prisoner by demons! He followed the heroes of Diablo II in their attempt to vanquish the Lords of the Burning Hells once and for all. He stood in the Pandemonium Fortress for fucks sake. He met Tyrael himself! An Archangel! Leah herself has visions of the Eternal Conflict, as we saw in the introduction cinematic of Diablo III. Leah travelled much of Sanctuary with Cain as she was growing up, and bore witness to a lot of strange shit, including skeletons. It's possible that skeletons are typical in Sanctuary but I just can't believe that Cain didn't explain anything about what he has been through and what he has seen.
He's an old man prone to rambling. She probably thought he was off his rocker. If someone told you that demons were roaming the earth 100 years ago (I know it's 20 in the story, but to get to a point where there were no tvs or anything...), they met an archangel, stood in a fortress in hell, and watched someone save the world, would you believe them?
Here's what the creators of the game said on the matter in the Behind the Scenes DVD (paraphrased a bit):
"Since she was a little girl, Cain's been roaming around this map looking for pieces of this prophecy of the End Days. All that while, he's teaching Leah to be his apprentice. He would have been constantly talking to her about this prophecy, you know, 'At the End of Days, Angels and Demons will fight on the land of Man' but she has never seen angels or demons so she doesn't believe it, but at the same time she closes her eyes and sees these nightmares and doesn't know if they are real or just her uncle's stories blending together."
"Leah eventually has to come to terms that everything he had been telling her was real, and she finally realizes that and starts fulfilling this and becomes this new Cain for us. Tyrael, as a mortal now, begins to rely on Leah as that Deckard Cain role. Together, they help pretty much uncover Diablo's maneuverings and what he's been planning under the surface of all of this all along."
So, yeah, she was basically the Sanctuary equivalent of an internet user screaming PROOF!!!!!!! or not believing that anyone, ever, could be related to or personally know someone 'famous.'
The worst part is at one point she specifically talks about dragging Uncle away from a horde of skeletons or something years? before the Metyrael falls, but those must have just been stories too.

That piece of dialogue is what motivated me to start this thread.
I love Leah to death, she is a great character, but I still don't understand her initial skepticism.
really, if you think leah was bad i thought the part that the barb played was fucking horrible! If this is suppost to be the SAME barb we played in D2 then why the hell doesn't he remember beating diablo's face in once already. Our barb should be walking around with more confidence and cockyness then the fucking wizard has.
She was a perfect chance for my Wiz to get laid...but first she doesn't believe in her uncle, then she goes into the sewers (can't do it with the smell :/), then my Wiz has to fight hordes of monsters (but he keeps in mind that he will do her after the war)...and when the war is over, her mad geneticist mother decides to mojo mojo her and turn her into Diablo :/ No problem with Diablo, my Wiz loved that form and had the weirdest boner watching those boobs and feminine forms...but you know, it's Diablo he only wanted to fuck the angels and I had to put her down because I couldn't bear the sight of my love with that Imperius Imp! R.I.P Leablo

I don't think that the male barb is the barb we played as in D2.
I'm pretty sure that this was explicitly stated by Blizzard prior to the release of Diablo III.
Leah is absolutly the worst character Blizzard has ever created.
She is 19 or 20 years old and still acts like she is 12, she witnessed a meteor fall from the sky and basically target Deckard Cain, which then caused all the dead bodies to start uprooting and killing inocent villagers, and yet she still thiks they are stories, DC dies and she doesn't even bat an eye instead walks outside and just stands there waiting to tell you we need to move on, in Act 2 she finally finds her mother after 20 years and the two instantly buddy buddy, not even a question as to why she abandoned her all those years, which to this day still makes no god damn sense why she did it, Did she just not want to get close to her in fear she won't want to turn her into Diablo? moving on, Act 3 she loses control and kills an entire room full of guards and says simple "The demons are at rest now, I think" They just killed about 30 people...no shit..
I'm really hoping that Belial is still alive and that he has minupulated everything from the start and thats why Diablo seems so weak because he truely was NOT the prime evil.
Gonna be honest, I thought it was pretty clear. She doesn't believe in the PROPHECY OF END TIMES. She doesn't believe that there are ANGELS AND DEMONS fighting a proxy war in Sanctuary.
That has nothing to do with monsters. Obviously she believes zombies and skeletons exist, but given the random fauna and flaura that exist in Sanctuary, nothing about the various monsters that she would have seen would screen demonic influence, or some prophecy about the end of times. Remeber all of Albdul's books? He's found lots and lots of monsters, some of which he assumes have some dark influence behind them, but he never attributes that to demons, but to evil super powered men. Of which there really isn't a shortage of.
Consider that random people have the power to summon meteors, or cause a rain of toads, or raise skeletons from the vary ground they walk, or shoot lightning from a crossbow, why would anyone assume that the Skeleton King wasn't able to cause his own resurrection? I mean, the dude was pretty evil, and there were probably an aweful lot of stories about the kind of dark magic and evil things he may or may not have done.
And for the actual falling star - for Leah or Cain to assume it was targeting Cain would be the height of narcascissm. Whether it actually was or not, I don't know.
It actually makes no sense that the Tyrael would fall onto the cathedral unless he was directing his fall towards Cain on purpose, he just forgot why because for some reason he lost his memory when his sword broke.
I think she believes Cain about the monsters and adventures. She just didn't believe the part where some ancient prophecies tell the world is coming to an end that starts from some star randomly falling from the sky and dead will rise, all hell will break loose, the demons will take over the cities and start rampaging on the sanctuary once again even after all the prime evils were already slain.

This is true. The DII Barbarian and the DIII Barbarian are two different Barbarians.
They originally intended to have them be the same person, but changed it for pretty much the reason that Valkray said: he had prior knowledge and experience dealing with Diablo and Cain. It wouldn't make much sense to have just one of the 10 class/gender combos be all knowledgeable about Hell and the other 9 be totally clueless.
Sure if would have been interesting and awesome if the male Barb was the same as from DII, but it would pretty much turn the male Barb dialogue and storyline into something totally different from the other 9 combos. Where everyone else is saying "Who's this Deckard Cain?" the male Barb is saying "Oh yeah, I know that guy. We go way back."
If You base it purely on the fast-paced dialog, then yes - no doubt You're feeling disappointed and wondering. It helps quite a bit when you read her lore journals, while keeping her past with Gillian in mind.
Still, yeah, the dialog leaves quite a bit to wish for, but that's the thing - that part is really only there to give a rough idea of why we're doing the next step, not giving detailed lore information and explanations. THAT is what the lore books and other things are for.

It has been said... that in the end of all things... we would find a new beginning. But as the shadow once again crawls across our world... and the stench of terror drifts on a bitter wind... the people pray for strength and guidance. They should pray for the mercy of a swift death... for I've seen what the darkness hides!
... I don't think it's safe here.
Hoping for Pink Chain Lightning in D3!

As I see it:
She of course did believe in the historical events regarding Old Tristram.
She didn't believe the tales about Horadrims and Nephelems, the profecy of the end time and the ethernal conflict. The vision she had in the opening cinematic might have been interpreted just as a nightmare and she didn't realize Tyrael was indeed an angel before the Act 1 closing cinematic.
Living in a world with walking skeletons doesn't necessarily means you have to believe angels.
