No, I learned it in my physics class last year. I'm planning on going into engineering so I tried to learn everything that class had to offer, and I guess I at least learned something.

There's this little statement that's called Fermat's Principle. It states that light takes the fastest rout instead of the shortest distance.
Refraction is also an example of this fastest time principle. Why would a beam of light make a bend to go from A to B if it could go in a simple straight line?
Let's take an example. You know those hot summer days when the air above the asphalt is really hot? Or when you look into a fire? Well, if you look above that heat source you will see the air shimmering/bending. But why? Surely if it's the shortest route the light would go in a straight line and not wave around like that? Well, light seems to go faster in cold air than in warm air, so it'll avoid the warm air more.
Now about the shortest distance in space-time it's probably correct, since it also encompasses time. However, since it incompasses time that would eliminate each of the two answers I gave there.

For example, light travels slower when it passes through water.
Let's say that we have something very very long consisting of water. It would take a shorter time for the light to go around it to reach a point on the other side, but it won't do that. It will go straight through the water unless it hits the surface at an angle.
It depends on what possibilities it has.
A better way to word that question would be.

You raise a valid point. A beam of light will only search for the fastest route when an interface is placed in between. The question will hereby be declared false and since you pointed it out you will get that point.

I searched for a bit and the simple EM answer would be no, since photons have no charge. They can be affected on a quantum scale but it is so smale that it's negligible in this discussion.
Electron rays (such as in an old CRT monitor) are altered with a magnet nearby. Hold a magnet close to such a screen and it will look cool (but you might harm the screen in the process).

I honestly have no idea. I started playing civilization 2 and picked up the series from there. I don't think I have even seen a screen shot from civ 1.

It has been ported to the Atari ST and Mac. Both of them are Personal Computers. That is a hint.
