But see? It's hard to talk about these incidents without eventually someone just saying how they should/shouldn't have the right to own or carry a gun. But I don't think that's the point here.
Ok well I was being a bit flippant about the subject.
I agree, the incedent is not about guns. The guy who did this bought the guns legally. This is about some people being off in the head. When it comes right down to it if someone has set out to do something like this nothing will stop them from making it happen. If there was a world with no guns then they would find another way to make it happen.
I think what we should take from this is guns dont kill people. Batman movies do.
America spent hundreds of billions of dollars since September 11 to prevent "terrorist" attacks from apparent foreign "terroriest organisations". Perhaps they should start from internal control.
First off, you're right US has spent a ton. Secondly though, you are wrong on this subject. This man in no way classifies as a terrorist anymore than a thug going into a gas station to rob it and shoot the witnesses.
On topic; This really, really is terrible for those dead and wounded, for those that went through it and their families. I don't however condone the huge overreaction. New York already stated plans to put police at every theater. There were police at this theater, during the time of the shooting, that didn't stop anything. And Siaynoq is correct, this will most defiantly evolve into a gun debate, which is ridiculous.
People are even pulling politics out of this, which blows my mind. This was a very irrational, horrible act made by someone who is insane. You have to be to even seriously consider something like this, so the insane plea (which needs to get taken out of allowable pleas in my opinion) shouldn't be seriously considered. Personally? Death penalty.
I'm glad I live in Canada sometimes, and this is one of those times. This was an awful tragedy but these things do happen and you can't go overboard with impractical protective measures. I wouldn't want to go through security to see a fucking movie. Plus, it's not necessary. This type of event, even in America (I'm sure) is not common at all. You shouldn't have to walk through a metal detector and get padded down when you go into Walmart either, even though it's within the realm of possibility that a shooting could occur.
Anyways, it's massively sad and wrong what happened to those people. I think that everyone should have the right to be safe when going about their daily lifes. Things like this are wrong on so many levels and I wish that they wouldn't occur. I hate to say it but one thing that would help is having strict gun laws like we do here in Canada. These things don't really happen here in Canada. Certainly not as often as in America. I'm sure our suicide rate is much less too because it's pretty difficult to gain access to a gun.
I'm not shitting on America at all, don't misunderstand me
Just want people to be safe. Strict firearm laws might help.
That's so idealistic though. Passing laws that say guns can't be used isn't going to just make them disappear, or make people give them up. Even in countries that have passed full on anti-gun laws it doesn't get rid of them, and in many cases violent crime rates go up. I'm pretty sure we have an anti-cocaine law, that's still around. If somehow a law was passed and the guns magically disappeared from everywhere in the US, they'd just be smuggled across the border and only criminals would have access to them freely.
Yeah I think it would be great if all guns would just disappear and no one could have them, but that's not going to happen. So I'd rather the option be available for people to defend themselves if need be. If someone breaks into your house in the middle of the night with the intent to harm you or your family, are you just going to yell "Wait please. Hold on until the police arrive."? I'd much rather have a means and a way to defend myself and my family from someone who wants to do us harm.
The thought of only the military and police being able to carry weapons gives me the chills. You're just sacrificing any freedom or defense you have left. What you're suggesting is very similar, if not more strict than what Nazi Germany had in place.
Let's make movies safe again by taking everyones guns away...........
Random violence is random.
As is usual when these cowards commit such acts, they tend to get freaked out by the reality of what they're doing. The guy was obviously quite prepared for a full-on shoot out but instead he gave up without a fight after breaking off his engagement. The reality of blood, guts and death seems to always cause these cowards to relent their actions.....as if they really thought the detachment would be similar to a movie or video game.
Maybe it's time that the US re-thought gun control as it seems that any mental patient can get their hands on a gun.
The suspected assailant had exactly one run-in with the cops: a speeding ticket. One.
But please, do exaggerate more how this guy was a mental patient and it was so obvious how crazy he was, with his erratic behavior and what-not.
Sheesh.
EDIT: And you've lost your bet on blaming it on "metal music" before the incident was 24 hours old. They've already tried tying it to the Tea Party, or right wingers. Of course we all know this guy was probably just some one-off with no political affiliation who descended into craziness in his apartment, by himself.
Thats another thing that chaps my ass. The use of the word terrorist. Foreign terrorists, domestic terrorists, oh god they're everywhere.
Not to nitpick, but terrorism is anything that creates fear, technically you could consider all the news reporting on that attack terrorist. But back on topic, unless it's an organized group doing this kind of thing, we shouldn't need to be informed of this, this can only lead to people thinking they might get the "recognition they deserve" if we acknowledge them.
Since we're nitpicking, terrorism implies the use of violence and intimidation to produce fear, so no, news reports could not be considered "terrorism".
No governing body will ever be able to stop a wacko from doing things like this in a free(ish) society. It's very sad, but it is the price of living in a place where one is not subjected to metal detectors and pat downs everywhere they go.
The argument that gun laws (or complete eradication) don't work because criminals don't follow the law is incorrect though. Take a look at countries which do not allow guns at all; they have almost no gun deaths each year. Now, stabbing deaths on the other hand...
If that had happened in Texas the headline would have read: "Armed man shot by movie crowd after opening fire in theatre"
Fight fire with fire. Rediculous lawsuite. Im sure the whole law will change now /sarcasm off
Sad for their families. Hope they will get through this horror in a certain way.

so because he has no other run ins with the police that means he doesn't have some sort of mental issue? Over the last 60 days the guy bought several guns and over 6000 rounds of ammunition, firstly this should have raised some kind of flag to SOMEONE but no they just let it slide.
Then lets move on to the booby trapped house he lives in, there's something not right with that, he's planning on trying to kill anyone that enters the house, that to me says he's not fully right in the head as he's planning on attempting to kill several more people.
Then there is the issue of the shooting in the first place, no-one in their right mind would just go out and shoot people anywhere, let alone a movie premiere. Also the fact that it's been claimed that he models himself on the joker, a fictional character again says to me that he has some kind of mental issue.
And yet, with all this he was still able to LEGALLY obtain 4 firearms and 6000 rounds of ammo without raising any kind of suspicion.
The point of my post was: how could anyone have known he was going to blow a fuse? You can buy guns illegally, you know. And ammo. And protective gear.
Somehow I think this has escaped your thinking, being as it doesn't align with your idealogy.
edit: spelling
The dude wanted to harm people and cause terror. If he wasn't able to get a gun he would have made a bomb. People who do these kind of things are mentally ill and it can happen to anybody. Just because he was a neuroscience whatever doesn't make immune to depression or other mental illnesses. We can use this as a lobby for anti gun laws or we can use this as awareness for mental health and instead of taking guns away from everybody, make them harder to get in the hands of anyone with psychological issues. While you are supposed to check for these type of things a lot of places don't. The rules need to be enforced stronger. Taking away guns won't stop these things from happening. Again people like columbine shooters, Virginia Tech, and the dude who shot the congress woman, they would have done it another way. It was their will and determination. Not an act caused by "hey I have a gun, this would be really convenient",
Maybe it's time that the US re-thought gun control as it seems that any mental patient can get their hands on a gun.

the guns were bought LEGALLY. Gun control in the US is pretty lapse, it cannot be denied. In the UK you need licences for different weapons which are only issues by the police department, all guns need to be registered and the reason for owning them needs to be declared. This therefore means that a 24 year old student would not be able to really justify owning these types of weapons, about the only way he'd be able to justify it is if he went hunting but again they probably wouldn't actually just give him said licence.
I know the guns were purchased legally, I read Drudge Report too, lol.
Again, he didn't need to BUY THEM LEGALLY to get them.
People keep touting the fact that he legally bought them, as if somehow that explains his senseless murder spree. Perhaps he'd have done this 60 days ago if he didn't have to legally purchase them? We don't know. All I'm saying is gun control doesn't prevent this type of thing from happening. Though I'll meet you in the middle on one thing: citizens at large shouldn't be able to own tactical assault rifles.
And, as a disclaimer, I'll tell you I don't own a gun. I used to, but sold it after my first child was born. I simply could not see a safe way of securing the firearm where I could access it in the event of a life-threatening situation without the danger of my child finding it.
Agree with the OP. Here's my view, summed up by the wise Marilyn Manson in a post-Columbine Rolling Stone interview:
"I think it's terrible when anyone dies, especially if it is someone you know and love. But what is more offensive is that when these tragedies happen, most people don't really care any more than they would about the season finale of Friends or The Real World."
I think it's all the more offensive just because of the circus that happens. ABC News incorrectly identified the shooter as a member of the Colorado Tea Party, then a couple hours later said, "oops. Wrong James Holmes. Sorry everybody." In the rush to scream "FIRST!" on national television, media outlets are reporting any information they find, regardless of factuality. They handled the clean-up very well, but the simple act of reporting such easily proven falsehoods as fact is a picture of the sad state of today's media. On a related note, the "Tea Party" angle was jumped upon so quickly because people want to rationalize all of this away. "It's the music he's listening to!" "It's those violent video games!" "He was a far right-wing, Tea Party conservative, so of course he'll have guns!"
"Who gives a fuck what he was listening to?! What ever happened to crazy? What, you can't be crazy no more?!" - Chris Rock
What do you mean "why so serious?" I cannot think of any reasonable way to discuss this incident without being serious. I really dont know how could the government stop these kind of things, especially when guns are so easily obtained in some of the states.
The argument that gun laws (or complete eradication) don't work because criminals don't follow the law is incorrect though. Take a look at countries which do not allow guns at all; they have almost no gun deaths each year. Now, stabbing deaths on the other hand...
Criminals own guns to assert their power through them to achieve a certain goal. I think the appeal of owning a gun for a criminal goes up once there are far less around. That gives them even more power over law abiding citizens.

Our prisons are currently too full of marijuana offenders to house all the true dangers to society, sorry.
