From the 'black soul stone' trailer, Blizzard wants us to either think or is hinting at us that Azmodan has won the eternal struggle in Hell and has now set his sights on obtaining the black soul stone and becoming the prime evil. But I have my sights on the theory that both Azmodan and Imperius have been secretly working together so that once Azmodan becomes a prime evil, he will become strong enough to enslave all of humanity or wipe Sanctuary out which has been a goal of Imperius' since the dawn of humankind. What does Imperius get out of this? Well humans are finally bloody gone but he also now has the chance to strike at Hell which has been left empty by a rampaging Azmodan. But Azmodan ultimately winning the Battle for Hell against Belial has all been a facade to fool Imperius for he is known to be hot headed and impulsive. However if you really want to know or have a grasp of what's going on you can google 'diablo 3 data mined' and go to the boss sheet. You'll realize while all want to take power, Diablo ultimately surfaces and a battle for the high heavens ensues. Azmodan and Belial, or Imperius may all want to take power in their own ways but ultimately the namesake of the game rises to give the game a glorious bang.
From what I have read and seen I think it will be Azmodan or Diablo again. Belial (I think thats how you spell it) Is also an option. However I think Belial will most likely be just an act boss. Perhaps one of the Archangels will end up being one, unlikely but possible.

What is this thing called "real life?" Is that some sort of expansion pack?
How is it not obvious that Diablo is still the main antagonist?
Wait a minute! You are telling me Diablo 3's main antagonist is Diablo? Where did you learn this info!
/sarcasm
Gotta agree though. I believe Blizzard has even stated that Diablo will be in Diablo 3. Which would only make sense as him being the last boss. AKA the main antagonist.

If you looked at that data mined info, it clearly shows that Azmodan is the Act 3 boss. And Belial is the Act 2 boss. So there was never a war, in-game, for Hell. It has always been a war over Sanctuary.
And in the Book of Cain, it basically references that Imperius hates the minions of Hell more than the Nephalem. So he would not team up with any Lord of Hell just to kill the Nephalem. That is also supported with the fact that the Evils recognize the power of the Nephalem and would not kill them because they wanted to use them to destroy the High Heavens.

I don't always burn. But when I do, I use hellfire.
I Reckon it will be same as what happened for D2... the supposed hero you were last time... is possessed from contact with diablo's soulstone... and becomes the new host
I'm thinking that most probably the angels, or atleast Imperius, has a finger in the workings of Azmodan or the other evils. With his history and deceptive set of goals we'll probably see him having a larger and larger role in what's happening throughout Sanctuary.
Pretty much just my 2 cents, but conspiring and major turns of plot are a pretty large part of any fictional history !
In my honest opinion, I would love to see Diablo corrupting somebody important, like how he corrupted the warrior in Diablo 1. Not in the same way, of course. I've seen some rumors of SPOILER WARNING
And I really wouldn't but much stock into the Book of Cain and its bearing on DIII; Deckard Cain repeatedly tells the reader to take what they read in his tome with a pinch of salt, that everything is still up for interpretation. I think there would be something behind Imperius' inclinations to side with Asmodan, some sort of subtle corruption he may not be aware. But I like your theory.

Be it through hallowed grounds or lands of sorrow
All in the Forger's wake is left bereft and fallow
Is the residuum worth the cost of destruction and maiming;
Or is the shaping a culling and exercise in taming?
The road's goal is the dark Origin of Being
But be wary through what thickets it winds.

has anyone ever thought about what Diablo says at the beginning of his fight in D2? "Not even death can save you from me" who's death was he referring too? His or the players? I fall along the belief that his death in D2 was all apart of his master plan. Doesn't seem like he put up much of a fight being twice the size of all of the players he could of grabbed you and popped your little head of... I think what he was doing was buying time for Baal to get to the Worldstone...
