There you go bud =) Your first even upvote is from me!
edit; FREEEEEE CAAAAAAAAAANDYYYYYY
Here's one from me too. It's late in the day. What am i saving these votes for?
NATHAN CLUB WOMAN, DRAG TO CAVE. IF ONLY NATHAN KNEW HOW TO UPVOTE, HE'D GIVE DEM OUT TO ANYTHING WITH TA-TA'S
Edit; srry couldn't help myself, this thread is slightly ridiculous >< It's like arguing about how the pretty girl gets the promotion, and yes it's unfair but it's not only the world we live in, it's in nature. Again; TA-TAS
If you want to prove a point, go ahead and make another profile (assuming the mods are ok with that -- I'd PM one first), but I don't think you'll see a major difference, assuming you don't alter your posting habits.
I think InfamousGKs experiment would be interesting. If someone does it, I'd like to see the results.
I doubt it will make very much difference. There will probably be a slight difference because of a factor you mentioned earlier:
"I don't think that anyone ever thinks, "she's a woman so I'll upvote her." At most, I think they just notice her avatar / forum name, notice she's a woman and then pay more attention to her because that's what guys do."
In a community where men outnumber women who list their gender by a very wide margin, I guess realistically that will have some effect. The real question is will it be a significant difference? I'm going to guess "no", but i'll admit I could be wrong.

These are pretty much my thoughts as well. It could be interesting, and I think it will make a small difference (ie, less than 10%, though other factors will contribute as well since there's randomness involved), but there's always the chance that I'm wrong.

LOL!
It is a bit ridiculous, but it's interesting, after I've thought about it for a while.
On the pretty girl gets the promotion thing though, there's a lot more to that. I work in technology, and I never feel like I'm taken as seriously as the males. My male counterparts can be somewaht dismissive, and I have to work harder to get my ideas taken seriously. Respect is not easy to come by for a woman in a male dominated industry or work environment. Also being thought attractive is more likely to get you undocumentable harassment than promotions.
I'm not saying that scenario doesn't happen. I'm just saying it's not necesssarily the norm.
I vote people up if I agree or like what they say...-shrug-
I vote for people with cuddly animals as set as their profile picture.
<---------
But seriosuly, the upvote function seems to be under-utilised on this forum. I rarely see things getting liked unless they are like breakind diablo 3 news sorta stuff

It's funny and sad that in 2012, it can still be uncomfortable for men and women to work together, but there it is. This isn't particularly true at the company I work for now, but it sure was when I was in the Army. Infantry guys have pretty notoriously foul mouths and say a lot of vulgar things. It's part of being a soldier in that testosterone tends to run high, there are hardly ever any women around, almost all of the guys are below 25, and they kill people as part of their job which takes a psychological toll. It was unbelievably intimidating when there were women around as, if one of them heard you say something inappropriate and reported you, your military career was pretty much over. But EVERYBODY said those sorts of things, virtually without exception, and the few who didn't were conspicuous. You just had to make sure you didn't get caught.
In the corporate world, it's different, obviously, but it can still be intimidating to work with women who don't make themselves part of the boys' club because the wrong comment at the wrong time could end the guy's career. I think that can play itself out as men being dismissive of women out of resentment or nervousness. But then again, there are other factors involved as well, such as whether the woman asserts herself as much as the guys (which is really no-win a lot of the time because to a lot of guys, there's a fine line between mousy and bitchy) and whether the particular guys in question just happen to be boneheads. To be honest though, the only reason I treat the one woman in my office any differently than the men is that she's my boss.

I think it does depend a lot on where you are, and what industry you are in. Where I am at currently, I've had no harrassment whatsoever. But certain kinds of men do not like being corrected by me, or having me present a more viable concept than something he presented.
Of course no one likes to be one upped by anyone, I guess. And no one likes to be wrong. But some of my co-workers get unusually defensive if they get shown up by me particularly. Part of it could be that I feel like I'm not taken seriously, so I don't always present things in the most polite way. I might be a bit confrontational because I feel like I'm fighting for validity sometimes.
Thank you for making this topic so i know those votes even exist. To be honest this is the first time i see female users in a topic. And yes they are voting for them because they saw that those users a women. They post mostly offtopic because women comments in RL are often offtopic too and they need more appreciation and attention (which is normal for them, does not mean they got nothing important to say, they just do it). In my opinion the OP is attention horse (dont get me wrong), but who cares about such things as votes in a forum.
Im not sure if you actually meant horse, or if you actually meant to say "attention wh0re"...
not sure why but it bugged me enough to post a reply
OT: @tanis0, i believe that the #9 reason you gave is pretty much the reason as to why women seem to get more upvotes. If a dude sees a hot chick in the avatar, they're more likely to stop and look at it, then read the comment. once they finish theyll continue to skim through the other posts...and stop once they see another hot chick in an avatar lol
There are a few things that factor into whether you're more likely to get upvotes or not. Mostly things like...
Are you a staff member? Yes -> Are you a mod? -> Yes - You get less rep because you're the bad guy. Are you news staff? -> Yes - You get lots of public exposure so more rep!
Are you a female? Yes - More rep on average
Are you posting in off-topic a lot? -> Yes - People are a lot more social there
Are you the lucky 5% that have received rep from a regular forum post? -> Yes - You're either really lucky or you made a badass post.
My theory is girls just get more attention than guys do, period. (A lot of it can be negative too /shrug)
There are even a few meme's about it, usually facebook related. [EXAMPLE IMAGE LINK]
I just think girls are "viewed" more than guys (be it on facebook, match.com, forums, etc), and thus would have higher results in "hits" versus a male. Does that make sense? It's tomorrow already and I'm not usually up this late so I'm not sure if I'm making sense.
Like if a guy and a girl were in a race to sell apples. The girl will have 100 customers and sell 89 apples. The guy will have 15 customers and sell 15 apples. The girl will sell more apples because she generates more customers. I guess that's kind of my theory.
I think OP is somewhat correct, but it's not simply about the poster's sex. Posters that differentiate from others are probably more likely to get an upvote. Whether the differentiation is from rad posting, being or not being a girl, or a groovy signature, probably does not matter that much.

This.
Around here, female law students outnumber male law students (something like 55-45 ratio), but the industry is still strongly male-dominated since law schools were male-dominated until the 90's. It's pretty easy to observe that women need to take an extra step to be taken as seriously as men.
I was literally just talking about this with a girl at work today, and it's upsetting. This is unfortunately apparent in real life as well as in the gaming community, especially if you're a pretty girl. If you post your picture in a thread titled "REAL LIFE PICTURES!" along with 15,000 other people, somehow you'll be singled out and ripped to shreads:
either because you don't exist (even though... my mother clearly remembers giving birth to me)
nothing you say is ever correct - even if male Joe Schmoe next to you confirms your statement using identical words.
your fan boys will stalk your facebook, cant take a hint after 3 years, somehow fall in love with you even though they've never met you in RL
or you make ONE mistake talking about a game you havent played in 5 years, and the moment your memory comes back to you, it's too late because you'll never be taken seriously again - go brush your hair you silly girl

quick everyone! look, she has no upvotes
It is a very stereotypical way to look at it, but that doesn't mean it's inaccurate. I agree with you but only in the realm of things like social networks and customer service.
The current medical team I'm working with has an elderly male nurse and a young female registrar, and I couldn't count the amount of times that patients confuse the nurse for the consultant and the registrar for the nurse (admittedly, I did it on my first day) and basically ignore the registrar and focus all their attention on communicating with the nurse!
Edit; srry couldn't help myself, this thread is slightly ridiculous >< It's like arguing about how the pretty girl gets the promotion, and yes it's unfair but it's not only the world we live in, it's in nature. Again; TA-TAS

Very true, the opposite scenario probably happens more often then the one I mentioned, especially if it's in something deemed more 'male' than female.
