So I just read the wizard short story, which is told through the view of the wizard's vizjerei master talking to what is revealed to be an assassin in the final page of the story. That gives the order of assassins two links to the current classes of diablo 3 at least.
Natalya was an assassin who disappears without notice in the middle of the events occurring around kurast. Judging by how she looks, and the fact that her set now belongs to the demon hunter, It's pretty fair to say that she changed her ways and became a demon hunter.
Now we know that the assassins were created in order to take out those mages who would consider themselves would-be wizards in order to stop them from causing too much destruction to the balance of the world (regardless of their intent), and they have now been re-tasked with dealing with this new wizard (our hero).
Is this just a cool detail of the short story, or do you think it will have any future implications?
Blizz said that they aren't really planning an expansion because they think they game might be fine as it is. Seeing how assassin was already from d2, I don't think they would bring it back even if there is a second expansion. Plus DH is too similar with the trap and vanishing aspect and the monk already has the hand to hand mele combat already covered

Gameplanet:What’s next for the development team, what’s happening post-launch? Wilson: Sleep! Vacation for some of us! But the first thing is going to be our Player vs. Player [PvP] patch. We’re already working on that. There’ll probably be something – we tend to plan a whole series of patches. We already have our “this is an emergency just in case something goes wrong-patch” that we put out this point. This is our “emergency balance-patch”, that we put out at this point. Then we have our PvP patch that we’ll put out and it’ll also probably be our secondary balance patch.
Those are our focus right now. We are starting to talk about if we’ll do an expansion. We think the game might be successful now [and] warrant such a thing. But we’ll see! We also have a group internally that’s exploring console.
They never said the weren't going to do one. But to elaborate on the thread, I'm not sure whether they'd make a hero whose role would be to find and eliminate the wizard in which we play. It'd be too controversial. Good ideas you're bringing up though.

Bashiok - Blizzard Representative - 08/01/2011 -"So how many skill combinations are there now? Well taking into account 6 active skills, all the rune combinations, and 3 passives we currently expect each class to have roughly 2,285,814,795,264 different build combinations."
"Hey, I thought you'd like the witty irony of grub-on-glowie violence!"

They have said nothing like that... All they said is that they weren't focussing on it yet, because first they need to see if the games popular enough to warrant an expansion. I think it's rather clear that they're already working on an expansion though, stuff that got cut from this games release like Ureh would definitely make a return there.
They can have class crossover. I was thinking about it before, and they could have similar classes with different resource systems or different classes with the same resource systems.
Example: the assassin would be a monk/DH cross with fast paced melee combos and traps, with an AP style resource system for fast paced trap setting (more offensive rather than defensive) and no resource orb for melee skills but rather main melee skills that accrued combo points upto 10 (arbitrary number) with larger skills that ate these combo points, so you can't lay down your massively powerful moves without doing a bit of fighting first.
see I thought that up in about 2 minutes, so there is plenty of room for creativity.
Anyone think that the assassin that killed Isendra is the one from D2? I mean, who else could kill the sorceress who whipped Diablo and the other evils. Can't believe she's dead. Doesn't that mean she is not making an appearence in D3?

Yeah but, it seems a bit strange to me that the sorceress from D2 wasn't more powerful. If the D3 wizard really is some super prodigy, then all magic users from before would just be so weak in comparison.
I think it's just building upon the diablo world. They will be including a lot wider range of. Characters, groups, societies, and religions to make Sanctuary feel more worldly.
I really can't see how they could add the assassin and make it different enough from the DH since the DH is basically the assassin with a bow.
I am reay interested in expansion classes though since they have done such a good job with the first five. Something tells me we will only see one new class with the next expansion.

You guys did notice that the wizard we play many not be the female wizard prodigy anyways.
On the reveal site they say how she inspired a group of young magic casters to follow suit and also name themselves wizards.
We play the Wizard from the story, much like we play the DH from the story. The monk in the story may or may not be the one we play. The barb is not, he spends his days guarding the caravans coming through the road from the north. It is also specifically stated in the WD story that the main WD is dead, but there is a young WD that he sees in the ghost trance that may be the one we play.
I for one am hoping that we run into the Barb from the short story or the Monk in some way in the game. Imagine coming across Kehr leading a caravan down a road and we have a quest to protect him from the khazra. Could be a random event.
