I'm sure you guys have heard that Go Daddy supports SOPA.
And, I'm sure you've also heard that there is currently a mass boycott of Go Daddy for this reason.
Diablo Fans currently uses Go Daddy as their registrar,
and I would like diablofans to switch to one of Go Daddy's competitors.
SOPA threatens the internet as we know it, that includes diablofans. It is counter-productive for diablo fans to support Go Daddy.
Is there any way to convince diablofans to switch?
The only reason Go Daddy stopped supporting SOPA is because they were losing customers.
It would be naive to assume that they've internally stopped supporting SOPA.
Fact of the matter is, they've spent months supporting this bill on capital hill.
They clearly had an ulterior motive to put out that press release.
Even if they're being genuine (which they're probably not), we should use this opportunity to send a message to lawmakers.
Besides, It's never too late for diablofans to set an example.
Dude Godaddy wrote part of the legislation, they wrote some of the SOPA act. They can't withdraw from it, they created it ffs.
Ah yes. A typical baseless accusation.
What I find most humorous about these folks calling for a boycott of companies that support SOPA, is they only do it when it doesn't inconvenience them. http://articles.busi...-publishers-bmi
What do we see on that list? It includes nearly every major television channel. Do you use any kind of credit or debit card? Visa and Mastercard are on there. Do you like watching NFL or MLB? Both are on there. How about watching movies, listening to music or reading books? Chances are high that you are buying media from a company that supports SOPA. Drive a Ford vehicle? Yup, supports SOPA? Yet people aren't calling for a boycott on these companies. Why? Because it would be an inconvenience. Moving domains is easy. Giving up tv, movies, books, sports, etc is apparently quite a bit harder.
I don't like SOPA at all. I also don't think it's wrong to take a stand against something you disagree with. In fact I applaud it if it's done in the right way. Shoot, GoDaddy isn't even one of the main players of the bill. It's quite funny to see a few people up in arms over GoDaddy, yet they continue doing business with one or several other companies on there who ARE the primary players.
GoDaddy is an internet-specific company who is helping write the legislation that ends internet freedom. There's nothing 'baseless' in the accusation, they literally said in their press release that they were helping to write it.
“Fighting online piracy is of the utmost importance, which is why Go Daddy has been working to help craft revisions to this legislation — but we can clearly do better,” Adelman said in a release.
A lot of us don't watch TV, either. In some cases, SOPA would end our ability to avoid our television sets. Books are a dying medium due entirely to the Internet and e-readers. There's a reason Borders had to close shop.
Some things are entirely impossible to boycott (See: Credit cards, transportation) so yes. I guess it's hypocritcal of me to use a visa bank card to pay my bills and not want my internet access censored and destroyed.
...Yet people aren't calling for a boycott on these companies. Why? Because it would be an inconvenience. Moving domains is easy. Giving up tv, movies, books, sports, etc is apparently quite a bit harder...
There are people out there who have called for boycotts on buying new forms of media and other things you listed. It's not the majority movement but there are people out there doing it.
The cool thing is that it doesn't need to be done for long to send the message to those companies and Washington.
And BTW, there is no "right way" for SOPA or anything remotely like it to be done even If you're talking about stopping piracy. That's a whole other story though.
When the time comes for me to renew my domains and website, I'll be transferring away from GoDaddy. I don't care how many times they change their mind on SOPA, goodbye.

FYI: Wikipedia pulls away from Go Daddy: http://twitter.com/#...287579642740736
Day[9], a prominant member of the Starcraft community just with drew from GoDaddy: https://twitter.com/#!/day9tv/status/150323803526930432
TL;DR: Press release bullshit. Diablofans should still switch. Yay wikipedia!
