While there is already a post somewhat concerning it, I wanted to point out the PS3 exclusive Demon's Souls.
An American port is scheduled early October (as well as a limited edition) but the Chinese and Korean versions (both include full English spoken dialogue/text) have been available for import for some time.
Anyway, it has been the game I've been occupying myself with while I wait for the new Diablo 2 patch and, ultimately, Diablo 3.
When my imported copy came in, I was pleasantly surprised at how it reminded me of the Diablo games... but still remaining very independant from the franchise.
The game is a 3rd person Action/RPG dungeon crawler. It is extremely skill based (learn enemy patterns, how to block, how to parry, enemy weaknesses, when to avoid conflict, etc. or you will die fast) and very unforgiving. However, despite the initial difficulty, it only strengthened my resolve to complete that particular area. Replayability comes in the form of "New Game+." After you complete the game, your character is carried over into a New Game with upscaled difficulty, drops, and experience gain. Think Nightmare/Hell difficulty. This can repeated infinitely (if I'm not mistaken).
The equipment and overall aesthetic of the game is a pleasing mix of traditional and stylized. While the normal weapons in the game are very realistic (bardiches look like bardiches), the uniques are insanely creative (i.e. a knife that is in the shape of a giant demonic fish hook).
The character customization mainly consists of player-controlled stat allocation ala Diablo 1 and 2 which dictate the equipment, assignable spells, health/mana, and damage bonuses. Essentially if a player starts off with a Soldier class, he can allocate stats into Magic and Willpower to become a Soldier/Mage hybrid.
There is online multiplayer as well which is done in a way that is unprecedented (too much to really describe; I suggest looking up youtube videos or reading articles). Most importantly, it supports Coop, PVP, and PK. Believe me, the PVP and PK is extremely fun. (PVP and PK is actually encouraged to more evil-aligned players).
[God, Sony should be paying me for this rant...]
Anyway, guys, I have the utmost confidence that a fan of the Diablo games will find something to enjoy in Demon's Souls. If you have a PS3 or are planning to pick one up, you owe it to yourself to have this game.
Played it a bit at a friend's house (I don't own a ps3).
And in a couple of hours besides dying a few times I can't say there was anything revelating. It's a Team Japan game I think.

lol it can still easily be a ranger since who said you cant shoot arrows at melee distance xD

The Barbarian is from Arreat, a very cold snowy mountain top, but they are much tougher than normal humans, so they don't need warmth.

Where are Barbarians originally from? Sumeria, or more specifically Mesopotamia, AKA Europe. Think the Alps and the Pyrenees
It's less like a direct Diablo-esque dungeon romp than Sacred 2 is, so it is sort of hard to compare. Think a little Fable 2...with Zelda scale bosses thrown in...and then throw in gothic, depth, and satisfying difficulty. I would link you to a trailer, but I'm not entirely sure if they're allowed on this forum. You can just search "Demon's Souls" in youtube and watch the official trailer. It should give you a pretty good idea of how the game looks and introduce you to the overall atmosphere (which I think is one of the many highlights of the game).

The game seems to be great and the twist they did on MP is quite nice but I still wouldn't buy a whole PS3+HDDTV to play this. Not enough replayability, imo (which is a problem to most console games). Still, I wish I could play this on my PC.
That's understandable. It really feels like a PC game on console...I think that's why I've fallen in love with it as much as I have. If for some reason, a Playstation 3 parachutes from the skies and lands in your living room, I'd suggest picking it up.
By the way, I wouldn't suggest it to the kind of person who gives up after a couple of deaths. It's designed to kick your ass until you get good enough to kick its ass instead. Ghosts n' Goblins style.

I played this game and personally it's a fav, the difficulty takes awhile to get used to but it's satisfying once you get better and better, I made a Temple Knight(think paladin). It comes to north america Oct. 6th

"The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell."
I love it! first game in ages that's really challenging from the start.
Even though I already died a lot, it never got frustrating, it just motivated me more to figure out how to beat the enemies and bosses.
Even though it is really unforgiving if you die, when you finally beat that demon you feel great
I also love the multiplayer elements like the messages you can leave behind for other players to warn them or help them out.
It sure has helped me quite a few times
This game will keep me occupied while waiting for Dragon Age: Origins and that will keep me occupied while waiting for Diablo 3.
heres a couple more with some bosses in them [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic] [pic]
The co-op is awesome really helps with some bosses/areas.
PvP in the game is great too I snuck in and killed a couple people the other day

"The righteous shall fall before the wicked, and all of Creation shall tremble before the burning standards of Hell."
I got killed by a black phantom the other day
But yeah I love the online aspects of the game and how they blend in with the single player experience.
I always laugh at the messages some players leave behind in 1-2 on the bridge, saying: "its safe here" when there will be a dragon breathing fire on you if you walk ahead too soon
This game looks so good. I have been excited about this game for quite some time. I am preordering it very soon. The only thing i know wont be the best is the customization and replayablity (but what compares to diablo... honestly?). Kinda seems like a 3d version of diablo 1 with zelda elements...both AMAZING games. Fable is good but lacks SO MUCH polish that this game seems to have.
Customisation as in making you characters face look the way you want to isn't that great, no.
but you can divide stats and pretty much make your character play the way you want to. I guess that would count as customisation as well in a way.
Replayability depends on how badly you want the trophy's, getting the platinum trophy is pretty hard to get and will probably require you to start a "New Game+" at least once which has increased difficulty.
Unless you play with a guide which will snatch you all the trophy's on your first play through, but that would ruin the experience imo.
lol that is what i meant by customization. And dont get me wrong the game looks awesome, but its not exactly diablo...or even close to it : P. For the amount of items and stuff it seems more like fable. And as for character classes arent they like diablo 1, where it doesnt REALLY matter, but you start with different stats or something? Either way the game looks freakin awesome.
Yeah that's about right, you can pretty much choose any class, they just start out with different stats and items.
Though the Royal class is best suited for a magic user because of the MP regen ring you start out with.
As for items yeah I guess you could compare it to fable, there are some nice sets and some random items but nothing like Diablo in numbers with randomly generated stats etc.
I own it but haven't had the chance to play it as I've been busy and have far too many great new games, but from the LITTLE i have played i cant wait to get into it more. it does certainly seem like a 3d Diablo 1 type game.
This game is GREAT. I just love the skil stress, the graphics, the style.
Imo the only downside is the classes. They are meant to bring too much different gameplay or customisation. They are far from balanced and many are just to add flavor to the game (ex: barbarians starts almost itemless but don't look to have a advanatage over other classes). This is actually O.K., since the game are not truely a rpg where classes and builds are the biggest part, still i would prefer a better class scheme. Maybe a simple warrior-archer-assassin-mage division with brutal gameplay differences would be better...
Games great, definitely not newb friendly in anyway. It's kill or be killed so all PvM lovers on Diablo would prob hate the game cause Pk'ers will join your game and kill you, which is why this game is amazing cause its simple kill or be killed. No carebear.
