For some time since the announcement of patch 1.13 for Diablo II in late April, we have heard scant nothing of progress and have seldom had an update. Now Bashiok, a Blizzard representative on their Battle.net online board, has replied to the inquiry of a poster about the progress of the patch:
Quote from "Bashiok" »
Work on the patch was put on hold for a while due to higher priority issues, but it commences, and it is nearing.
The reply is short and to the point, which is more than we can say of many of Blizzard's revelations. Apparently, the patch had been put on hold in light of more pressing matters, but now they're back in business and its release is imminent.
I, myself, am somewhat dissappointed in their lack of an announcement when they suspended work on it, something many had suspected in Diablo-based forums around the internet. However, now that we have a definite confirmation of its progress, something that would have been nice a month or two ago, I can say that some of that is relieved.
Being one of the very few responses from Bashiok of late, this reply may be something of consequence. Can we be expecting the patch before the month of June is out? Many ladder resets and a few patches have been released in the month of June, so this only continues to add to the speculation.
Credit goes out to pvp_fire for PMing me about this little tidbit. Hand the man a rep point if you have a moment
EDIT~
Some speculation about the "higher priority" that has been going around is that they just released their 1.23b beta Warcraft III patch yesterday on their servers. This may, in fact, be what Bashiok had been alluding to.
Haha, I would have beat you to it if I could have made a thread :D, but I did reply to the other one
However, this announcement is quite a disappointment...how hard would it have been to say the patch has been delayed due to other circumstances beyond our control back in May? And his response is classic, "not really" and "it is nearing"...sometime in the future I suppose....
Well, everyone grab a drink and sit back until July when we will get the next update about the patch progress...

I really wonder what is in this patch that is taking so long to be put out, even if they just held it off for a month. Unless they just started developing the patch recently and all that's in it is some bug fixes and a ladder reset.
(Would LOVE for the "failed to join game" bug fixed)
We try to give everyone at least a two week notice before a ladder reset. When it became apparent that the patch could potentially launch in two weeks, we put up an announcement just in case.
Now, even though no promises were given it's going to create some hope that it will be out, but we can only do so much to balance between expectation and information that's necessary for the community to have.
Blizzard would have never pulled a stunt like this one or many other offensive things 10 years ago. But because of wow and all the success they think their stuff don't stink. Look I'll play the patch and diablo iii. But as a company I've lost all respect for them. After all is us fans that keep the company going we shouldn't be treated like this. This Bashiok character needs to start phrasing things a little better and throwing a couple of "I'm sorries" would not hurt either.

Guys, i must really know this: Why on earth would you still be playing diablo 2? I can't get my head around it.
Sure it was a helluva fun game back then. Hell, that game made me reapeat a year in High school.
But now, every time i fire it up i get this been there done that feeling, i know like every friggin' rock or grain of sand in that game.
What's still so fun that people are so intrested in it that they keep pestering Blizzard for new patches.
Dont you guys think that the dudes at Blizz HQ can better spend their time making D3 even more awesome?
Umm because Diablo1 and 2 are totally awesome!!! And theres not alot of games that can compete with it!

The Diablo III team is separate from the legacy team, which works on patching and maintaining their older games. So no, if they were not working on Diablo II, work on Diablo III would not be any better since they're different teams.
I think one of the main reasons that I keep coming back to it is simply because it was a large part of my childhood. It's a bit of a part of whom I am and what I want to become. No, I don't mean I want to become a Necromancer What I mean is, it has inspired different things in me- an interest in web technologies, writing, being creative, helping people who need it, among many other things.
It's much the same as if I had been some kid that grew up playing baseball. Baseball never gets any different- it's always the same game, same rules- but if you grew up on it, it's as integral to you as any body part. It's what you enjoy doing. It's what inspires you in some ways, even if at first they are not self-evident.

Yes, it's a game. But it was much more than that.
