Blizzard sues over Diablo nameposted 6:54pm EST Fri Mar 02 2001NEWS
Blizzard Entertainment, manufacturer of the popular Diablo and Diablo II games, is suing New Line over that company's choice to title an in-production film "Diablo." Blizzard accuses New Line of trying to capitalize on the title of its game series that has sold over 5.6 million copies and brought in revenues of $103 million. Blizzard plans to eventually create a series of Diablo films. The first, entitled simply "Diablo," was filed for trademark in April 1996, and the second, "Diablo II: Salvation," was filed in February 1997. Both trademarks were approved in July 2000. New Line filed to oppose Blizzard's Diablo movie trademark. I don't think it would be too hard for New Line to pick a new snazzy name for its film that doesn't mess up Blizzard's long-held plans for a Diablo movie series. That's assuming that Vin Diesel isn't playing a character called "Diablo" in the action film. I did a search on DiabloMovie.com and someone in Australia has been parking the domain since September 30, 2000. I don't think that will last too long.
i hope its a sign... but the last time a notable company had any diablo news posted we was let down... thats the only thing thats holding me back from jumping up and down right now, that and my soar leg

If you ever meet a hafling and a hungry dragon you dont have to outrun the dragon, you only have to outrun the hafling.
Considering Blizzards new found friendship with Legendary Pictures, and the fact that they are producing a WoW movie... We have every reason to believe that Blizzard would be interested in a Diablo movie, and that Legendary would be the one to produce it. Also considering the fact that Blizzard has sued over "Diablo" film titles in the past, and won... Unless this was just a freak typo from a webmaster (just about impossible) we can be 99.99% sure that any Diablo titled movie that Legendary produces, is indeed based on Blizzard's game. So my guess is this was either a. Miscommunication that lead to Legendary adding a movie in production, to their 'in production' list accidentally before its officially announced, and then corrected it. Or b. Blizzard jokingly asked them to put it up and then take it down, just to add to their hype and see if anyone would pick up on it. From what I’ve seen, Blizzard seems to like hidden messages/hints/anything to add to their marketing brilliance… so I wouldn’t be surprised if this was intentional. My guess is we wont hear a single word about this until August, at which point we'll either learn that this is that 3rd project, or our hopes will be confirmed about Diablo III, and then they'll stun everyone by announcing an accompanied film. And I couldn’t see them just announcing a film… So we’ll probly get both.
Very odd. Diablo was listed on their homepage earlier today (wish I had a screenshot of it) and World of Warcraft was nowhere to be found. Now it's the opposite.
last time i was there, both Diablo and WOW were present. yeh i wish i got a screenshot. damn should have thought of that.
this is all there is on Legendary Pictures website that mentions diablo

Legendary Pictures and Blizzard Entertanment ® to Produce Live-Action Warcraft® Movie
Fantasy game franchise played by millions worldwide to become major motion picture
IRVINE, Calif. -- May 9, 2006 -- Blizzard Entertainment, Inc. and Legendary Pictures today announced that they have entered into an agreement to develop a live-action film based on Blizzard Entertainment®'s award-winning Warcraft® universe. Based on the terms of the agreement, Legendary Pictures has acquired the movie rights for the best-selling game universe, and both companies are now focused on translating the high-quality Warcraft entertainment experience to the big screen.
"We searched for a very long time to find the right studio for developing a movie based on one of our game universes," said Paul Sams, chief operating officer of Blizzard Entertainment. "Many companies approached us in the past, but it wasn't until we met with Legendary Pictures that we felt we'd found the perfect partner. They clearly share our high standards for creative development, and because they understand the vision that we've always strived for with our Warcraft games, we feel there isn't a better studio out there for bringing the Warcraft story to film."
"One of our goals at Legendary Pictures has been to bring heroic stories to life in groundbreaking ways, and it's inspiring to work with a company such as Blizzard that takes that approach with each of its products," stated Legendary Pictures Chairman and CEO Thomas Tull. "The Warcraft Universe is possessed of such a rich mythology and, as such, serves as an ideal platform as we go about translating that universe into what we intend to be a major event film"
Blizzard's Warcraft games have developed a loyal following since the series debuted in 1994. Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness™, released in 1995, won multiple Game of the Year awards and is still considered one of the best games ever made, and Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos? broke multiple sales records when it launched in 2002. World of Warcraft®, Blizzard's latest entry in the critically acclaimed franchise, has quickly become the one of the world's most popular online games, with more than 6 million paying customers worldwide.
"From our first Warcraft game to our latest novels, our intention has always been to develop a rich fantasy universe that could support stories and products in many forms," stated Chris Metzen, Blizzard Entertainment's vice president of creative development. "In addition to being a truly rewarding experience for us, the creation of this motion picture also feels like a natural next step for the Warcraft universe."
"It's not always the case that interactive game properties lend themselves to proper adaptation to film," said Jon Jashni, Legendary Pictures' chief creative officer. "We are intending to approach this as we would the adaptation of a best-selling novel: respect the essence of all that it is but also build upon that fertile base while translating it into a new medium."
Further details about the upcoming Warcraft movie, including director, cast, and targeted release date, will be revealed in the months ahead. About Legendary Pictures
Legendary Pictures formed a partnership with Warner Bros. Pictures in 2005 to co-produce and co-finance at least 25 pictures during an initial 5-year term, which includes a first-look distribution arrangement. The company operates from the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank, California. Legendary Pictures' first film was Batman Begins, directed by Chris Nolan. Future releases include Superman Returns, directed by Bryan Singer, M. Night Shyamalan's Lady in the Water, and Roland Emmerich's 10,000 B.C. About Blizzard Entertainment, Inc.

I'm compelled to agree with this idea. It seems like a Blizzardy type thing to do.
The news post here on Diablo3.com now says "they're doing a World of Warcraft movie instead"
Thats not entirely true... I cant comment on what the Legendary website said befor, but some here are saying it said both, which is most likely the case, due to the fact that a WoW movie is not news. So their website most likely listed it in development long befor Diablo was listed.
As the Elfen's post shows, there are news articles in Legendary's website over a year old announcing a WoW movie.
So to refer to it as being "instead" of Diablo, is misleading.

"Blizzard fansite Blizzplanet speculates that a press release announcing the movie will be issued within a matter of days. Furthermore, the fansite conjectures that a new Diablo game may be announced this August at BlizzCon 2007, which will certainly rally interest in series without a new game release since 2001."
With all the fuss about this all of a sudden. Blizzard is taking it up the ass right now from everyone about it. (Its odd that the Legendary would come out before they did) They will come out and say just enough, Who knows what.
Anyone know if G4TV Is going to cover Blizzcon, I mean now with WOW being what it is today? I can't see them not covering it live.
Yeah.. I think it would have been better if Blizzard announced it before LP put it on their website, for hype reaons... but the way it turned out.. it helps the hype =P
i dont know if blizz announces the movie we talk about it for a bit say we hope its good but focus on the fact that a game should be announced soon. just the fact that blizzard is silent right now is provoking us to speculate wildly as to what this could mean. if this was intentional...bravo blizzard you have done well.
i wouldnt be suprised, they havent reset ladder in a few years, and they continue to ignore diablo 2.
the resets or the ladder happens when all ladder realms have at least 1 at 99. for example:
99 barbarian on softcore
99 sorc on softcore
and so on, but also:
99 barb on Hardcore
and so on
all slots need to have at least one lvl 99 character in each category. hopefully HC can finish their quota soon, they still need to lvl a couple characters.
that is one of my favorite thoughts but they have 800 people working on games... 200 on WoW that lets 600 im assuming 200 for SC2 production, about 100 to maintain sc1 d2 and wcIII patches and work on some minor stuff, by my best estimates that would let ~300 people but they have 1-3 projects... wait a tick when they said that they used the word project, do they always say that?? because they might not have 1-3 games, they have a WoW movie, wouldnt that be a project, and a diablo movie... well maby and then d3?? ahh weird thought but they have atleast 300 people sitting around working on unknown stuff

yea, and it might have something to do with the 2.0 thing their talking about. as soon as that new version of whatever it is their doing, whether it be reformatting the website or something else, comes out, we will be able to investigate further about what exactly it is they are planning.
