For those who have read the Sin War trilogy recently I bring you this breakthrough, which I only arrived to this day with the much appreciated, unknowingly help of the one called Genesis.
I myself am bothered by the fact that I haven't seen anyone else bothered by this, it seems as if all of the details here just settled peacefully together for most people while I had to break my head with them.
I won't cover the relevant parts from the Sin War trilogy here, thats too much for me to do at this hour of the night.
Overlords (Tyrannus Pinguis): Even the Seraphim are not immune to the corruption of the Dark Lords. One such angels, Inarius, was proud of his beauty and boasted loudly of his purity and worth. His thoughts became so clouded that he believed himself to be above both Angel and Demon, and he left the High Heavens to form his own dominion. He constructed a great cathedral of mirrored glass and crystal, and followers flocked to him, drawn by his numinous charm and wealth. Once Inarius had gathered a sizable army, he decided to prove his power.
Inarius first laid siege to an infernal temple devoted to the worship of Mephisto, but made the foolish mistake of overestimating his prowess. The armies of Inarius laid waste to the temple and killed the dark monks that dwelled within. The Three Evils had considered the vain warrior a mere nuisance and amusement until this time, but this was an insult that they could not bear.
Mephisto himself is said to have appeared at the cathedral of Inarius. He laid waste to the church and the surrounding countryside. The Lord of Hatred took the proud archangel and his followers captive. He bound Inarius with tremendous chains and slowly tore the wings from the back of the angel. Great barbed hooks were then used to stretch out the once glowing skin and his features were distorted by vile powers. Many of the followers of Inarius were given as gifts to Baal and Diablo, but the rest were molded to match the bloated image of the now crippled angel. To this day, Inarius is said to be trapped in Hell within a chamber of mirrors, his eyelids torn from his face as he is forced to gaze upon his misshapen form for all eternity. His misguided followers now serve as Hell's taskmaster taking the anguish of their lost glory out upon the bodies of others.
These grotesque demons have considerable brawn hidden beneath their layers of greasy flab. Do not underestimate their strength or their intelligence for crossing swords with them is ill advised. You will be far better served to combat them with ranged weapons or magic.
-From the manual of Diablo
The demons known as Overlords were once the followers of the Seraphim Inarius. After Mephisto crushed their armies and took their leader captive, these followers of Light were transformed and fated to serve as the taskmasters of hell...
-From the Adventure Game
When the Serephim who followed the Angel Inarius into battle were made to pay for the destruction of an infernal temple by an outraged Mephisto, many were forced into unholy servitude to the Lord of Hatred. Inarius himself was bound with tremendous chains as the wings were slowly torn from his back. Great barbed hooks were then used to stretch out his once glowing skin and his features were distorted by the vile powers of The Three.

And bare in mind that the Sin War trilogy takes place “Three thousand years before the darkening of Tirstrum”.
Not that this very old, very (I don't know how to say the word I'm looking for in English) first-drafty time line is absolutely accurate, but I find it in most parts to be quite consistent with differences of 4-10 years mostly, up to a couple of hundred years generally, still good.
But except for the apparently too obvious difference between the years, something that might not catch everyones attention at the very start is the order of things, being Izual telling the three prime evils about the Soul Stones before the event of Inarius descending to the mortal realm.
Confused?, let me clear things up about how confusing they really are.
“What of the Archangel Inarius? ... It was Inarius who first built a Cathedral of Light in this world.”
“Inarius grew overconfident and destroyed Mephisto’s temple, and Inarius was enslaved and returned with the Seraph to Hell to be tortured for all time. Kabraxis aided in Inarius’s downfall by winning them over to the demon’s side.”
“I don’t remember that,”
“The war was primarily between Mephisto and Inarius, ... Only a sage or
someone who has had priest training would know of Kabraxis’s part in the Sin War. The
Banisher of Light is a conniving demon. Kabraxis works in the shadows, stretching their
boundaries till they cover the Light. Most men who have worshipped him over all those
years have never known his true name.”

And so, trying to keep the integrity of each of the sources the only logical conclusion we can arrive to is that we are looking at too different events, and for the sake of my sanity this must be so, because if not, then the word retcon doesn't even begin to describe what we are facing.

I cannot read the diabloii link, it doesn't work at this time for me. But what this seems to be to me is a retcon; Knaak/Blizzard figured they didn't want the old story, and changed it. Happens all the time it appears, the Eredar in Warcraft went from being the prime corruptors of Sargeras to victims of his madness instead, and that's just one example.

I know that the history of the Eredar is described in the manual of WarCraft II, I don't know about the first one or the ones that came next, it could be there but I just can't account for every text ever written about WC, thats not in the job description.
The case with the Eredar is an excellent example, but to what, it depends, so a new text was added that contradicted what?, one sentence stating that Sargeras locked them away in his good days and one sentence stating that they he freed them when he went mental.
This is an excellent example yes, of how such a marginal mistake could echo so loudly in the community of the fans of the game, not that I myself would not be deeply offended by this if I was involved in WC lore but thats exactly the point, I am involved in Diablo lore, and so are allot of people here, and for three books to simply sink in as if nothing is for me incomprehensible, these are not too sentences that are being scratched off here.
If we are to understand that the a new version of the events leading to the downfall of Inarius had replaced the old one, then we are to understand that the Overlord demons, whose origins are tied together with the first version of the events, simply can't exist.
I don't think how ever that we had been left with only this choice, like I said, it is possible that we are looking at two different events, so much of the details leading to the current state of Sanctuary were so still very vague at the end of the Sin War trilogy that I do believe that a resolution can still be found here.
And to the point, in the end there can be no ifs, there can be no buts, and there can be no more abusing us Diablo fans by giving us two versions of the seemingly same event, demanding us to figure out for our selfs what to follow, we have waited 10 years, we deserve some answers, if not in the form of Diablo III, yes or no, then at least in the matter of this.
I am not a man of many means, but there are some here, I do recall one in particular who had managed a few questions to the author of the Sin War trilogy, who was confront Blizzard officials this this and demand some answers.

Let's put it this way then. The original story which can be found in the D1 and D2 manuals, along with other texts, are false. They can be viewed as a historians attempt to piece together the fragments of history available to him, and that that time, it might have seemed true that Overlords were servants of Inarius.
But, the Sin War trilogy actually gives us the information from the perspective of the real actors, the Three and the Angiris Council. This can then be viewed as the true chain of events, and the other facts just conclusions drawn by mortal men.

Phrozen is spot on here. Basically, with this kind of issue, just place mistakes as the errors of the people writing them with their conlcusions.
lol, I'm still confused, because I don't really get what is so conflicting with the two sides. Wait, I think I get it.
Old:
Inarius is but an angel that decends to the mortal realm
New:
Inarius is the mighty angel that created the mortal realm
Old:
He attacks Mephisto's temple, then is counterattacked and captured by Mephisto
New:
Uldyssian and the Edyrem bring him down, the Angiris Council deal with him, and hand him over to Mephisto as part of a deal to leave mortal men alone (for now).
In both versions he still has the same vain personality.
In the new version, we never found out what happened to Inarius once in the hands of Mephisto, but it seems reasonable to say that he suffers the same fate as in the old version - which then would also lead on to the creation of the Overlords.
So, really, there aren't that many problems. The Overlords can still exist, all that happened to Inarius can still exist, its just that Inarius is revealed to now be a hell of alot more important than he appeared to be before.
Also, both versions can exist, if you look at it this way:
(I filled in some gaps)
- Inarius creates Sanctuary
- All the events in the Sin War Trilogy take place
- Inarius is handed over to Mephisto
- Inarius somehow escapes Mephisto
- Inarius returns to Sanctuary and creates the "first" Cathedral of Light
- The Three know that he is weak and are only amused by his little escape
- Inarius builds an army and becomes more powerful than the Three expected
- Inarius gets revenge on Mephisto first for taking him in the first place (he also probably plans on getting revenge on the Angiris Council for handing him over)
- Mephisto hates Inarius for destroying his temple, and so he destroys Inarius' Cathedral and re-captures him, and turns his followers into Overlords
Where's the conflict now? Men regard his cathedral to be the first because the Angiris Council 'reset' the world and erased what Inarius had done, and thats why there are no records of him being the creator of Sanctuary or anything that happened. Only the Nephalem and Mendeln retained their memory.
And, someone needs to add into that timeline somewhere that the Nephalem (original humans, aka Rathma, Bulkathos, etc - not the edyrem) slowly rise and gain followers, creating the Barbarians and the Necromancers and the Amazon and stuff. Though, I suppose its not something that happens at a certain point, but rather something that happens over centuries.
Not that this very old, very (I don't know how to say the word I'm looking for in English) first-drafty time line is absolutely accurate, but I find it in most parts to be quite consistent with differences of 4-10 years mostly, up to a couple of hundred years generally, still good.
Hah, I can't think of a word either, and english is my only language. 'first-drafty' or even just 'drafty' makes perfect sense lol.

That sounds horrible with Blizzard just making almost an exact copy of previous chains of events to fill in a gap. I prefer a retcon over that

The Assassin, Paladin, Necromancer, Druid and Sorceress are all explained in lore, and the barbarians are convceivably "created" shortly after the Sin War ends.
But what about the Amazon? I'd like to see Blizzard explain that society in regards to the rest of the story. Are their gods in any way related to Heaven or a entirely separate pantheon standing outside of conflict, similar to Trag'Oul?

What do you mean an exact copy of previous chains of events? From where? who? what?
Also, what about this quote from Knaak?
"Obviously, what happens after Inarius is turned over to Mephisto is up for conjecture."
Should we assume that all that torture stuff including the Overlords that was previously described happens, or something new? I guess it really is 'left up for conjecture' lol.
Yeah, I know that the classes are explained in lore, but they aren't on the timeline. If there is an official timeline somewhere (and that timeline seems to be pretty good), then I just want to see them on it. Also, there was a female Nephalem warrior fighting with the edyrem against the angels and demons, who is described as being similar to Serrenthia, but much more vicious (?) (or some other describing word). She could either be one of the starters of the Amazons (because they have three gods don't they?), or another class, or simply just a warrior-girl lol.
Filling the gap is still better than having to cancel parts that already exist.
The need to have concrete facts out weighs the need to have them being original, although not optimal, deciding that one version of the lore is to replace the old one is a very short way of making the very delicate tower of cards that is the cannon lore of any fantasy world crash into the ground and leaving the fans with disappointments and doubts.
Whats the point of ever reading the boring dialogs of some game and putting them into context if their just going to change them again and again.
The option that the Sin War trilogy is not were we can see the last of Inarius can also be beneficial in a way, after all, Lilith has been established in Diablo lore (as far as the credibility of what is written about her in the Arreat Summit can go, and since it hasn't failed in any other piece of lore related text then I'd say thats pretty far) before the Sin War trilogy came out, and so we know this isn't where we see the last of her, because she isn't dead, she is just stashed away in a place where her exact location, even for someone who is aware of her existence there, should be very hard to find, except for Inarius of course who we know had already put both Lilith and Rathma at almost the same spot.
And as for the Amazon gods, Nephalem I think, its pretty vague but the Sin War trilogy did establish that the deities of the Barbarians (Bul Kathos), Druids (Feacla Gear, can deduct from Druid history), Sorceresses (Esu) and Necromancers (Rathma), are from the first generations of the Nephalem, so most chances are the that deities of Amazons follow that description also, if not than being like Trag Oul is more likely that belonging to either side of the great conflict.

What I mean is what happens in the Sin War trilogy is that Inarius createdThe Cathedral of Light and is beaten to death and given to Mephisto as a "gift" or whatever.
Now I don't particularly like the idea of Inarius espaping, building The Cathedral of Light again, being beaten again, and unltimately end up in the same position as before when Mehpisto gets him again. The fact that Mephisto was given Inarius at the end of The Veiled Prophet I view as signaling to us fans that this is where Mephisto gets his hands on the angel, and from there the story developes onwards as we know it, with him being stripped of his wings etc.

I don't agree with you. When Diablo was first created, I don't think anyone at Blizzard seriously believed it would evolve like it has, thus now afterwards they realise how they could have done things better. Rather than keeping with what they have, they wimprove upon it.
But there's also the question of how severe the changes are. If Blizzard suddenly wanted Diablo to be an angel in disguise, an undercover agent for Hell, that would be a horrible mistake to make. Which everyone knows of course.
Yet I do not think that changing the back-story of Inarius, who's never appeared in any game, was a minor part of the world in D1 and completely left out of D2, can be that fatal.
To me it's uninteresting if they change too much or too little. What's important to me is that it gets better, because that's what they should be aiming for. If it works out good changing Inarius character in the lore, then do it. If it doesn't, don't do it.

lol, Solomir, did you look that up? How long did it take you to find it? seriously, I wanna know. Because I remember it being in one of the books somewhere, but no idea where. Though, I've only read it once. How many times have you read it? And seriously, how long did it take you to find the page that mentions Esu?
hmm, it seems that both Solomir and Phrozen Dragon have good opinions on changing the lore. Clearly, changing things is okay, as long as its efficient at changing. As in, making the story as good as possible with changing as little as possible. But yea, in the case of Inarius, I like the change. I suppose, our records just had it wrong, and we really had no idea how important Inarius really is. Though, the creation of Sanctuary has never really been mentioned before, so atleast they aren't changing the name of who created sanctuary, but instead introducing one for the first time. Addition/upgrades are better than changes/shifts.
I make notes about things that are important and on what page they are as I go, makes it a little longer to read but in the end I only have to read it once and it makes my work much more easier later on.

That is quite a great idea to run with. This is something that I plan to do in the book I've been trying to write for a while now. I want to start the story from the future perspective filled with legends and lore that have been twisted and distorted from the actual events. I think it would create a wonderful sense of humanity and propaganda.

But what about the Amazon? I'd like to see Blizzard explain that society in regards to the rest of the story. Are their gods in any way related to Heaven or a entirely separate pantheon standing outside of conflict, similar to Trag'Oul?

That makes sense, but was Esu mentioned in the books?

hmm, it seems that both Solomir and Phrozen Dragon have good opinions on changing the lore.

That is quite a great idea to run with. This is something that I plan to do in the book I've been trying to write for a while now. I want to start the story from the future perspective filled with legends and lore that have been twisted and distorted from the actual events. I think it would create a wonderful sense of humanity and propaganda.
