So as far as I can tell, congress has dropped sopa and pipa because of the overwhelming outcry against it! Hell yea guys, this is a huge victory. Don't be fooled, those who would say 'it was only against foreign sites, it wouldn't have hurt american sites' obviously don't understand what laying groundwork in congress means. If these had passed, I can guarantee you that other bills would have immediately popped up to take down websites in America as well. Sopa and Pipa were against free speech, thank you everyone for helping to shut it down!
Figured as much, they aren't about to stop just because we cried out once. We will have to keep fighting against shit like this. I mean hell they've been talking about censoring the internet for a decade now. Just watch out for this, sopa and pipa, and others. They could easily slip it into a new bill to try and hide it.
And SOPA + PIPA .. (which actually means "amateur / loser / garbage + pipe / flute / f**k", I am not joking! check google translate or any other site!)
To break it down; Government would require every internet service provider to log EVERY piece of information about everyone on their server. To include but not limited to; Bank account numbers, credit card numbers, searches, IP addresses, where you live, and more. Then of course the government has full power, without probable cause, to search ANYONES information. Suddenly those phrases you typed into google could potentially get you in trouble, maybe jail time. Who know's maybe typing in 'Child pornography bill' just to search for this could get you arrested.
Again another bill that threatens free speech, under the guise that to catch a very small criminal. Don't get me wrong child pornography is terribly bad, but this bill is worse.
Sorry to break it to you guys but the "The Protecting Children from Internet Pornographers Act of 2011" already passed. As misleading as it sounds it has very little to do with Child Pornography or protecting anyone.
Also SOPA and PIPA will be back, keep your eyes peeled.
The megaupload thing is kind of scary. Who needs SOPA or PIPA it seems.
How about google and friends lobby on washington to get the feds to raid the offices of ABC/CBS/NBC/FOX and jail their writers for creating such terrible shows since 2000.
Edit: And I don't like this ISP logging information thing... I'm in canada so we won't have a copy-cat law for a while probably, but yeah sounds pretty bad. Child pornography is bad, but what about us 99.999999% normal users who find it a bit trippy to have everything logged? I think I'll move to China where it's more relaxed... right!?
Edit 2: And the funny thing is how quiet the news has been about this. EXCEPT Aljazeera, they actually even talked about megaupload. Oh well :/
The mainstream media is very good at allowing important news to slip on by. Sadly even though Google sort of protested SOPA they employ a lot of the same tactics in filtering out certain news sites and other things. Not to mention Youtube which they own and how they take down things. I mean check this link out. One video removed for "government criticism" at the request of the government.
They have though refused to take some down that the government and law enforcement have requested that featured police brutality. So it's just a guessing game on how genuine they are compared to how much of a backlash they want to avoid.

Well atleast we have something like the internet today...
Seriously though, why arent all of the 'rich' tech companies doing just as much ads and lobbying for their side (against the media companies)? And if they are, then I'm not seeing the results or excuse me for not catching them.
It's dangerous for them to take a stance against such a thing, because they open themselves up to more abuse and powergrabbing from the government. "Oh you spoke out, you seem to have an awful lot of Copyrighted material up" Take megaupload for example, they spoke out last year about internet "piracy prevention measures" and now what happened. Also a lot of the tech companies are having their pockets filled with dirty money.

.. will return! We need to protest THEN AGAIN.
