1. Magic Weapon Increases melee dmg by 20% (Alabaster - provides 30% of melee dmg caused as life)(45% With lvl 7 rune)
2. Spectral Blade Strikes all enemies in your path for 35% wpn dmg 3 times(Alabaster - Critical damage heals 70% of dmg done)(100% with lvl 7 rune)
3. Frost Nova frost explosion freezing enemies for 4 seconds, 12 second CD (Alabaster - if the nova hits 5 or more targets your critical strike chance is increased by 30% (50% with lvl 7 rune)
4. Energy Armor Increases Defense by 20% but lowers arcane power (Alabaster - Increases precision by 25% while active)
5. Meteor Summon a meteor for 450% wpn dmg + 65% wpn dmg to enemies that stay in the area for 3 seconds (crimson - increases initial dmg to 788% and dmg over time to 114% (900% initial dmg and 140% over time with lvl 7 rune)
6. Mirror Image(Crimson - images spells do 40% of the dmg as your own)(70% with lvl 7 rune)
PASSIVES
1. Blur(reduces melee dmg by 20%)
2. Galvanizing Ward(duration of armors increased to 120 seconds and recover 160 life per second)
3. Illusionist (whenever you take more then 15% of your life in a single hit mirror image CD is reset)
with Huge crit chance, insane life steal, giant damage meteors from you and your mirror images i think this build is not only viable, it could be extremely over powered. taking in any idea's you guys have, I've already changed it with input from some of you
Perks of this build:
-900% meteors with lvl 7 rune in between spectral blade spam
-50% regular hit life steal with lvl 7 rune in magic weapon
-145% critical dmg life steal with lvl 7 rune in spectral blade (stacks with magic weapon life steal) will allow for instant full health whenever you crit and energy armor + frost nova provides huge crit bonus for this to happen often
-energy shield + blur = huge damage reduction (energy shield increases DEFENSE by 20%, not armor, huge difference, defense decreases ALL dmg by ALOT)
-illusionist provides nearly spammable mirror image since you will be constantly taking dmg
-mirror images casting spells at 40% of the dmg you would do(70% with lvl 7 rune) (NOT casting spells for 40% of your wpn dmg, it says 40%(70%) of the dmg YOU would do with the spell they cast, huge difference. makes for 10x more damage) highly over powered skill, hopefully never nerfed
4. Storm Armor shocks ranged and melee attackers for 137% dmg (Crimson - Increases dmg to attackers to 223% dmg)
That is my only problem. By what I've been hearing about Inferno you'll be taking alot of damage so changing to Energy Armor with an Indigo Rune. Energy Armor increases your "DEFENSE", the stat that reduces ALL damage done to you.
Changed. i added crimson rune for 120% resistances which will definitely come in handy in inferno. the increasing arcane power rune is a complete waste because this build doesn't use any. the main thing helping you stay alive is the life leach. 30% of your dmg is converted to life and when you critically hit its 100%. and since crits are a lot higher you will insta full heal yourself with a crit. obviously just like in D2 the melee wizard will require awesome gear to be effective.
There are AP spenders for a melee build (Obsidian Arcane Orb for example), the issue is what spell to drop (as you pointed out). In this case I don't think that's your biggest issue though. I'd take Teleport over Mirror Image on a Melee Wizard. Especially from what I saw of clips from Blizzcon, getting surrounded looks pretty easy. Teleport's Obsidian rune adds a TON of survivability and it still works with Illusionist.
The build definitely needs 1 large Arcane spender, like meteor or hydra or blizzard. Something you can cast once or twice, and be done with your AP. 2 of the 3 abilities I listed not only do massive dmg, but also have defensive capabilities with the proper rune.
Personally, I would replace Diamond skin with one of the 2 above. 25 second CD is just too short, and the idea of the build is to take dmg, and then heal it back. No point in healing someone with a bubble on. I also agree with ArcaneWeapon, Obsidian Teleport would likely be far more useful than the images. Though I would take unstable anomaly over illusionist.
Also,
Shouldnt Frost Nova use an alabaster rune?
Deep Freeze = +50% crit if you Hit 5 or more mobs.
Since you are already going to be in melee, chances are there will be sufficient mobs, and your healing relies heavily on critical hits.
Energy Armor has 3 seemingly good melee wizard choices,
Force Armor - Prevents you from being hit too hard
Absorption - Allows you to cast even more Blizzards/Comets
Pinpoint Barrier - More crit, thus more dmg and more healing
Picking between Frozen Solid and Comet is also an interesting decision.

One is never hurt by being given additional choices, only by taking them away. A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!

Exact point I was going to make. The synergy between Alabaster Frost Nova and Alabaster Spectral Blades I think is a must for this build.
I also like Indigo Arcane Orb for a melee Wizard build, changing the spell to a PBAoE.
Depending on possible survivability issues, I would also strongly consider Arcane Dynamo for the third passive (Blur and Galvanizing Ward are a given, of course) since your primary "spamming" spell is a Signature spell, you'll be building up plenty of Flashes of Insight to give your Arcane Orb a big boost in damage (especially if you use it when your Frost Nova crit buff is up!).

yes those changes are great, definitely better then what i got haha. but id think you should choose meteor rather then arcane orb, 3x the damage with the crimson rune and will lay destruction to bosses/champs/big groups because doubtful you will be able to sit there and spectral blade them to death... and arcane orb can miss a lot if you watch the beta ppl use it. its a bigger energy dump. but you should be able to use meteor literally every couple seconds.
Well Indigo AO doesn't miss. It hits everything in 16 yards of your character (no aiming). Plus, taking into account the AP difference, you'd be able to cast 12 AOs for every 7 meteors (or 1.7 AO per Meteor). Obviously Meteor is still more powerful, but you'll be casting AOs much more frequently than Meteor. I guess I personally just prefer the mechanic of Indigo AO to Meteor, but to each his own.

Crimson meteor does 3x the DPS, and its %wpn dmg per AP is 1.5x better. The fact that it is more expensive is a good thing, because it allows you to use your signatures more.
It would take 28 seconds of regen to acquire enough AP to cast 12 AOs or 7 Meteors.
Right, but that's also assuming you're just standing still casting non-stop for 30 seconds against a single target. That kind of napkin math isn't really that applicable to real game situations. We also don't really know that much about Meteor (falling delay and damage radius would be two pertinent points here). That being said, I'm not arguing that Meteor isn't the better skill.
so i edited my build a bit. taking in your guys idea's and sticking with 1 of my own. the mirror image's. since this build is CONSTANTLY taking ALOT of damage since your a frail wizard, your relying heavily on your crits to heal for a ton, which this build has a lot of critting so thats great. problem solved. but WITH all that damage your "illusionist" passive will reset mirror image pretty much every couple seconds, so even if your images die within a couple hits (if there even being hit to begin with) you can recast them instantly. 2 images doing 40% of your dmg... (70% with lvl 7 rune) so that means they will cast Meteors (or frost nova or any other of your abilities) for 70% of the dmg you would do with it, but with both combined, its like almost ANOTHER 1 and a half of you casting spells at with 140% total effectiveness. WAYYY over powered. think about it. seriously. its potential is down right insane. and in a pinch ill be able to mirror image then run away as they distract the mobs so there still a good getaway plan as well.
i also didn't think about lvl 7 runes in magic weapon and spectral blade. this will provide 145% crit damage as life, and 45% of regular hits as life. which could potentially full heal you from almost dying, in fact with 145% of the dmg you just did as life and on a crit, that should DEFINITELY full heal you even if your near dead with a decent weapon, and with a huge chance to crit this will make you invincible unless your basically one shotted or get mauled by a ton of mobs before you can even attack. woah :o. unless any of this is nerfed this is gonna be the most OP melee build ever... even compared to any builds the barb or monk can make. the monk has a lot more survivability then the barb but no where near this 145% of the dmg you just did on a crit as life.. holy shit batman thats nuts.
Looking good now, I think it has exactly what a melee Wizard would need to be able to run through the higher difficulties.
Jay Wilson's melee Wizard from Blizzcon 2011 looked awesome
tyvm, i put a lot of time and thought into exactly what would be best with some help from the other people who commented
comparing to the other possible melee builds this could ironically be far more superior then any of them. with its unbelievable life stealing capabilities and huge damage from images and meteor. possibly...... dare i say it... one of the best builds in the game... :o!

Actually those two skills can never stack, at least not if the text on the skills is right. On Spectral Blade it says "Whenever the blades do critical damage...." and on Magic Weapon it says "Melee hits recover X% life". So I honestly don't see how the two skills could ever stack, unless Spectral Blade deals melee damage. In any case Spectral Blade won't have any effect on your normal attack. Also the life steal from Spectral Blade isn't very powerful, since the base damage is low (35% weapon damage) and your crit chance will also be around 35%. The only way to gain any real life from Spectral Blade is to constantly spam it, but the damage dealt is too low for that to be useful.
energy armor + frost nova provides huge crit bonus for this to happen often
Frost Nova yes, Energy Armor no. Even if it gave you +300% precision it would still be rather weak. +25% precision won't even be noticable, this will give you perhaps 1% extra crit chance, provided you have epic gear. With any kind of normal gear the bonus is for all practical purposes non-existant (for a lvl 60 char that is). Unless of course Blizz fixes the way precision works.
I have a very hard time seeing how this could be one of the best builds in the game, but I guess the only way would be to test it come release.
those two skills DO stack, its been 100% proven in the beta. spectral blade does melee dmg. search for the visual blog on a melee wizard on this website, you'll see. spectral blade also attacks 3 separate times at once for 35% wpn dmg (105% total to all enemies it hits) giving it 3 sepparate chances to crit (also proven in beta on that blog). so you life steal WILL stack and yes with this build you constantly spam spectral blade, mirror image, and when your able, meteor. insane life steal will keep you invincible.

You are misinterpreting what is said in the diary. There are two parts to magic weapon that we need to check if they stack with spectral blade. The first is the actual skill, which increases weapon damage. This is the one that was confirmed in the diary. The weapon damage increase happens before the % weapon damage in the skill, so that's why that works. The second part is the effect in the rune that applies effects to melee attacks. This part could not have been tested because runes are not in the beta.
Honestly, I don't know whether this is going to work or not. No one does except those who work for Blizzard. However, I have played a lot of MTG and I tend to look at these things in a very literal context and in terms of phases and triggers. Spectral Blade is not a melee hit, so it should not trigger an ability for melee hits. However, if Blizzard decides that Spectral Blade is a melee attack, then obviously that will change things. Until they put that into the description or say something about it, I'm going to assume that the abilities triggered by melee hits do not affect spectral blade. You are free to believe otherwise, but you should say that it's been 100% proven, because it has not.

It would take 28 seconds of regen to acquire enough AP to cast 12 AOs or 7 Meteors.
12 AOs + 16 Spectral Baldes = 5728% Wpn Dmg
v/s
7 Meteors + 21 Spectral Blades = 8729% Wpn dmg
Thus Any meteor, except alabaster, is a substantial increase in dmg output.
A QUADRILLION MAGIC FIND is worthless if you can't kill shit!
Just that, as the Blizz team is fond of saying, AO is perfectly viable.

On the skill calc, it says it increases the weapon physical dmg by 20%, not melee.
edit. I dont plan on playing wizard, at least not at start, the barb, DH and WD are all in front of him, but I am still curious about this.
