I have the same progressing issue in D3 that I had in D2. I have zero interest and talent when it comes to trading (AH). I buy stuff and sell stuff, but for the most part I sell cheaper than I buy for, so I never build up the gold necessary to buy really good gear. As a result I'm stuck in an extremely slowly progressing loop of mediocrity where I farm easy areas (can barely handle Act 2) with crappy gear, get more crappy drops that I can only sell to NPC merchants, and for that gold I buy ever so slightly less mediocre gear, repeat.
What annoys me the most though is that after almost 500 hours of total playtime, I've yet to see a single legendary/set drop. I have people I play with that have less total playtime and less MF than I do, but have found 15-30 legendary/set items (crappy, but still), and that fact is really starting to get on my nerves.
In short: I have to farm more.
One of the reasons I try to avoid the AH, as well, may be because I don't have sense for what items go for or what a good price is for something. When I have a decent item I think will sell for a pretty penny, I end up reducing the sellout price so much, I could just have sold it ingame OR the item doesn't even sell after 4-5 tries (each time reducing the sellout price) then I just get over it and sell it in game.
As for legendary/set items, I've picked up only 2 useless ones in Inferno with my monk. Had picked up another 2 during my playthrough with my other characters. But I think my combined time played is just over 200hours. Yeah it sucks if that 0.00006% (?) chance to get a legendary just doesn't get you one after 500+ hours...
It's all up to chance (obviously). Even with a 50% to get a legendary, theoretically you can still NOT get one even after 500+ hours.
But that first time you see a legendary, you get a crazy adrenaline rush! Well I did. At least you won't miss a legendary drop, since Blizz made it light up etc. So hopefully you'll get one soon!
Well, they're increasing drop rates so it should only be a matter of time now... I hope. I suppose that it would happen faster if I was capable of doing more efficient farming, such as hunting treasure goblins or doing some form of "runs", but every time I try to do something like that with relative speed I end up dying and losing more gold than I earn.
Also, anyone with a good memory. What was the name of the guy that used to post in the URT long ago (and perhaps recently, I have no idea), the one with the owl avatar that participated in many of our old philosophical/scientifical discussions. I don't really have a reason for wanting the name; I've just forgotten it and would like to remember again.
Whats up?! So little activity going on in this thread...have to say I haven't contributed myself. Still enjoying D3 after almost 5 months? Do have a level 60 Monk (10) or something. Haven't played with him in a while...still trying to get each class character to level 60. My Barbarian, Wizard and Witch Doc are level 51 starting in Hell and my Demon Hunter are 35. I'm progressing each character through each difficulty, so I'm playing the DH atm. Don't have much time to play though, but I'll get there.
Love the Monk and Witch Doc the most. The Barbarian is meh (mine doesn't feel powerful enough) and the DH is my least favourite. I just don't enjoy playing her as much as the others.
Don't judge. Only have 124 hours on my Monk and haven't bought anything over 200k on the AH (since I've never had a decent drop of anything; biggest sellout was less than 500k I think. Have 5mil gold atm, but trying upgrade my gear in game). Also my skill selection might not sit well with some, but I like how they each skillset play. BUT if you do have advice (part from my monk needing crit dmg & %), please do share.
Getting my ass handed to me in University atm. Slacked off WAY to much last quarter and have to get up to date, but it's proving difficult. Not because the work is hard (it also is), but I'm so lazy right now and my sleep schedule is fucked (3am here lol).
But yeah this is my first post in a while and maybe my last in a while (unless some of you reply). Probably not, I'll be here tomorrow! huehue (<--- not in an offensive way).
There is a thread on two handed barb builds in which you can gear up pretty easy, it definitely has made my barb much more enjoyable the level 50's were so brutal. Do I need to log in into Bnet to link my profile?
I just recently got my wiz to 60, I mainly focused on arcane builds but lately I went to blades/archon build, I have no crit so I maybe have 30-50% up time. I tried a meteor build for fun but waiting till 1.0.5. before I switch to one. Overall the wizard is the least favourite class for me
My WD was my original 60 and my only MF farm capable character. I've tinkered with a few builds but mainly sticking to a pet/bears build right now. I wish locus swarm was buffed it was my favourtie ability while leveling up.
My DH is my highest leveled mainly since they are an easy GF farmer, sadly since I use her for GF farming I haven't been able to experiment with many builds, I feel DH's are the most pigeon holed class currently (when it comes to average/below averaged gear).
I only have a 24 Monk I only play him when my buddy is online (which almost never happens). So I made a hardcore monk for the fun of it... can't really comment more on them except they are really fun at the low levels.
As for the University approach good sir, don't fall behind. I made that mistake my first year and it set me back for a couple of years, you have to take school a bit more seriously especially when you’re paying thousands of dollars per semester. I find going to all classes and doing all the assignments is adequate.
Hello Ophion, it's nice to meet you! I must have gotten here just after you left.

Yeah someone replied (or rather quoted)!
Cool will check out this thread once I start playing with my barb again. I really enjoyed him in early game, smashing zombies to bits with that slow yet powerful 2h swing.
Also yeah you can link your profile if it's no hassle, thanks. Will also like to go check out your WD, cause I'm also using pets (not yet bears).
About university: I'm 3de year atm and passed my first 2 years with no real hassle, so I know about hard work/going to class etc. I exponentially became more and more lethargic each passing year, I think it's because I still passed my 2de year even though I didn't work nearly as much as I did in the first year. I have 2 older brothers and 2 sisters and all of them just told me not to fuck my first year up. It will just get more tedious repeating subjects etc. I followed their advice and all, but for some reason this year I'm just super lazy.
Dunno if unmotivated is the right word to use cause I still enjoy the work. MY problem is getting started with the work. If I start something, I usually complete it or go as far as I can.
Luckily for me I have a bursary for 4 years, so an extra year I'll have to pay for! I agree with going to class and doing assignments, but this cold, rainy weather doesn't help much!!

Ahh the good old burnout of "I want to get on with my life", I went to post secondary for over 6 years and yah I know the feeling. All I can suggest is just think of it will be over soon and never again.
I can't seem to figure out how to link profiles, every time I go to bnet I don't seen option to look for or link profiles and I can't log in from work as I don't have my authenticator with me.

google something like: battlenet + slayerviper#xxxx
I actually had a day a while back where I came home from work around 2pm, checked the net for a few minutes and passed out on the bed. Woke up the next day with my alarm going off for work at 5am. ~15 hours of sleep and I was still so tired waking up. Lol.
Also when I try to save any change in my "Profile Settings" I get the following error: "Sorry, but you may not put URLs in profile fields that can not contain them."
I have two characters that can (kinda) handle act 2. A block of solid Monk that chills around at 9k damage, but doesn't take any damage unless I get trapped in desecration or something. It's progress, but extremely slow progress.
The other one is a Barbarian with a whopping 45k damage, tons of durability, but crappy life gain. I'm fine for as long as there are 3-4 enemies around, but less than that and Revenge can't heal me fast enough, which obviously translates to eventual death in longer elite fights. Depending on the affix rolls I may or may not have to pay more in repair costs than I gain from the questing.
Rend will be your next best friend, I haven't touched revenge since.

Yeah, Rend would be reliable for life gain, but I tried it and it just doesn't work for me.
Rend heals for about 10% of my max hp per second and enemy, while Revenge heals me for 5% per activation and enemy. In the initial engage I'm being hit enough for Revenge to heal more than Rend, but at the end of the fight I would get about twice to four times as much health from Rend.
However, I'm also using Revenge as my primary AoE damage, and Rend is crappy in that aspect.
Rend does a flat 140% damage per second.
Revenge does 220% damage per activation, and in initial engages (before elites are the only enemies still standing) I can usually activate Revenge at least 2 times per second, which translates to 440% damage per second, over 3 times as high as Rend.
My current strategy (playing Berserker Rage) is pretty much to pop War Cry and Battle Rage, run into the thickest part of the pack, stack up Frenzy, spam Revenge, pop Ignore Pain, and spam more Revenge. That takes care of the weak packs, but not the elites.
Rend would help against the elites, but if I replace Revenge I end up getting overwhelmed by minor enemies instead.
In fact I've tried replacing Revenge with a lot of stuff, but I've come to the conclusion that it is essentially the only skill in my build I can't replace. Every time I try I end up losing more damage than I get in survivability, or vice versa. Revenge is just too crucial when you're trying to stay at max Fury, and at the same time deal decent damage.
I was in the exact same boat as you using a very similar build, the two hand build that me and Killtrox (name change for the win) were discussing earlier is the very same I am now referring to use. I've tripled my damage, AoE is better, and I don't die as often, you can even rend 1-2 enemies run away and you'll be at half health in a few seconds.

Unfortunately don't I know anything LoL/HoN/Dota related, well maybe HoN, cause my roommate play it quite often and I watch him play sometimes.
In other news, 3 of my 5 characters are level 60 (1) at least. It is my goal to get each class to at least level 60 (1). My other 2 characters are level 51 starting in Hell. It's gonna feel epic when I get all 5 to 60.
Last I gave a run-through of my characters, only my Monk was in Inferno. My barb didn't feel epicly strong, when playing Nightmare/beginning of Hell, but now he just feel so fucking strong. Have to thank Slayerviper for showing that 2handed barb thread, I didn't change much, but the little changes were significant. "Furious Charge" into a huge pack of demons and spamming that till most are dead are so cool (have the rune that -2sec per enemy hit).
