I have no problem with this art style IF...IF it is restricted to a small portion of the game, a certain zone within the act, but if so much of the game is this bright and fluffy I would be rather dissapointed, but in the end it would only upset me for a few days upon playing the game I'm sure. But yea, for the most part I agree with TC. Darker palette = Diablo universe
Actually, I kinda like the current style Blizzard is using right now...
It is a little bright at some locale but I think overall, they preserved the dark gloomy atmosphere...
Uh oh, we've hit a snag. I knew this would happen, there's always one. Guess who you are. You don't seem to understand a different, yet equally simple concept - you appear to grasp variety in some feeble way, but you don't understand the idea of context.
No wait, you're right, I was endorsing an official recommendation to Blizzard to create some Unicorn pasture with rolling fields of purple flowers and sparkling waterfalls glimmering in all of the colors of the rainbow off in the distance. You're genius.
Hey, quick question; what are the chances you have an entire world contained in the interior of an ashen cathedral? Hmmm... Oh, and who got all the cultures of the Diablo world together and taught them all the same architectural principles? No company with an art department as talented and versatile as Blizzards is going to submit to your impotent imagination. They're going to use those artists to create interesting, living worlds. Sure, Diablo should have a 'look', but achieving that is more complex that 'just make every level look the same'... why am I even bothering?
You're talking to me, a concept artist, about design elements.
Variety in context, dolt.
Snap.
u seriously sound like youve never touched a diablo title...there is plenty of variety without giving up its gritty style, do those colorful, bright, xbox glossy bloom graphics really add to, or take away from the atmosphere? go back and play d1 and d2 over...
similar architecture? go visit rogue encampment then lut gholein and the wander off to kurast, tell me what looks similar...

Remember the String of Ears
"to the worm in horseradish, the world is horseradish."
I don't get the bright fluffy unicorn feeling I'm hearing about... As that barb was stomping a mudhole into those zombies.. with the blood flying everywhere... It felt just like Diablo.
So what if the trees aren't all dark green... so what if they updated their color palette just a bit... It's still going to be a GREAT game... and I'm going to buy it and enjoy it.

Yeah, we've seen basically 2 environments of D3 so far and people are already complaining lol. D2 graphics looked like crap when it came out, simple as that; no detail whatsoever. D3 graphics, imo, look like night and day in comparision to D1 and D2. I'm pleased with D3's new art direction and the gore factor seems increased too, which is always a plus!
it could do with a little bit more shadow but just a little but i SWEAR to god if people like you (who want it really grey) get your wish and they change it and it make the game more boring because of the dull colours. I will enter your dreams and rape babies infront of you !
Im 100% happy as it is and i am a harcore diablo fan. I was second on the us west ladder for about a year.
I see there are a lot of people saying that we shouldn't complain, etc, that we should thank blizzard for making the game.
However, what we have to understand is that NOW is the time to be critic of the game. NOW the community has to step forward and "complain" because there's probably still time to rectify certain design decisions, and elements of the game that are not yet set in stone.
Like the OP said, the color/design of the game is too fantasy looking. Diablo ISN'T FANTASY. IT'S NOT TOLKIEN. It's the struggle of humanity against the powers of HELL (and maybe heaven, too). I'ts a story that could fit in the Bible, for Christ's sake. Things need to be darker, more edgy.
Extremely well said. They are saying they are trying to make colour scary, it can be sure, but it just doesn't FIT IN into the world. At the LEAST they have to make a compromise because they are drifting away from the game and world we all love so much. These pictures are going in the right direction but IMO they are a bit to drastic. There needs to be a place in the middle. Also wheres the Dark Ambiance? Wheres the dead bodies, pentagrams. They be going for a game for a broad audience. But shit. Look at D2 look at the people it attracted. Look at the broad audience it attracted, everywhere I look D2 fans are popping up and the uproar is stuff these colour schemes.
That being said, I like colour, I play WoW and am not bothered by the colour and shape of the objects etc, because it fits in. Diablo is so much different and TBH what they have shown us dosn't represent despair and destruction; especially the dungeons. This blue/green tinge REALLY has to go. It's now that we have to speak our minds and present our ideas to Blizzard and try to make a difference to it.
I think they have to make a compromise. Something in the middle of these pictures. It needs colour, but not as much as they have now and they really really need to take out this green tinge.
You guys are seriously over-exaggerating the graphics...seriously. You are confusing graphics with MOOD. Mood is what immersed you in Diablo 1. Not the various shades of gray and brown that comprised the entire color palette of the game. Diablo 2 was colorful, but it didn't have nearly the mood that the first one did.
If you'd listen to the developers, they're trying to keep it dark in terms of emotion without limiting the color palette. The colors, environment, atmosphere, and the music definitely make it seem much darker in terms of mood and emotion than Diablo 2 was. It's a gritty, moody atmosphere, yet it still contains color, miraculously, like everything else in the world.
You know there are some pretty evil things in the world that have color - Diablo for instance, he's bright freakin red. Poisonous animals are usually the most vibrant and obnoxious in terms of colors. Color does not equal happiness and rainbows, and I'm not sure why everybody seems to equate it with such. If you really don't want color, you might want to go play Quake 1 or Diablo 1.
As for graphics technology "sucking", only using shaders for bloom and water? Not using bumpmaps? Are you people blind? Did you even play a game that existed before bumpmaps did? Do you even know exactly what they are? I'm sorry, but this is baseless whining, all your "improved" screenshots are, are oversaturated abominations with color scattering. How well do you think that would fly with the modern gamer that spent hundreds of dollars on his testosterone inducing man beast of a video card for crystal clear graphics at blistering speeds, or for that matter, how do you think it would fly in reviews? I assure you, it would not.
World of Warcraft has a distinct art style, and I'm sorry it bothers you, but any parallels you draw between what was shown yesterday, and the stylized graphics of World of Warcraft...are pure fantasy.
As some people have already said, we are way too early in game development to say that this is the final design.
This is a game of death, blood and destruction, they're not going to make it look like a kids game.
change graphics color is very easy but these cartoon 3D models has already finished, how did dev group improve it?this is real big problem...why diablo3 model looks so cartoon?because those artists who have designed Warcraft.

It is actually a completely different and independent team that created Diablo 3. There are three independent teams at Blizzard right now. The game has it's own art style, and I don't see any similarity to World of Warcraft whatsoever.

Only in Theory they do.
And I agree, anything past the second is excessive.
Hahahaha, holy shit. I love how you can still maintain that bleak, dreadful tone while still using color. More rainbows would be a nice touch though.

My 2 cents...
