I'm embarrassed to say that I cannot unsee what I have seen in the Monk resource artwork. Does anyone else think that the Spirit resource artwork makes it look quite a bit like a man's "vital essence?"

Sorry. When you see something that looks like a white liquid* Obviously it's more along the lines of a form of energy, ki, or aura, but since we can't really visualize that, a swirling white liquid is the best next choice. You know what he was talking about when he said a man's "vital essence," so don't quote me and go "wait, what?!"

No, but if you're happy that whenever you see a white liquid you imagine a "man's essence," then I'm happy too.
Not for all white liquids, but in this case, I can't unsee it! I know I have the mind of a 14 year old; I'm just glad that the image isn't ruined for everyone out there.
I think it's a perfect fit. Monks are holy, white is usually associated with holiness. Kinda seems like the amount of holy aura that the monk has. The more he uses that holy aura the less he has, et cetera.
Edit: On second/third look, it looks like a video of a moon over time during a cloudy night.

See that would be an awesome effect for like a werewolf class or something. Start with a clouds, and the full moon is slowly revealed as you gain more... moonlight? I dunno. This monk art however, I'm not feeling "holy power" at all. Even if I put the image out of my mind, all I get from the art is a sort of swirl of white. When I think of holy, I think of holy light, and this looks... dull. It's not bright at all.
Some quotes from a blueposter (Zaryhm) on this matter:
"White and black, for example, would be bad. One purpose of the color scheme is to ensure it's very readable when your focus is on the game world and not the UI. Given the dark vibe of Sanctuary and the way the UI fits in with that feel, black simply wouldn't pop out at all. It'd be much more difficult to track your Hatred (which is the resource you'll be managing most frequently) peripherally when background colors are so frequently on the darker end of the color spectrum. Just the same, the suggestion of white for Discipline seems only to stand in contrast to black which, again, just wouldn't work."
"TLDR:
- The current colors were chosen so you can easily distinguish them while focusing on the game world."
Hopefully that helps.

Well, I can't say it is, because it's just a matter of opinion on our end. They said they put a lot of work into choosing the right colors/themes, and I have no reason to think they're lying. I guess we can't have everything we want. It honestly doesn't affect me, because, at least at this moment, the monk is my least favorite character. Hopefully the color of their resource doesn't affect your overall playstyle and preference.

If anything, the desire to make crude jokes while playing such as "I've filled the cup!" will make me want to play the monk even more. I mean, I suppose it all makes sense; when the monk's spirit is full, he's more... potent. These puns are going to just get worse and worse; I can tell.
Looks more like sand to me.
Me personally... I'd get that checked out...
I was hoping it would be like a gold version of the wizard's arcane power orb.
Wait... WHAT???
