So far I have tried:
Blowing into it.
Cleaning it.
Restarting it by holding the home and power buttons simultaneously.
Blowing into it so more and a second try at restarting it.
All the controls on it say that the volume is on and everything is in working order. Headphones work perfectly. I don't want to send it in to Apple because near the end of the year, I'm getting the 5th Gen iPod Touch.

The few times I've seen people bring in their iPod Touches into the retail store for that, we had to send it into Apple for repairs. If restarting it didn't work, and no noise is coming out of it what so ever, you're probably screwed.

It's possible that there could be some moisture damage. You could try and see if you've set off any of the moisture sensors, and then that could be your problem.

I'm 90% sure unless you jailbreak it, and open up the hidden IOS options you can't :(. I've never had to, not my field, I sell stuff lol. If I remember correctly though, the older iPhones and iPods had a small sheet of paper in the senor that would turn pink when it got wet to the point it had to start shutting down systems to visually signify a problem. So shine a light in the connector and see if you can't spot a little pink line on the top or bottom. If you can, awesome because you know that's your problem. If you can't, I'd bring it in to get it checked out and priced for repair.

Beat man.. I mean you could jailbreak it and look up how to reset the sensor, but it's a shot in the dark (love that song). If you're getting a new one somewhat soon, I'd just use ear buds to last you. On the other hand if you feel like spending the money, I bet they could fix it.

Yeah that was a big selling point of the 2ng gen.. Don't fret to much, the next gen iTouch will make you feel alright'. The retina display is insane.. I'm sure the contrast and viewing angle will be even better in the 5th gen.
I'm holding off on any new IOS product until the iPad 3.. If that thing has a retina display.. dear god.. I'd just swipe through super high-res pictures all day.. Anyway, GL man.

I remember hearing something about the UK pushing for all phones and portable media devices to have both a mini usb port, and a AM/FM radio. Pretty sure it never got passed though. Either way Apple seems to find loopholes in everything forcing them to change their products.. I'm pretty sure they're the only major brand yet who has somehow managed to legally not add a mini usb port to their mobile products..
