This may be well known advice, but it came in very handy for me once I discovered it so it may help someone else. When you level a character you get lots of upgrades, and gems are very valuable, but I kept removing my gems for 100,000's gold when all you have to do is salvage the old item and the gems will be placed in your inventory. I never dared try this before because I thought I would lose my gems, but I had an old item with some trash gems in it so I salvaged it.
I knew this a long time ago, before the days of the expansion. Just a word of warning though, vendor items cannot be salvaged.
Yeah, I noticed that. I bought a slight upgrade for a few thousand gold at a low level and it was a big mistake when I realised it was now going to cost me hundreds of thousands.
I haven't leveled any characters for such a long time, so I never had items that were so valueless that I could trash them.

Good tip! I've noticed that vendor items can't be salvaged but have not been burned by sticking a valuable gem into one. Given that my level 20 Crusader is running around with Royal gems socketed, that's an expensive mistake I could easily have made.:D

Then you can always re add the socket.
Now this is something new. It would have saved me 100k gold.
