Yeah, that was my first impression too. It seemed like it had to be Diablo, but more and more it seems like it might be some other demon.
It's hard for me to picture Imperius siding with the demons though, for any reason. I mean that's the reason he hates Sanctuary so much isn't it? It's the kindred of demons.
He'd REALLY be digging at the bottom of the barrel. If he IS siding with demons it has to be something he just decided because his vision of right and wrong has just become so skewed.
TheWind you forget something ... the Worldstone is gone. That was the thing that kept the edyrem's powers at bay. The edyrem are supposed to be more powerful than demons and angels. That's why they are feared. They still need to hone their potential, but still.
I understand that, but do they want to do with that, protect themselves, try to be peacemakers, or join in the war. Or will they all be killed off before that can even happen?
The exploding angel however, has a radically different helm and armor.
I don't have much of a point other than the making it clear that those are different angels. This adds to my theory that Tyrael is the angel in the foreground of the exploding angel concept sketch.
Because of both of those images appearing to be in a cathedral, it might also add to my theory of there being some sort of battle/dispute between Tyrael and this other angel. And it's highly likely that Imperius is holding a grudge against Tyrael, not only for voting against him on the destruction of Sanctuary, but maybe something else as well?
Tyrael's involvement with humanity in the acts of D2 surely could have upset the high council, but is it possible that Imperius would have had other reasoning? My ideas:
1. Imperius was behind the return of Diablo to the mortal plane, and his little quest to reuinte with his brothers.
2. Imperius simply was hoping that the Prime Evils would pose a great enough threat to, for fear of Hell using humanity against them, simply destroy Santuary in order to stop them.
It's almost a sure bet that, had Tyrael not stepped in, Diablo would have succeeded. A few other people have mentioned this sort of possibility, as well as the idea of Imperius rebeling and deciding to destroy Sanctuary on his own.
1. Imperius was behind the return of Diablo to the mortal plane, and his little quest to reuinte with his brothers.
I agree with almost everything except this. The reason he hates Sanctuary is because it has the kindred of demon on it. Why would he align himself with demons much worse to get rid of demon kindred in Sanctuary.

I SAY THAT THE RENEGADE MUST BE FOREVER IMPRISONED AND HIS NEST OF DEMON-SPAWN ERADICATED!
Seeing as this is on the front page now, I thought I would sticky it and tag it
And I agree with Daemaro. Imperious would never align himself with any sort of evil. They are digusting. They are foul. They are exactly why he wants Sanctuary destroyed, because every single human is tainted with demonic ancestry.

AWESOME! Thanks!
I'll be pretty disappointed if he's allied with the demons, though the council did make a deal with Mephisto before, so possibly he has some understanding with them but I don't know, kind of stretching it.
him being allied with demons is kinda of working backwords, he's working with his worst enemy...to destroy something made by and realated to his worst enemy, then again the protect themselves and the balance of power both might work together to destroy the humans.

Yeah I'm not 100% on how to take this yet.
He despises demons but he allowed the council to make a deal with Mephisto, so he can't despise them that much. Even if Mephisto was imprisoning Inarius the way he wanted...
That to me kind of prooves what he wants is greater than his hate for demons to an extent. Where he draws the line, I have no clue.
He could feel threatend by the humans power? THough that would happen in the future, but he know's it's going to happen. I just wish we knew a little more or blizzard could point us in the right direction>_>

I doubt he feels threatened by the humans power, they are becoming increasingly weaker I believe as they breed out their magic roots.
Also how could a human effect a entity that normally stays in Heaven.
Looks like we are going to kick some Imperius butt in Diablo III! Great find, this fits very, very well! I bet we will have to help Tyrael stop Imperius!

Possibly something like that.
Wouldn't it be tragic if somehow Tyrael ended up dying and not Cain like everyone is thinking?
(wait can angels even die...? Inarius was imprisoned forever)

Who knows though.
Well soon, in angle time it would be soon atleast, the power within the humans will comeout, now that the worldstone is destroyed. And that power is more powerful then the demons and angles so really what is stopping them from going to heaven.

I imagine that Sanctuary and its inhabitants may represent something (or a lot of things) particularly abominable to him, not the usual evil. It stands as a reminder of what some angels did, and I'm sure he hasn't forgotten how "foul" some of the people are despite the choice of aligning themselves to the great High Heavens.
A lot of stories depict righteous people forgetting themselves and turning into exactly what they despise.

Well soon, in angle time i wold think, the power within the humans will comeout, now that the soulstone is destroyed. And that power is more pwerful then the demons and angles so really what is stopping them from going to heaven.
The fact I've never seen a portal to Heaven?
Town portals are one thing because I always assumed they were made with coordinates of where they are going. Creating a portal to heaven would mean you would have to have been there before I think or else you're kind of creating a portal to a almost infinite possibility of places.
That's just my opinion though, I read too much into things.

Well angles can do it, but do they actually do it by portal, we dont really know how they get here.

Once again, though, it comes back to the destruction of the Worldstone. Not only was the Worldstone weakening humans generation by generation, it was also hiding/protecting Sanctuary from Heaven and Hell. As I understand it, there is supposedly nothing now stopping Angels and Demons from coming and going as they please.
As for Imperius seeing humanity as a threat: you can bet he does. He proposed the destruction of Sanctuary due to the power of the Nephalem, and if the object dampening that power is now out of the picture, I most certainly imagine him calling for apocalypse immediately, before humans (the wild card in this war) become orders of magnitude more powerful. Imperius is, quite simply, a prick.

Well I agree on the hiding Sanctuary part but that has been over for a long time now.
Sanctuary hasn't been hidden for hundreds of years after the Sin War. Not to say that makes demons coming and going easy.
As for the weaking the Nephalem part, it weakened the Nephalem, I just assumed the humans were a weak offspring of the Nephalem. The Nephalem was a specific group of entities.

It's not FAN art... it's concept art. Meaning the development team made it in purpose of portraying part of the game.
First, here are a couple pictures of (assumed) Tyrael.

Or possibly since all three Prime Evils were sent to the abyss, he could have freed them under the conditions that they destroy Sanctuary.

and Inarius used the worldstone to weaken them not humans in general.

If humans are going to get stronger now that's kind of weird.
