Problem:
Diablo 2 game load times on bnet (ver 1.13) increased by approximately 5 seconds and lag in game renders game unplayable for the first 20 - 30 seconds of the game.
Background:
I have 2 computers that are running Diablo 2 currently.
* One is my older Win XP setup with considerably less everything (RAM, CPU, video card, etc.) and runs the game flawlessly (no lag, no video issues, etc.)
* The second is the newer beefed up machine with considerable more power running on Windows 7. This machine appears to have a cornea when a new game is started and lasting until about 20-30 seconds after the game has commenced.
So I did try things (really, I didn't just post before reading and stuff!):
---- I tried this suggestion from incgamers ----
1. Navigate to your Diablo II folder (e.g. C:/Program Files/Diablo II)
2. Right-click Game.exe and select Properties
3. Click the Compatibility tab
4. Check "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" and select Windows 98 / Windows Me
5. Check "Disable visual themes"
6. Check "Disable desktop composition"
7. Check "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings"
------------------------------------------------
Note: I put a compatibility of "Windows XP Service Pack 3 " though.
* I tried running the video test and taking Blizzard's suggestion.
* I ensured that the program is run as administrator.
Note: When I create the game, lots of symbols going through a loop in the top left corner of the screen like other people have posted, but then it lags like mad.
Lastly, there are no extraneous processes running in the background (process explorer shows only core processes running), memory isn't an issue, duel video cards shouldn't be an issue, and CPU shouldn't be an issue (i5) but I could be wrong.
Running the program in compatibility mode (for winXP, etc) is not necessary and will only reduce performance.
What video mode did the video test suggest? Also, make sure to try the other video modes as well as your video card might not properly support Blizzard's suggestion.
Hmmmm. The only reason that I run the program in compatibility mode was because the game wouldn't run otherwise. The game attempted to start and locked up on a black screen. Putting it into compatibility mode was the only thing that seemed to fix it (back when I was troubleshooting it). I'll revisit that tonight to see if I can run it with compat mode.
The video mode suggested 3D mode (I understand from reading other posts that the tool will suggest this for almost any computer today that supports 3D). I'll try the 2D mode (since there were only 2 suggestions from the video test) tonight as well.

That post to the previous problem is based on a netbook. Netbooks, believe it or not, have the processing power of a pentium... combine that with all the modern processes in todays operating systems, and you get a slow but machine.
Please post your computer specs, or brand/model.
The problem I have with my computer is that it is WAY overkill, and it causes the game to get insane fps (more than 1-1.5k. This causes... well.. shuddering in my monitor.. I didn't care too much, as I mostly play in windows mode, and the problem isn't as bad. To fix it I would need to find a way to cap the FPS. And no, Vsync in ccc or nvidia control doesn't work with D2.
My friend and i have the same problem. My computer is latest and greatest. Windows mode helps a little but even still once i enter a room i have to wait a little bit before i can do anything.
Strange, I don't need compatibility mode to run D2 on Win7, only to enable the scroll wheel.
If you want the best possible performance you should try a glide wrapper which will enable the Glide video mode. It happens to be the video mode D2 runs best on.
Btw, how about posting your specs? It might help in solving this issue.
Absolutely .. sorry I'm @ work atm. I'll post later tonight. Any preferred / recommended tools to make that task easier?
I was having similar problems with Starcraft two. While I did not figure out what was wrong with SC2, I did find something interesting that may help you. Apparently when something is easy to draw for the graphics card, it will try to draw it as fast as possible, over and over and over. This can, obviously, cause overheating. You may want to check what the framerate is, and if it is really high, cap the framerate and that should reduce the lag.
Or it could be something completely unrelated. *Shrug*
Warkun, do you have any antivirus or firewall software installed, and if so, which? These software suites can definitely affect the way diablo 2 runs if they allow it to run at all.
Netbooks (and other computers) also sometimes have other software installed by default or layered with the shipped OS. My mom has an Asus that has some crappy and essentially useless Asus-made "OS" that runs before the actual Windows 7 OS boots. Not saying that that exact scenario is the case with yours, but it is likely that there are unprecedented software conflicts of some kind. (Because: Win7 (Ultimate and Home) = no problems here.)

Thank you all very much in helping to troubleshoot this issue. A fix appears to have been found. There was a new driver update at the beginning of May for the Nvidia GeForce GTX 460 (driver version 8.17.12.7533) that I wasn't aware of. I downloaded this, installed it and have played about 5 games without any issues of lag or latency. *aka sweet*
Hi, sorry to be the random-guy-showing-up-and-Necroing-stuff but, well, I'm having this issue and nothing seems to solve it.
I've tried running both a directdraw wrapper and, now, the glide wrapper listed in this thread along with the generic 'compatibility mode' line Blizzard gives me.
I always found that running D2SE fixed any of my issues with Diablo 2 and Win 7. Now of course i use this because of mods but you can run any patch as well. I wont post the link as I'm not sure the moderators thoughts on it but a quick google search should bring you to it.
Funny enough, it's actually Eastern Sun that I am trying to get this resolved to play.
With ES being an extrenal .exe, I'm not sure this won't conflict or... work? But, I'll give it a try. If not, I can always do a clean install and start over.
EDIT:Well, it definitely helped. My fiancee's hunch that it was a v-sync problem seems to be pretty close. I'm having the issue much less frequently with that option enabled, but of course that locks me out of the content I actually want. ;________;
EDIT2:
Alright, I seem to have found an... well, at least partial solve. If you right click on the shortcut and go to properties, where it says 'Target' (the same field that you can append with -w to run in windowed mode) you can append -vsync which forces v-Sync and solves about 80% of the 'hanging' issues. It still does it a bit, much much less frequently.
Between Compatibility Mode, a DirectDraw or 3dfxGlide Wrapper and this -vsync mode, I think that will resolve most issues. The options below compatibility mode (640x480 Resolution, Disable Desktop Stuff, etc.) doesn't seem to help at all. So, there you go. We can all add that to our 'list of fixes for D2 on Windows 7'.
I never had issues with windows 7 and Eastern Sun mod.
Make sure that you run with Admin Rights and disable themes and desktop composition. Also ES runs better with the LoD cd of 1.10 or earlier since with the LoD 1.12 disks it does not check the cd anymore for DRM and ES mod needs to have that CD DRM check. There are work around for it but sometimes it does not work that well.
There is also a version designed for 1.12 but it has issues.

On Strike and supporting Fallout 4 Mod Makers
Some fallout 4 mod makers have had their mods stolen and uploaded and downloaded on Bethesda's site for the Xbox One.

Also .. researching more on this very site .. I did manage to dig up an old thread on a variation of this:

Nevermind then.
Nope .. no antivirus software to interfere.
Ok .. so the specs would be:
Intel Core i5 760 @ 2.80 GHz (4 Cores)
ASUS Sabertooth 55i
4GB DDR3 RAM
2 x NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 (1GB mem)
1TB HDD (D3 installed)
60GB SSD (O/S drive)
I will have to look into the Glide wrapper as I admit that I wasn't sure if it violated Blizzard's user agreement and I want(ed) to stay legit.
Thanks.
It is not dead, but in its golden years. Keep on Playin'!
Appreciate the help DiabloFans!
