The opening cinematic--It will start with the destruction of the worldstone--ie Tyraels sword flying into it and views of the 3 dying. Then it will show time passing and great growth of the human cities. Then a voice will begin talking, start off kind of soft but grow increasingly hard and grizzled, and talk about how it has been a time of growth and advancement for people in the 50 years since the destruction of the world stone. Populations have
increased, empires have begun to emerge, and new marvels are being built. But with this growth there has also been conflict. New ideas vs. the old. Old ways and relegions conflicted with others, and of course some old prejudices have resurfaced. Stories of hero's taken as nothing but tales and in the darkness, evil remembered.
But to all peace, comes an ending. With the growth of their powers, the paladins of zakarum have begun to grow into an even more dominant force in the world. Seeking to spread the Light to all corners of their shadowy world. In order to do this, they have become even more regimented and militarilistic in their devotion to their faith. They have spread their borders, finding followers quite eager to accept their teachings. Emboldened by the zeal with which their new converts come to their teachings, the paladins begin to grow even larger in number. Having witnessed the power of this new ferver, the (head of the paladins whomever he is) sought to harness this zeal into an empire. As every empire needs a villain, he chose to target what he believed to be the largest threat to his power, the mage clans. So the paladins of zakarum proceeded to make war on these clans. In this war they gained the aid of the Assassin clans due to their distrust of magic. The barbarians and druids had been decimated by the siege of arreat and subsequent destruction of the worldstone and were a non factor. As for the rogues, they were still in the process of rebuilding their order and could not leave the protection fo the pass in any instance. So while the mage clans were able to unite to fight this threat, they were outnumbered and entirely unorganized in their defense. So the Paladin's marched, grinding mages and their followers beneath their plated heels. Until they laid siege to the very gates of Rathma. But here at last the mage forces held and began to throw back the sieging forces of Zakarum. The forces unleashed in this conflict were blinding and powerful. When suddenly the very gates of Rathma were shattered by the forces involved. Soon the very stones of Rathma begin to burn and screams are heard from within. As the first paladins venture into the gates a chain lash flies out wrapping around the first group of paladins as they burst into flames. The paladins rush in and their screams feel the air as the fires spread. Atop the path leading into Rathma among the corpses and blood is seen a shadowy armored figure. The camera raises to overhead as forms begin pouring out of the keep into the paladin army and the fire spreads. Until the scene fades away except for the fire which spells Diablo 3!
Ok, in this instance, there isn't so much an explanation as to where it came from, just that it was released during the battle(plus, while I have some ideas, I haven't quite wrapped my mind around how I am going to have Hell gain access to sanctuary again, without the relic idea ya'll didn't approve of.) Also, I used Rathma as it is the only mage city I could find actually named. Let me know what ya'll think.

ok, I miss understood a thread on hear asking for the name of a necro city. Someone responded with Rathma, and I thought that was the correct name. If you can provide me with a name of any mage city, I will use it. Seriously, that is a minor mistake in the course of the witting.
In one of the dragon lance series', the ones where it introduces the back stories of all the characters and how they met and such, every book seemed to introduce some race you had never heard of before and the characters had never heard of before, and the books never mentioned again. I like working with what has already been provided.

I couldn't find much info on Viz'jun. I went with what there is actually some good info on. The mages as a whole are a large group and if the paladins are looking to spread their influence, the mage clans would be a logical conflict for them.
Look I personally play just barbs, so none of these groups are my favorites, so I am working with what presents itself as a natural conflict.
It doesn't have to be the mages they are at war with, that just seems to fit the story to me. There is going to have to be a magical connection in some way for the story to work.
I have no problem with criticism, but if it is just you don't like the ideas of the mages fighting with the paladins, I don't know what to tell you. Conflict is a part of human nature. In the world I am envisioning, the paladins are kind of like Rome before its empire days and the mages would be considered akin to the smaller disorganized groups that Rome conquered with their superior numbers. It is empire building in essence.
As for the assassins, that is something I was conflicted over. I had thought they hunted mages period from stuff I had seen as well as natyla's manner towards deckard in act 3, but I had also read they only hunt corrupted mages, so that part can be removed if necessary.

Well, in the D2:LoD manual, they were created to hunt down mages corrupted by demonic energies. As all mages are possible to be corrupted, they tend to be suspicious, but not openly hostile.
Oh, and although all mages are CONCEIVABLY corruptable, the Necromancer clan never has been.
They aren't targeting necs, I only used Rathma, as I thought it was a city connected with one of the mage tribes that I could name.
If the necs are not actually one of the mage tribes referred to as having been part of the horadrim, then they aren't even connected with this and I apologize.

They are a mage tribe, I'm just not sure if they're connected with the Horadrim. All I know of Diablo lore has come from reading posts on here, the D2 manuals and Legacy of Blood.
And why attack the mages? Why are the Assassins with the Zakarum? I could have sworm they fight demonic corruption, not mages in general.
Easy. Just bribe some leaders, propagate some lies, plant false evidence, and you have the assassins fighting the mages with such fervor you'd never think it possible. Oh, and perhaps some murders, assassinations, accidents etc. also help out. As well as some magic tricks.

Woot, I really like this updated version. I like it without the relic, because now its more mysterious as to where the dark power came from exactly. You just know that somewhere along the lines something went wrong and someone somehow became heavily corrupted (intentional or not). It does sound abit like the old Viz'jerei story though, but I still like it. I kinda liked how there was this new force in the Necro city, it made me think "Whoa, they have aquired some new (somewhat evil?) powers, how did that happen?"
The relic could still be in it later on, but just not the opening cinematic, and yeah, probably best to not be directly related to the Necros. But then, maybe it is?
I know, its like what, the slightest little change? Obvious relic vs. unrevealed relic? Yet somehow it makes a fairly big difference. lol, this must be so frustrating for you. Sorry.
*slight spoilers* (Moon of the Spider)
Although, in Moon of the Spider one Necromancer did help bring back Astrogah (Diablo's pet demon) to the mortal world, attempting to maintain the balance because he felt that there was too much Heavenly influence. But of course it went horribly wrong and it was a crazy idea to begin with because he couldn't control the demon. And he was working alone. Another necro came in and did not approve of him at all. Necro vs Necro lol. It was cool. So with your relic thing, maybe later on in the game it could be revealed that its a lone necro responsible for it, possibly getting a few others to his cause - but a whole city of them agreeing to play with a possibly demonic relic? It just seems abit too much.
*end spoilers*
Necros are techically a mage clan, they are definitely spell casters from the eastern jungles. However, in The Kingdom of Shadow there is a Necromancer and a Viz'jerei and they hate each other. Absolute HATE lol. Which is surprising for a Necromancer because they are usually emotionless. But yeah, I don't think any of the mages actually like the Priests of Rathma at all. (Rathma is a powerful character in The Sin War trilogy, the very first Necromancer trained by Trag'oul personally).
The necromancers, although powerful spell casters and mages in their own right, have never been offically accepted as a mage clan, like the Taan or Vizjerei. Even before they mage clans split back up, dissovling the Horadrim alliance thingy they all had.

So if a city's been named after him, I'd guess it's somehow related to the necros. I've never heard of it though.
As in never.
I couldn't quote from the actual thread, (darn you Phrozen!) but I was wondering what you meant by that Fingolfin?
