In a recent response from Bashiok about health globes and how they will work with harder monsters. Bashiok replied that globes will have a chance to drop after hitting these monsters as oppose to only dropping after killing the monster like most normal enemies. For conversation and opinions on this idea, you can visit this thread started by Akuma_Gin.
Bashiok went on to explain just what monsters this included. The Diablo III team is currently using certain terms and categories to help decide which monsters get what treatment.
Official Blizzard Quote:
As far as I know it right now the terms we're using and what they mean:
Champions - small packs of tougher mobs that share affixes, increased health, damage, harder, etc.
Rares - affix-laden enemy, much tougher, comes with a group of minions that inherit their affixes and bonuses
Uniques - Unique boss monsters. Unique name/art/skills/lairs and are usually a part of the story/goal of a quest, if not the actual end-boss of an act. The Skeleton King and the Siegebreaker would both be uniques
So, following very closely to Diablo II's rankings for enemies, Diablo III will have many varied encounters with the monsters that are inhabiting Sanctuary. We all remember the random group of champions that would rush up to our hero ,especially those ghostly physical immune while playing a Barbarian. Rares also added a fun change of pace with their randomly selected attributes that would make them especially tough to beat compared to their normal counterparts. Uniques added perhaps the biggest change in combat other than bosses. Memorable foes like Radament, Blood Raven, and The Ancients stopped us from our usually thoughtless hacking and forced us to think and strategize on how to kill these monsters.
With Diablo III, we have seen a few of these unique monsters that they have planned. The Siegebreaker Assault Beast and the return of the Skeleton King Leoric were both show cased as the finale of the demos that were playable. Impressive battles that rivaled, if not, were better than the boss fights of Diablo II. Unique death mechanics of the Siegebreaker biting of the head of the Barbarian and throwing his lifeless corpse to the ground is an image many of us get excited about. The dynamic lair of the Skeleton King exemplified just how much more interesting these battles will be as oppose to the boring room when fighting Duriel. These impressive battels show just how much better Diablo III will be then the already legendary Diablo II. Even the epic battle of the Barbarian against the Thousand Pounder is only considered to be a rare monster.
As Bashiok mentioned in his post, regular monsters have a chance of dropping a small health globe after killing them. Champions will have a chance of dropping a bigger health globe once while they are alive and then a chance after killing them. Rares, like the Thousand Pounder have a chance of dropping even bigger health globes every quarter of their life and once again upon killing them. Unique monsters may act the same as rares but the plan is to have them have other ways and chances for the player to refill their HP.
Official Blizzard Quote:
Uniques/Bosses... ? Maybe! But their health replenishing mechanics (among other things) have a better chance of being a bit more creative since their lairs are specifically designed for them.
One example of how this will work is the minions of King Leoric that attack you at the same time as fighting himself. Forcing players to fight off these smaller monsters to get health globes is one way of adding chances and tactics to the harder fights. Destructible environments are sure to play a role as well as additional sources for much needed life. Who knows what other imaginable uniques and interesting lairs the development team will create to challenge us and memorable battles. Perhaps monster concepts like these will be found in the game. Monsters that are more then just higher HP and defense and cause us to think on how we are going to defeat them. Lairs much more interesting and interactive will allow us to move around and focus on more than just the one monster we are fighting.
Perhaps the most interesting thing we can take and think about from all of this information is the idea of what the actual boss fights will be like. While we don't know exactly who these bosses are, we can only presume that these battles are going to be even more epic than the unique battles. Just how amazing they are is up to anybody's speculation.

If you want to arrange it
This world you can change it
If we could somehow make this
Christmas thing last
By helping a neighbor
Or even a stranger
And to know who needs help
You need only just ask
Would make sense if they would drop health globes at every 1/4s of health or even 1/8s of health depending on the enemy.
But we already know that the they will make it work whatever method they use in the end.
Memorable foes like Radament, Blood Raven, and The Ancients stopped us from our usually thoughtless hacking and forced us to think and strategize on how to kill these monsters.
No, they didn't. I just kept on hackin, and they died. The ones that got me to think for a second were...umm...cows... Should I hack, or should I run?
I believe that means it should be possible toget 0 globes, which is a thing I don't like about the system. A guaranteed drop after X kill or on Y event would be more reliable.
I agree. I know they're designing this for softcore and will figure it out for hardcore later, but still this makes me worry. It would be really retarded if you lost your character just because no globes spawned for 5 minutes in a row.
There will still be potions, and although they have a cooldown, they can still be used as a last resort if too few health globes drop, or if you take way more damage than what health globes can support.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
Rares, like the Thousand Pounder have a chance of dropping even bigger health globes every quarter of their life and once again upon killing them.
sorry but can I get a source for this?
about the thousand pounder being a rare monster? Bashiok mentioned two unique monsters. He did not say thousand pounder. When asked further about thousand pounder, he eluded to the fact that the thousand pounder could be fought against more than once or that his model and lair were not unique enough to be a unique.

Thousand Pounder? Maybe. I guess it just depends on what the ultimate use is for the models and such. Siege breaker will probably be unique. It's too big to have a ton of them spawning all over the place.

You can't say that the ancients was just standing there and spamming potions. You had to plan out who you were going to attack first and who to avoid. With radament, you had to balance out fighting off the other skeletons and going after him.

Q2. How does Manaorb or Drink in Diablo 3 taste like?
Q3. How much Rage is healthy for you in Diablo 3 Barbarian Situation?
Q4. LoL?
I will not talk much about the employee horbs, but I'm a little upset with the major elements of world of warcraft diablo 3 inside. colldown with potions, rage, parts of the scenarios, inventory, and many other factors that surely the idea of blizz and focus on the pvp to generate monthly guaranteed with advantages in battle net. sincerely wish to follow only the path of diablo 2 with new modifications bazii only in the world of diablo. so it would be interesting to have achievements to get rare items go into other things. in a bit vain advertise horses-horse, goat, etc.. for diablo 3 or worse you will have to pay to train q spells and expect to make a raid stances. lol

Q4. LoL?
A1. Healthorb is obviously spaghetti so have you had spaghetti
A2. Manaorb is obviously a blue kool-aid so if you have had it then you know
A3. Well you don't want to get too pissed off that can really affect the barbs health so maybe 3/4
A4. Did you think about it? LoL?
I hope this helped you all with this important information this is the biggest thing we have seen for diablo 3 so far
nope. about him dropping a health orb every quarter of his life

Love Spaghetti and blue koolishing aids. Ooooh Yeeeaah!
Gonna write it down! I think too much! Thank you!
Maybe if you strategized more you wouldn't need to just spam potions
Would take longer to make 'strategies' to avoid the use of potions. And if you count running away from them while hitting them with a blizzard or something, that doesn't count as a 'strategy', because then running in and standing there using potions would also count as a 'strategy'.
You can't say that the ancients was just standing there and spamming potions. You had to plan out who you were going to attack first and who to avoid. With radament, you had to balance out fighting off the other skeletons and going after him.
Actually, I can, cuz I did, stand there, and use potions, while they died by my wrath. With Radament, I just owned his oversized ass, then the other skellies near to him died. That's the most effective way of killing the skellies...
My only hope for d3 is that we get a decent opportunity to actualy formulate strategies, better then spaming potions, or 'running and gunning'...
I agree with you. I really hope that uniques and bosses are more than just higher hp and defense with one or two skills. I have faith that they will though just from watching the siegebreaker video. If that giant beast is only a unique, I can't even imagine what they have planned for bosses. I also think the way they keep mentioning the monster's lair that they are definitely planning and creating much more interesting fights for Diablo 3.

I thought the unique monsters WERE the bosses... Are they or are they just like "half-bosses"?

Life is only another stage of death, in fearing death you can not live life to the fullest. Some of the world's greatest feats were accomplished by people not smart enough to know they were impossible.
