A Battle.net forum member posted a question about how death is handled in Diablo 3 in regards to checkpoints. Bashiok was good enough to respond to help clear some things up:
"We had a checkpoint system in the BlizzCon demo we showed, where you would die and pop back up at the last checkpoint you came across. Some of that was for the convenience of the demo, but we do like the checkpoint system and intend to carry that forward in the same or similar form. We're not looking toward corpse retrieval currently.
Any death system we do have needs to allow players to get back into the action quickly, but not be so meaningless that you're just flinging your corpse against a wall of monsters over and over until you finally get through."
He then responded to some follow-up questions regarding how far apart checkpoints will be:
"That all comes down to balancing, and probably the specific Act/dungeon itself. No way to know right now."
Having played the demo, I definitely liked the checkpoint system they had in place at the time. It didn't seem too unfair, but it also didn't plop you right back where you were. Dying definitely was something you wanted to avoid if at all possible. Just like in real life How about you guys? What do you think of the checkpoint system they had in place for the demo?
Titan Quest had this, and it was a bless (no need to retrieve body). But it didn't mean death was just a minor setback, because the checkpoint was almost always at the entrance of the dungeon/level/area, and the tougher monsters/heavier mobs were always near the end, so dying meant long walks to get into the fight again.
Anyway, it was like Diablo 2, but without needing to run around like a chicken in order to get the body. It's good to see Diablo learning stuff from it's best clone.
Sorry, this is a bit of topic but when Makenshi compared the checkpoint system in the BlizzCon Demo to Titan Quest I remembered that I wondered how the damage dealt by a weapon/spell was displayed in Diablo 3. In Diablo II you had to be a brainiac if you wanted to know which weapon dealt most damage (with different attack speeds or castrate ...). Didn't Titans quest have a very nice system displaying average dmg/s ? It made gaming a lot easier. Does anyone know if average dmg/s will be displayed in D3?
It will be according to the weapons stats shown in the demo.

I didn't like the previous system that was used in Diablo II. It was really annoying, especially when versing Nihlathak and you die on top of 5 corpses that he hasn't blown up yet.
You will still know the minimum and maximum damage as well as the intervals, of course - the DPS display doesn't conceal information, it gives you more information in plain sight without having to do the calculations yourself. Besides, all those modifiers you named do not change a weapon's DPS either way so you don't have a point. DPS is physical damage per second. Everything else that goes on top of that are variable elemental bonuses, passive bonuses from other gear, etc. D2 system merely gave you loose descriptions of a weapons speed and min/max damage. There was no way to know the overall effectiveness your weapon has in say, a bossfight, unless you test it yourself with a stopwatch.
More information, combat logs, things like that. More depth to the game.
Man, this is giving me an idea. They should have like special death animations for Hardcore mode. Like, the monster totally pwns your body, then turns his head to the screen and points and laughs at you.
Maybe even like no death animation in Hardcore is ever going to be one you can also find in softcore, but all of them are more brutal, hilarious, and/or cooler.
Someone should mention this to Bashiok.
Lol if they did that I: would just make a char and die by every boss to see what they did

i really REALLY dislike the checkpoint system... might as well make urself invincible as it basically gives you unlimited retries. i prefer having the aspect of having to go pick up your body as a good deterrent not to die.

It gave such a bias to sorceress's though, and would continue to give bias to any character that relies on their weapons and armour (i.e. barbarian)

How does the system in D2 not give you unlimited retries? Sure, the game apparently has problems handling more than 16 bodies in game at any one time, but that's a system limit, not a conscious design decision.
Besides, if you have to run from a checkpoint, it could be very much mroe irritating that just popping through the TP you opened after reaching Baal's Throneroom.
PlugY for Diablo II allows you to reset skills and stats, transfer items between characters in singleplayer, obtain all ladder runewords and do all Uberquests while offline. It is the only way to do all of the above. Please use it.
Supporting big shoulderpads and flashy armor since 2004.
How low on health and mana you restart after death?
Does the penalty increase after several deaths?
Thanks.
well i didnt play the demo at blizzcon. (in minneapolis) if i was there. i dont think i would payed attention to those. but still those are good questions. also. since the game is in early development if someone who does post those statistics, it will probably be subject to change in the near future probably.

As long as I don't die.
