Since Diablo 3 is coming out "Soon TM", i thought i'd finally get around to finishing Diablo 2 as i've never fully completed it before. Rather than looking up the videos on youtube, I made a Necromancer about a week ago and yesterday finished the main story and exspansion.
Anyways, my questions are:
1. When the old guy is re-calling what happened to him when he see's Baal, why does he even talk about this? He thinks the person he's talking to is Tyriel, yet constantly keeps telling him that he was there.
2. What do the corrupted soul stones do? Was it just a ploy to allow the Prime Evils to get to Earth, then open a gate to hell on the Earth side?
3. Why does Heaven allow the Prime Evils to exist? If they knew about sending Diablo and Mephisto into some banished realm, why didn't they do it earlier?
4. If Diablo is banished, how is he going to return in Diablo 3? Does this link into the soul stone question?
While reading through most of the quest text and watching all the cutscenes, these were the questions i was left with after the game ended. Along with why the hell they chose that terrible picture with Cain and the text saying "You'll now be called a Slayer!" as the final image, but that's not a question anyone can answer ^^

Many of my answers will draw on information from the books that are canon, so there's no way you could have figured this out from just playing the game.
1. When the old guy is re-calling what happened to him when he see's Baal, why does he even talk about this? He thinks the person he's talking to is Tyriel, yet constantly keeps telling him that he was there.
Exactly. He thinks it's Tyrael, so he tells him what he experienced, since except for a brief few moments in Tal Rasha's tomb Tyrael had no idea what Marius was doing.
2. What do the corrupted soul stones do? Was it just a ploy to allow the Prime Evils to get to Earth, then open a gate to hell on the Earth side?
The soulstones were made by Tyrael from the Worldstone in order to trap the three Prime Evils. But the soulstones were, as Izual told you in Act IV, inherently flawed and made it possible for the Three to influence the world around them. Baal's soulstone was furthermore used as the tool by which he corrupted the Worldstone.
3. Why does Heaven allow the Prime Evils to exist? If they knew about sending Diablo and Mephisto into some banished realm, why didn't they do it earlier?
The High Heavens are on an equal footing with the Burning Hells, they're not a superior force. And they've been trying for the better part of the Eternal Conflict. But since about 3,000 years ago there's a truce between Heaven and Hell, and Heaven is furthermore not even aware that the Prime Evils are on Sanctuary. So, fearful that the truce will be broken if Heaven finds out, Tyrael attempts to solve it in secret by having humans, the Horadrim, deal with the Three.
4. If Diablo is banished, how is he going to return in Diablo 3? Does this link into the soul stone question?
Not really. He's been sent to the Black Abyss. We don't quote know what it is, but it's assumed to be a placed where demons go after dying, and from whence they can presumably be brought back. That's the theory at least.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.

Ah, awesome, thanks alot for that! It's a shame that more of this wasn't in game, thought i suppose the way that Diablo 3 is handling lore will make things in the new game abit more easier to understand. I'm guessing there's some kind of Codex, or Lore book in D3 that you can re-read though?

Well most of it probably wasn't really though of by the time the game was made
As for where this information comes from, it's mainly the Book of Cain. You can also check out the Sin War lore reference, though that's probably going to be dull without having read the books. I would have advised you to read the Lore Summary as well, but as of this moment it's quite out of date and will need to be reworked to be fully accurate.

Replying to question 4 of how Diablo will return. I think everyone is speculating on this, but I think he will manifest through Leah. In Diablo 1 the warrior Aiden defeats Diablo, by that time he was already corrupted, and was led to think that the only way to contain the Lord of Terror was to to consume Diablo's soulstone by stabbing himself in the head with it(ouch...). Aiden and and Adria(Leah's mother) had a relationship, or so it was believed. So I think that Aiden and Adria had sexy time whilst he was perhaps already corrupted and so he made a (corrupted) child,(Don't know how else to put that). So I think, but I could be totally wrong, that over time as Leah digs deeper and comes to more understanding of the Black Soulstone and all the other stuff going on, Diablo will start to manifest inside her. Well there's my 2 cents

From reading the forum posts here, that's what i'm starting to think too.
What i hope is though, that this gets explained in game. Do you ever see Leah in Act 1 at all? I know there's that black soulstone cinematic, but i've advoided watching it since i want it to be revealed in game to me, in the proper order.
If it's done with some continuity, i'll be fine, but if you get to Diablo at Act X and she just suddenly turns, shouting "lol it was me all along!" that's going to suck.
