It has already been stated that Izual will return, and Daemaro has showed some scripts with him in it. So I believe that Izual is partnered with Diablo, being as we fight Izual in act 4 in D2. Anyways, it was Izual who convinced the Horadrim and Tyrael to use the 3 previously known soulstones to capture the prime evils when they were first exiled to Sanctuary.
But the soulstones true purpose wasnt to contain them. I believe the soulstones were to give the evils more power and bind them more permanently to Sanctuary. But what Baal and Mephisto didnt realize, was that Diablos plan was that they would all get defeated. And in doing so, this is where the black soulstone comes in. Once baal and mephisto were destroyed, and diablo, their powers/essence were transfered to the black soulstone.
And if the theory that Leah is some how harnessing essence of Diablo, this means that Diablo could come back through Leah and use the black soulstone for himself. What Azmodan realizes or finds out, is that the black soulstone was meant to harness and contain the powers of all the prime evils. And whoever has control of the black soulstone would wield the power of all the evils and hence become THE prime evil.
And obviously we will go through the game and kill Belial and Azmodan. Thus giving the black soulstone 5/7 of the evils powers. Baal, Mephisto, Diablo, Azmodan and Belial. If Diablo comes back, it would make sense for him to do so after we have defeated belial and azmodan. That way Diablo would have all the dirty work done for him, and he would have 5/7 evils powers and being that leah has the black soulstone...easy pickens..
And i think i remember that during blizzcon or some other thread, a blue/dev stated that leaving andariel and duriel around wouldnt be a good idea, being as they are still alive, just wandering the abyss... So im doubting that we kill Diablo in D3, we just foil his plans at destroying the crystal arch somehow. And that with 2 xpacs planned, 2 lesser evils are left to make the black soulstone complete...do the math. Diablo is trying to absorb all the evils into one soulstone so that he can become THE PRIME EVIL. And azmodan realizes this and it makes sense with his dialogue in the cinematic.
I've spun the idea around in my head that the Angels will get pissed at us as well by the end of this game and we'll wind up seeing a 3 way war as there are definitely a lot of angels that could give a rats ass about sanctuary. Also, it's worthy of note, that Diablo isn't particularly fond of Azmodan, so I could see a twist where Leah actually uses the dark soulstone on herself to save humanity through the use of diablo's powers, where in later expansions we'll kill her off to end the series for whatever reason Blizzard decides is valid.
All of this sounds very exciting, even if it is a little cliche. I think such a story line with how Leah is coming off thus far will really strike a chord with the players. Her design and animations seem to emanate a sense of caring for her quite well (the female leads the horror story type deal).
I am also interested to see how the breaking of the worldstone affects the human race throughout the game, if they touch on it, cause we should begin to regain the powers that the nephalem had.
