The City was a great level. I thought it was weird though that when you go back there and this time the Authority is swarming the place, you really think to yourself, cool man, I guess I'll be fighting an Authority boss before this is all over. And then....nothing. And the game just disappointed me in this way over and over again for the rest of the time. I couldn't believe how anticlimactic everything was.
One person on Giantbomb remarked that that's just how a lot of games these days are designed. They are over ambitious and do all the cool stuff in the beginning of the game, then realize they have deadlines and start rushing through the rest of the game's development. You can seriously feel that in Rage.
Yeah I read from a lot of other players that they never used their BFG ammo either. You ever get a feeling of dread when you sense a game is about to end and you're just thinking, "No...it can't end here. Not like this...." I really don't know why my expectations were so high for this game. When I first say anything about Rage I thought, oh great, another post-apocalyptic game with added wit. But as I saw the development progress, I actually became quite interested in it. And I thought no matter how risky the RPG elements were in the game, well at least id knew how to make a first rate FPS. But my god did things get boring after the first half of the game. All I could think about was Doom 3. How the intensity and trepidation gradually increased after each level and how there were these amazing boss fights that really proved to you, yes, the game was getting harder.
It just felt like a 30 dollar game. Not 60 dollars. And I know games are a gamble sometimes, especially if you're buying. But I just couldn't believe I'd dropped 60 bucks to play what turned out to be the biggest disappointment for me in a long time. Maybe Rage should've just been a straightforward FPS. I mean, Halo: Reach did pretty well didn't it? Even the latest Wolfenstein game had alright sells and it had only the most minimal customization options regarding your weapons and some of your powers but besides that was also a pretty straightforward shooter. I don't know.
On another note, aren't the fists and the ammo a reward for pre-orders only? I remember reading a review in which the editor was complaining about how those make the game trivial.
The pre order bonuses don't really make a difference. Soon into the game you just spam grenades and special ammo anyway.
They're not that bad since your health regenerates. But it still wasn't an interesting melee option like the chainsaw in Doom 3. See, melee is supposed to be a high risk high reward kind of attack. The health regen and defib though made no combat tactic in Rage that interesting. There was simply a lot of room to be sloppy. The preorder also came with the double barrel shotgun, but once I made the exploding shells I preferred the single barrel.
