The opening cinematic--It will start with the destruction of the worldstone--ie Tyraels sword flying into it and views of the 3 dying. Then it will show time passing and great growth of the human cities. Then a voice will begin talking, start off kind of soft but grow increasingly hard and grizzled, and talk about how it has been a time of growth and advancement for people in the 50 years since the destruction of the world stone. But that with this growth there has also been conflict. New ideas vs. the old. Old ways and relegions being abandoned. Stories of hero's taken as nothing but tales and in the darkness, evil remembered.
But to all peace, comes an ending. With the loss of the majority of their powers, the paladins of (wherever they call home-sorry haven't read the books, just picking up lore from where I have read it here) have become even more regimented and military in their devotion to their faith. They have spread out to become the dominant faith in this new age. As every empire needs a villain, the paladins chose to make war on the Necromancers. In this war they gained the aid of the Assassin clans due to their distrust of magic. The other magic clans wished to aid the necromancers, but with their powers dilluted as they were, did not relish attracting such attention. As for the Barbarians, their numbers had dwindled, never truly recovering from the siege of arreat, and now were a truly rare site to see and like them, the rogues are too few in number to leave there keep. So the Paladin's marched, grinding necromancers and their followers beneath their plated heels. Until they laid siege to the very gates of the Necromancer enclave(again, not familiar precisely with the setup of the Necs) itself. And now, not only did evil remember, it stirred. For in the deepest recesses of the necromancer enclave, the lords of the necromancers had been working with a relic in order to restore their magic and let it loose on the Palladin forces at their door. In their desperation turning to practices that had long been dissuaded and even abandoned by the Necromanic tribes, the relic at last stirred! Pulsing with an aura of purple light it rose from the table and began to spin! As the gates to the enclave are forced open screams are heard from within and the very stones of the enclave begin to appear to burn. As the first paladins venture into the gates a chain lash flies out wrapping around the first group of paladins as they burst into flames. The palladins rush in and their screams feel the air as the fires spread. The camera raises to overhead as forms begin pouring out of the keep into the palladin army and the fire spreads. Until the scene fades away except for the fire which spells Diablo 3!
There, that is my opening cinematic. Long winded I know. Just curious what ya'll think about it before I actually stick any of the story ideas out there. Don't want to take a stupid route before I even get started.

It definitely sounds like a cool cinematic. I can imagine it clearly, and it gets me alittle excited lol.
Except, yeah, the Necromancers seem to be abit out of character. You definitely need to read the books, then you will understand the world much more and the nature of the Priests of Rathma. Start with The Sin War on how it all began.
Call them the Paladins of the Zakarum, the name of their religion, rather than a location, because they are pretty much everywhere. Oh yeah, because they already are the dominant faith in Sanctuary. They always have been.
And we have never been told the name of the 'City' of Necromancers. Its only mentioned in the manual. I can't imagine them using a seemingly evil relic though. Well, they might use it if they truely feel that there is too much Heavenly influence in the world. But then again, they are much more likely to use the powers of Trag'oul to push back Heaven rather than use demonic powers - which is likely to risk upsetting the balance in the favor of Hell if they should succeed. (They wouldn't use Heavenly powers either).
But yeah, it sounds like a well done cinematic (if the lack-of-research factor is ignored, that is).
Thanks, I am admittedly not up on my lore in regards to sanctuary. However, I never said anywhere in my post that the necs were evil. In fact, personally my opinion from writting it was that if anyone truly was evil in that cinematic it was the paladins.
Every empire in history flourished and grew the most during an expansionists zeal. Napolean declared war on the idea of monarchies to keep the zeal of the french revolution going. Rome was at its height while it continued to expand its borders. Any fledgling empire needs a bad guy to rally its forces against.
Therefore, in my cinematic, the world had changed in 50 years. The paladins had become a very militaristic order with their powers reduced. The other tribes have become greatly reduced with the loss of their magic. So when the paladins began grinding up the much smaller forces of the necs like meal, like any group faced with extermination, the necs got desperate. They weren't worried about the balance, they were worried about self preservation. Plus, I would reckon the necs had no clue what the relic was. With the loss of magic, one can imagine the life span of the mages became much shorter. Therefore with elders lost and knowledge lost, the necs messing with the relic were entirely clueless of it origins. Again they were DESPERATE. Unless of course the Necros wouldn't be concerned with their own extinction. Which would be hard to believe considering they are human.
That is what all of that is based on. I am quite aware that Necs aren't evil.
However, my understanding of the destruction of the worldstone was that it was going to sever the connections between heaven and hell to sanctuary and therefore a new connection would have to be formed.

A really good cinematic, but I also have a bit of a problem seeing the whole situation as plausible. The idea of the necromancers becoming the scapegoats though could definately work. The question is, how original would that appear to a new audience?
Then again perhaps Diablo doesn't need to be original, and perhaps players don't want originality.

Phroezen, would you explain what is unbelievable about it. It is general human nature. Prosperity sets in, we begin to rebuild, one faction or another decides to make a power grab.
While the Necros are not evil, they would be the easiest group for the paladins to convince themselves and the general populace that they were evil. In any empire building, you always need an enemy and an example. If the paladins were to outright crush the necros, it would make it much easier for them to convince the other groups to submit to their will. As for influence, I could see there being a demonic influence on many sides of this mess.

Well, if you read the books you find that the Worldstone was not the source of magic, it was what restricted humans from using it. Magic is also in the form of will, you will stuff to happen, and the mages use words and motions to amplify those effects. I like it.

Sounds like the relic is something connected to Diablo himself. But because they are necromancers, I think they would recognise the connection.
Also, assuming that the ties to Heaven and Hell have been disconnected, the Necromancers would still have power, because their power comes from Trag'oul who is part of Sanctuary. Trag'oul was born with Sanctuary, but somehow unkown to Heaven or Hell. He pretty much is 'mother nature'. But who knows, maybe destroying the Worldstone affected Trag'oul too... somehow.
Maybe if you had a new mage clan instead of necros, it could work. Also because the whole 'paladin vs necromancer' thing is abit of a cliche.
Moon of the Spider has abit of Zakarum vs Necromancer in it, portraying their fear and hatred of Necros.
Oh yeah, and using the Zakarum religion as a metaphor for real-world religions and how freaking power-hungry they are is a great idea. Love it. I love anything that shows them like that. The movie Merlin (the one with Sam Neil in it) has that kind of thing too. Magic vs Holy. Except I don't like how magic loses and dissappears forever, turning into our world today. I don't like it though because somehow it fills me with regret, thinking that there was once a chance for our world to still be filled with magic and there was something I could have done (even though I wasn't alive lol). So I hope that Blizzard doesn't choose to eliminate magic from the world with the destruction of the Worldstone, that would be depressing lol.
Ok, I had always thought that the worldstone's connection to Heaven and Hell and everything had something to do with the magic in the world. Hmm will reconsider and do a rewrite on some things in that case.
I am really not into the whole creating a new group thing. It is way to dragon lancish for me. Write a book create a whole nother race of being you never knew about and will never see again.

I say what Atrumentis said, sort of. The relic sounds really nasty and evil, and the necromancers would be the first to recognize such a thing, because of their connection to Trag'Oul. The mage clans however are all purely mortals susceptible to what they themselves decide to be true and false. They would perhaps use such a weapon.
But, the paladins obviously know nothing about Trag'Oul or anything else, therefore I'm sure they would turn against the necromancers if the situation demanded it. What I doubt is that the necros would be beaten and pushed back so severely.
