When exactly did the Sin War take place? Not the book, the war. I know that its the war for Sanctuary which is believed that whoever wins will win the Great Conflict, which is a huuuge thing to win. But I'm confused, because whenever its mentioned they say it as if it happened a long time ago, but aren't they still fighting for Sanctuary? Isn't that what the whole D1 and D2 was about still?
The trilogy books about The Sin War seem to be more like how it actually started, rather than the whole war start to finish. Well, it seemed to have finished with a truce, but then there are a whole lot of other stories about things that happened during the Sin War but weren't part of the books. Like, the city of Ureh was supposedly at its greatest during the Sin War, but there was no mention of it from Uldyssian's part. Also, if The Sin War books were the whole thing, then it happened awefully quickly. And the angels didn't even have much time to fight. It was only one battle.
It makes more sense to say that the Sin War started at the end of the trilogy, when they made that 'truce' kind of thing. And that the war has been going on ever since. Except why do all the texts say it as if it happened a long time ago and has either stopped now or atleast isn't really being fought very hard anymore.
Aeons ago The Beginning: The Great Conflict also begins. -990 Izual attacks Hellforge and falls to the dark hordes of chaos. -985 The dark demon blade Shadowfang is created. -490 The rise of Man. -480 The Sin War begins. -40 Inarius descends to the mortal realm and begins to construct his cathedral. -30 Inarius lays siege to and destroys the infernal temple of Mephisto. -25 The forces of Mephisto defeat Inarius and his followers, laying waste to the cathedral and surrounding countryside. -10 The mage-clans of the East begin to form. 1 The Vizjerei become the largest and most powerful of the clans. Other major clans are the Ennead and the Ammit. 240 Horazón and Bartuc rise to the fore in the Vizjerei mage-clan. 250 Bartuc turns against the Vizjerei, becoming known as the Warlord of Blood. 510 The Dark Exile begins with the overthrow of the Three. 515 The Three cause strife and chaos in the Mortal Realm. Ravaging of the East for centuries. 520 Civil war in Hell. 1005 The three soul-stones meant to imprison the prime Evils are given to members of the eastern mage-clans. 1010 The Horadrim Order unites wizards from the many mage-clans. 1145 Mephisto and Baal captured in soul-stones and buried beneath the desert. 1025The Horadrim pursue Diablo into the West. 1050 Baal is imprisoned with Tal Rasha. 1100 Jered Cain’s Horadrim troupe captures Diablo in Khanduras. 1120 The Horadrim dwindle in numbers. 1140 The Horadrim begin to fragment back into individual mage-clans. There is feuding and bitter rivalry among the clans 1145 Mephisto relocates to the Eastern Capitol. 1180 The rise of the Western Empire of Westmarch 1230 Zakarum, the Religion of the Light takes hold in the West 1240 Leoric becomes King of Khanduras. 1245 Leoric and Lazarus use decrepit Horadrim monastery at Tristram as HQ. Lazarus’ will is dominated by Diablo: Lazarus releases Diablo from the Soulstone 1246 Albrecht becomes the physical focus and incarnation of Diablo’s power. War between Westmarch and Khanduras breaks Leoric’s army. Lachdanan revolts against Leoric. 1250 Diablo is ‘defeated’ by a great hero beneath Tristram, and the hero sets off for the East.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
It was written before the Trilogy came out. So yeh it does need updating.
It's still going on, but it's not as violent or as prolific as it was back then.

Why did you ask that here? It has nothing to do with the Sin War. Post a new thread if you want, its warrented for a whole new discussion. Because I really don't know what happened to him. He seemed to have been 'freed', but, to where? I'd doubt heaven. I dunno, probably the place go wherever dead angels and/or demons go.
The Sin War is not a single event, a great battle that was fought and now belongs to the past.
The Sin War was, is, an age during which, both Heaven and Hell shifted the focus of the great conflict and came to a halt pending on which side humans will choose.
This period in the history of Sanctuary kicks off with the fall of Izual to the forces of Hell and the forming of the plan to take hold of the Soul Stones and use their power by starting a race against Heaven for control over human souls, thus forcing the old battlegrounds of the two realms to remain empty, making their followers think that their leaders had gone soft that they must have abandoned their true calling and that they need to be over throned so that the battle could be taken directly into the gates of Heaven again.
You need only read the manual of the first game to know this much.
The Sin War seemingly ended with the overthrowing of the Three and their exile to the mortal plane, because at that point, the focus of the two sided of the great conflict was restored towards each other, at least in some part.
But Diablo names the Sin War, the battle for this world (Sanctuary) and all who exist here, and announces that once he releases his brothers, “The Sin War will once again know the fury of the three.”
Up to here this is still the first game.
Now we know that something in Sanctuary is most highly valued by the three Prime Evils and is seen as the ultimate means in order to gain the upper hand over the forces of Heaven and win the Great conflict, and though what it is might be disputed, there is no denying that it does exist, and that in order to harness it, the Soul Stones were required and also the corruption of the World Stone.
Now with the World Stone destroyed, it is unknown if that goal is now forever lost to the forces of Hell or if it is now fair game for both sides, or maybe something else entirely.
What is certain is that since Diablo III must have humans fighting for their lives against the hordes of chaos lead by at least Diablo himself, then the battle for Sanctuary isn't over, the Sin War is far from being over.

Ah okay, thanks. So, its really the characters in the stories that have it wrong. I always thought exactly what you said, Solomir, but the characters using the Sin War term in past tense confused me.
So, basically, if Sanctuary is involved in Heaven or Hell, its termed as the Sin War. Yeah?
And The Sin War trilogy is primarily about how the 'war' started, and ends with a kind of war decleration that lays out some rules. Right?
Solomir, I'm adding in an edited version of your explanation into the diablo wiki, unless you have any objections. (If you do, you can just edit it yourself anyway). I also wanna help you with your Sanctuary website, but the newer one seems to be down at the moment. So I'm updating the diablo wiki for now.
Go ahead and post it, I don't mind, but I don't think that the Diablo Wikia is worth the trouble, may be if they had more focus on certain aspects or more man power but until Diablo III gets out I don't think they will reach enough active editors to rise up from where they are.
As for my site, its at http://sanctuary.hostwq.net/ for now, but not all of it and the favicon version got a little screwy, I need to find a better host.
As for help, much appreciated, but not right now, I want to finish the modeling of the page creation itself and then complete a few sections before I start handing out pieces of text for scripting, found out that part needs a bit more organizing to begin with.
If you know PHP how ever, if any one how knows PHP and is willing to help, I could use a program that will automatically create a page according to the site map, link that page, put the relevant context into it and send the context in paragraph segments to a MySQL database, too lazy to ever do that myself.

Anyway, that timeline doesn't include all the events described in The Sin War trilogy.
It needs updating.

Hmm.
Obviously noone here has the answer, but its something to contemplate.
Fuck you, I'm a dragon.

Alright, well, at the least updating the Diablo wikia will later enable you to copy and paste the information from it as your desire.
Also, you should probably update your sig?
