I don't know about any of you people, but I'm a huge fan of side quests.
It's been incredibly successful in alot of new games, and it's hard to find a new RPG without them.
What would be neat, is if you could talk to pretty much any civilian you see wandering the streets of whatever town your trying to save. Since the war in Sanctuary has such a mass effect, I doubt that you'l find anyone who doesn't have a problem that needs solving, and with some sort of reward in return.
Let me know what you think about this idea, and throw out some examples if you want.
Maybe the occasional guy that jips you (no reward) in the end.
Can't have everyone being good. Lol.
And maybe its random. Like one game you do a sidequest an get a ber, next time he hits you upside the head and you wake up in the inn and the next time hes a poor guy and can only afford to ive you 5 gold pieces, all from the same sidequest...
Hard to do. Either you get to do a shitload of programming, or the quests become random. And I think we've stablished on this forum up to this point that random quests are not in the spirit of Diablo.
And yes. I'd like to get screwed off once of twice. But then I'd also want the opportunity to do a "follow-up" quests which involves hunting him down in order to get my reward. Or simply kill him if he doesn't bother to run
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I would really like the idea of sidequests. One of the things that turned me off about diablo 2 after having played it for 5 years was the fact that it was always the same. I just wish that it wasnt so linear and side quests would be a great way to do this. I think having multiple ways to get through the game would be good, and you could have different endings, like the angel vs devil thing we were talking about months ago.
And ones that are hard to find, or that you find just randomly, like in Diablo 1.
More quests from tomes, they are always good. Arkaine's Valor, Chamber of Bone, Halls of the Blind, Warlord of Blood, The Blackened Tower.
And random quests like Zhar the Mad, Gharbad the Weak.
And lots of badass quests, The Butcher, The Skeleton King's Tomb, Ogden's Sign.
Long and hard side quests need good rewards too, I risk my neck killing some necromancer who betrayed the entire world and all I get is my name scribbled on an item. Lamo. Unless you a cool name. Ragnar's Mighty Sword of Slaying!!!

Sidequests are fun, but they aren't Diablo. It starts to become hard to balance main and side quests.
I agree that Diablo isn't riddled with side quests, but you can't say that Diablo doesn't have side quests. What about the Countess quest. That could be considered a side quest as you don't need to do it to get through act one. And the (i forget the name of it) temple quest in act 3. The first time I beat the game, I completely missed that quest. Side quests aren't the basis of Diablo, you are correct, but Diablo still has a couple.
Side quests would be great in Diablo. It could offer a new way of leveling instead of just grinding and doing Baal runs, diablo runs, or cow runs.

Diablo I
You don't have to do the butcher (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do the poisoned water supply (if it's in your game)
You don't have to The Skeleton King's tomb (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do Gharbad the Weak (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do Ogden's sign (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do Arkaine's valor (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do the magic rock (if it's in your game)
You dont have to do the Chamber of Bone (Chamber of bone is always in your game)
You don't have to do the Halls of the Blind (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do Zhar the mad (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do the black mushroom (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do the Anvil of Fury (if it's in your game)
You do have to do the Warlord of Blood (if it's in your game)
You don't have to do Lachdanan (if it's in your game)
You do have to do The Arch Bishop Lazarus (The Arch Bishop Lazarus is always in your game)
You do have to kill Diablo (Diablo is always in your game)
Out of 16 quests you can only ever do a maximum of 11, and of that 11, you only have to really do two. three is you have the ogden's sign quest and/or the warlord of blood.
So that makes it 2/11 which is 0.1818 recurring, so 18.18%
So that makes it 3/11 which is 0.27 recurring, so 27.27%
So that makes it 4/11 which is 0.36 recurring, so 36.36%
Diablo II
-Act 1
you don't have to do the Den
you don't have to kill Blood Raven
You don't have to save cain, but it is somewhat story related
You don't have to do the tower
You don't have to find the Horadric Malus
You do have to kill Andariel
-ActII
You don't have to kill Radament
You have to put the staff together
You have to smash the alter
You don't have to find Horazon's Journal, not if someone who has already done that quest opens the portal to the canyon of the Magi for you.
You don't have to kill the Summoner, not if someone who has already done that quest opens the portal to the canyon of the Magi for you.
You do have to Kill Duriel
-Act3
You don't have to find the Golden Bird
You don't have to find the Gibdinn
You do have to piece together Khalim's Will, even if you get rushed it still finishes this quest for you, even if you didn't find a single one of Khalim's items
You don't have to find the book of La'Essen (or whatever it is)
You do have to kill the council
You do have to kill Mephisto
-Act IV
You don't have to kill Izual
You don't have to smash Mephisto's soulstone
You do have to kill Diablo
-Act 5
You don't have to kill Shenk
You don't have to free the Barb's
You don't have to free Anya
You don't have to kill Nilhathak
You do have to Kill the Ancients
You do have to kill Baal.
That means out of 27 quests, you only have to do 1 or 2 in act 1, 3 or 4 in act 2, 3 in act 3 1 in act 4 and 2 in act 5.
that means you only have to do 10 or 12 quests out of a total of 27. That's less than half.
10 = 0.037 recurring, so 37.03%
12 = 0.44 recurring, so 44.44%
Tehy don't have to load it up on side quests like Baldur's Gate II, which I think has about 300 or something, but I think there should be a fairly large variety of different side quests, some class related, some hard, some easy, some long, some short, but no FED-EX (Go fetch me a shrubbery and bring it here) or Slug fest (Kill x amount of y type of monster).

It's the decisions you make when you have no time to make them that define who you are.

Diablo has multiple side quests, people just don't see them.
I still like the idea of random rewards though...
