A game set during the SIn War is a possibility, but generally speaking that makes it a prequel, and it probably wouldn't be named Diablo 3. for most series 3 comes after 2, and is a sequel. There are a few exceptions.

-Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's First Law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth.
Act 1: The Crystal Throne -This act's main town is the great halls of Heaven which include the "leader" angel and many other angels. Your main goal is to find out who's causing all the terror in Heaven and you will start with basic gear. The blacksmith in this town will have the ability to imbue items with light powers while the healer/magic person will have the abilty to give you a permanent enchantment. You will battle you way through light zombies (good people who died and went to heaven that got turned into zombies) and many other weak foes. The big boss in this act and the person that has been corrupting all the angels is none other but Tyreal himself, twisted by the Lord of Terror himself. Killing this old archangel will allow you to gain the Great Angel's trust so you can start your journey to the Burning Hells.
Act 2: The Passage of the Heavens - As you start your journey to the Burning Hells, you find yourself at the great gateway to the mortal world and you see that passage way has been corrupted and is now dangerous to even come close to. The town in this act is half mortals who escaped before the passage closed and half angels. You learn from Hadriel (angel you saw before you enter the Chaos Sanctuary in Diablo 2) that there is another way to go down to the Mortal Realm but it would be extremely dangerous. You will need to find the Heaven's Eye, which will have the ability to see the way through the passage. But once you find it and go through the passage, the big boss awaits you at the very end, Belial, the Lord of Lies. Once you defeat him, you will make the passage useable allowing you to go back and forth easily.
Act 3: The Throne of Sin - Back in the Mortal Realm, you see the impact Hell has made on it. The houses burn with fire and the entire earths is just a big wasteland. There is a small town with survivors by Lut Gholein (I think i spelled it right...), which is now in ruins. There you will meet Anya and Atma, the only two survivors from Diablo 2. Atma will heal your wounds while Anya will tell you that you must find the Throne of Sin, which is guarded by Azmodan, because it holds the answer where the Infernal Gate has been moved. You must travel to Arcane's Sanctuary and to another place called Palace of Pain. There, you will find two important artifacts that when put together, they will make a key to unlock the City of Sin, a large castle where the Throne of Sin is located. Of course, the big boss is Azmodan which then afterwards gives you the location where the Infernal Gate is.
Act 4: Hell's Gate - After locating the place where the Infernal Gates are, you travel to an unknown region in teh Mortal Realm where it is known to be the home of the Stalkers (a new class I made up. To know more about it just go to the "things we want to see/have in diablo 3" thread and click on the last button. It's near there). Here, all is burning. There is a Stalker town located underground. From there, they tell you that Diablo has sent the Great Demon Horodan to slay all mortals in the area and to move the Infernal Gate to the Passage of Heavens when he is done to unleash all hell in heaven. Horadan is much more powerful that Belial and Azmodan since he was he is the son of Diablo himself. You must go across the burned jungles to stop this demon before its too late. Once you do, you can finally enter the Burning Hells...
Act 5: The Abyss - Very few mortals have walked on this ground and lived to tell the tail. You find yourself in a town full of Hell Mages (another made up character. Do the same thing like I said with the Stalker). You must battle your way through demons and pits of darkness. A big difference in Hell in this game is that instead of getting more fire as you go on, this Hell gets darker and smaller as you go through it. But once you fight your way through, the ultimate challenge arrives. Diablo, the Lord of Terror, appears. He is one bad ass and is sick of getting his ass kicked in the previous games and is now ready for revenge. But after destroying this demon, you finally have eteral gory and you become the hero of Heaven as in now, the eternal war between Heaven and Hell is over.... for now....

"You are like a rose in a great rose field. Each rose is so beautiful to me. But if one dies... I can still look at many other roses..." God of Darkness.
That eh... seems slightly out of place with the story so far. Also completely removes the interaction between humans and divine forces, as well as the power of heaven, which seems to have been pretty easily destroyed after countless eons of evenly matched wars.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
I don't know to tell the truth because I just heard a lot of rumors thatin Diablo 3 you will be starting in Heaven so that's why I made it that way...
and tehsickleman, you must remeber that you killed a lesser evil in the weakest act in Diablo 2.
and i never read the diablo books as well....

How do you start in heaven? Wouldn't that make you.. dead? And how do you manage to kill an Archangel in the weakest act?
and tehsickleman, you must remeber that you killed a lesser evil in the weakest act in Diablo 2.
