I have been able to run SC2, but at lower settings and when things get intense it can get scary. Still, D3 looks great, and I am wondering if you folks think I'll be okay, or what should be my first upgrade when I start seeing some money.
My current PC (according to battle.net) -- will it run D3? If not, what would you change? (It's old, I know...no trash talking!)
CPU TYPE:
AMD Athlon(tm) 64 X2 Dual Core Processor 5200
CPU SPEED:
2.73 GHz
SYSTEM MEMORY:
2 GB
VIDEO CARD MODEL:
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 Ti
VIDEO CARD DRIVER:
nv4_disp.dll
DESKTOP RESOLUTION:
1440x900
HARD DISK SIZE:
465.75 GB
Here's what I'm hoping to build before D3 drops:
CPU
AMD HDE00ZFBGRBOX Phenom II 1100T Black Edition Six Core Processor - 3.30GHz, 6MB Cache, 2000MHz (4000 MT/s)
Motherboard:
ASUS Crosshair V Formula AMD 990FX ROG Motherboard - ATX, Socket AM3+, AMD 990FX Chipset, 2133MHz DDR3 (O.C.), SATA 6.0 Gb/s, RAID, 8-CH SupremeFX Audio, Gigabit LAN, USB 3.0, CrossFireX/SLI Ready (sorry, copy pasted the sale description out of laziness)
PSU: Cooler Master RSC00-80GAD3-US Silent Pro Gold 1200W Power Supply - ATX, Modular, 1200 Watt (or possibly just a 1000W)
This isn't "gaming pc," related per-se, but I feel some more-tech-savvy (than I) types may read this so i'll ask anyhow:
I'm building a hobbie desktop and planning to run linux on it, purely to challenge my windows-based brain a bit and expand my virtual horizons. Through my cursory reading on the subject thus far there are some serious -hardware- compatability issues to be considered. Can someone reccomend to me a place where I can find listings of compatable hardware or a forum where such issues are discussed at length? Most of the info i've picked out of google are quite dated.
Monitor Unless your PC is a beast and you are running the latest graphic cards (multiple cards) aim for a 24" monitor so that you can run at it's optimal resolution down while still giving you a nice big screen. Also not all monitors are created equal, since I started using an IPS monitor I haven't looked back .. it's like looking at a sunset while at the beach vs an old photo, refresh rate is not everything
earMuffs Unless you have a Logitech Z5500 or a half decent amp. setup properly with a reasonable sound card and can crank the volume all night, get a nice pair of earmuffs, something comfortable to wear for hours (or on a hot day) that work well with game surround sound.
Mouse Lash out on a quality mouse and consider if you will be using extra buttons available on some mice .. logitech gaming mice or razor mice are my favourite's. Don't buy a cheap mouse. Keyboards seem less important as most modern games are focused on the mouse, esp. if you pickup one with extra buttons you can script.
When thinking about upgrading or building a PC, people often skimp on the three M's above to get a slightly faster PC.
Strangely .. if you invest in quality M's they tend to last you several years and to be honest, the way you interact with your pc (vision, touch and sound) is primarily through these devices. Placing two computers side by side, if one has invested more into the M's it is quite clear that it will be more immerse and comfortable for long gaming sessions, perfect for Diablo!
Once you reach a certain point a PC is only slightly faster for a dramatically larger cost. Also understand the game you are targeting, a fast dual core or mid range mulit-core processor is typically the same as the top end processors for all but the most demanding games .. the graphics card and power supply combination is where the real choice needs to be made in terms of power. If you ever want to upgrade buy a quality power supply and get a larger capacity than you require as each generation of technology tends to require more power. If you have cash to splash by all means grab an SSD (I have one and love it) .. but also consider getting the 2nd generation technology, leaving room for upgrades .. and invest in the M's
People really need to stop asking the "will my system run d3"
we dont have the specs, so a reasonable individual knowing blizzard and their business model can assume that if you can run sc2 on med setting, you can play diablo 3.
They will probly release a low render graphics option, or just have the graphics scale really well. Blizzard wants as many people being able to run their games as possible.
If you cant run sc2 on med settings, id be worried for now. Until we get system spec releases people, calm down.

but more portable ofc. which is a big plus in my book...also saves on electric bills because of low energy consumption/no need to plug in the outlet.
anyway, hope this runs d3/sc2.
will use it for that and some MMO gaming and web/graphic design.
