In the end to have a succesful series diablo baal mephisto and the other evils, including azmodan and belial this time must come back. the question is, are we ever let in on the purpose of smashing the soul stones, according to horodric lore the purpose of the stones is to hold the souls so they cannot manafest a physical form, this manafestation is born from human terror hatred and destruction respectivly. i dont recall if we are ever told why the stones require being destroyed, when baals was broken all it did was set him free in the battle with tal rasha and the horodrim. is it therefore probly acceptable that all evils return to hell where they are able to overcome or befriend the ruling minor evils who have depleted forces and then we have a full scale war again, no worldstone means they can come to the mortal plane, as to why......hmmm maybe they want to lure angels out of heaven, something else that could be introduced is a bit hard to create, we have leaders of hell but no leaders of heaven, tyrael is only an arch angel so there must be a form of "god" equal to the "devils" of hell.

If the pigeon had a face shall the man walk a wolf?
i dont recall if we are ever told why the stones require being destroyed,
the prime evils once existed in the world of sanctuary in the physical forms after being banished their by Belial and azmodan, when they were captured their essence was trapped with in to soulstones and sealed away. baal due to his destructive nautre broke his, thus Tal Rasha was required to make up for the broken piece. this "storing of essences" proved ill fated, all all three brothers were able to escape the bounds of the stones. and once again take physical forms and walk the earth.
smashing the stones at hellforge after defeating them seems to trap the essence of the prime evils in the abyss from whence they came.
there doesnt appear to be any supreme single enity for either Heaven or Hell. the the prime evils are the most powerful, but with them now being trapped in the abyss, Belial and Azmodan are left to fight over who should rule hell in their place.
as for Heaven, we are told of several of the choirs of angels, Angels, Arch Angels and the Seraphim spefically. Seraphim are the highest choir of angels, yet there is no mention of a leader, so its possible that all the members of the seraphim lead in a joint effort type thing with no one having power over the other, just those below them.

The whole soulstone business is pretty much guesswork. We are only told what is supposed to happen, but not whether it is actually true or not. The destruction of the Worldstone would at first indicate that the way for hell would indeed be open, but aparetly Tyrae diasgreed.
when baals was broken all it did was set him free in the battle with tal rasha and the horodrim.
The stones can only be destroyed in the Hellforge, and I suspect that if they are destroyed while the Prime is still alive, it would only weaken him. Thus Baal keps his stone close to himself so that it isn't put in any danger.

There's been a lot of debate on the nature of the soulstones. I did find it surprising that according to Diablo lore, the stones could even be damaged in the world of Sanctuary. Cause it was difficult to comprehend why then it would have to be destroyed at Hellforge respectively. But then I later figured it was so if you're going to unleash a soul, there you can unleash it into the abyss.

Yes, well he managed to damage it during the battle when they were trying to imprison him. I'm certain the other prime evils attempted the same thing.
But it's interesting to wonder how they took physical form before the the stones were created. Cause as soon as they were, and the prime evils were trapped in them, after that they couldn't manifest physically without a host body. Diablo had Prince Albrecht, Baal had Tal Rasha (I wonder what Baal looked like before Tal Rasha became his host, and Mephisto had that hight priest of the Zakarum, I think his name was Quel-Hagan(?).
I actually imagine that the Prime Evils were less powerful in the mortal world of Sanctuary by themselves than they would become later with the soulstone and host body. As if being banished to Sanctuary was a translation of sorts, and you always lose something during the translation. But what I never understood was if Izual told the Prime Evils how to corrupt the Soulstones and take advantage of them, why would Baal work to destroy his? I mean, if it was really all part of the master plan to use them later on, what was he thinking? Perhaps then, Elfen, it was ike you said. It was just Baal's destructive nature.

they existed for sometime after their banishment to sanctuary before being captured. Diablo kept eluding the Horadrim, for sveral years from what i can gather.
It seems once trapped in the soulstones they need a host, its almost like the soulstones placed a form of "curse" on them, because it seems they are either in one of two states, in the soulstone, or a host body. they never become their full selves, again until their soulstones are smashed and they are trapped in the abyss.
Que'Hagen is a title isnt it, but you are right it is the Highestpreist of the zakarum.

when they captured baal he broke his soulstone, that is why Tal Rasha was needed to replace the broken part.
i dont recall any of the prime evils wanting to break them.
in LOD Baal wears what is left of his soulstone around his neck, but he is techincally a living soulstone (kinda like of Alphonse in FMA is a living philospher's stone), as Tal Rasha was used to like i said replace the broken part, and Baal's host body is Tal Rasha.

The Soulstones are a form of prison. But yes, the exact reason for why they wanted to be imprisoned in them is rather unlcear.
But they could manifest physically. Diablo did, while in possession of his soul stone in the mortal world. I'd say that he didn't do it before because it doesn't make much sense to walk around like a huge red deomon in broad daylight, makes you a lot easier to find.

Could have been to be believable, if he woud just have given up the Horadrimm would have been rather suspicious I think. And we don't actually know how the process of imprisonment works, it could have been an accident on Baal's behalf.

It makes sense to have diablo 3 have to fight all 3 prime evils and all 4 lesser evils, its just that we've already killed 5 of the 7 already, one of them twice, and it starts to get a bit repetitive when you end up killing the same enemy and bringing him back 20 times, especially when it starts to feel like there's no point in doing what you're doing
