Doom is the father of modern FPS games like Half Life, Quake, and Unreal, it has it's place on the list.
The father of modern FPS is technology. The first modern FPS wasn't even DooM, and if DooM didn't come, something else would. Putting all that aside, DooM is a pretty meh game on all sides and is pretty unoriginal even for it's time.
And I suppose Wolfenstein is the grandfather of FPS games.
In the mag. this is there statement on Doom. "Id software's Wolfenstein 3D threw out the first pitch when it came to popularizing the first-person shooter, but Doom knocked it out of the park, giving the genre the kick start it needed to rule the gaming landscape two decades later. Who could forget the first time they chainsawed a demon or pulled the trigger on the BRG9000? More important than the awesome weapons and setting is the inception of Internet-enabled deathmatches; Legend has it that Doom co-creator John Romero coined the term. Opening up John Carmack's brilliant engine to the masses started the first wide-spead modding community, resulting in endless user content distributed over bulletin board systems, and providing training grounds for many of today's top designers."
Doom was the shit.. doesn't mater what came out that was better cause with out Doom it may have never been played today.
I could never play Doom again just cause it would be so boring to me now. Not cause of the graphics. I love the graphics. It's just the gameplay is more repetitive than I can handle. And I'm a guy who plays lots of Diablo 2!
But yeah I have some very wonderful memories playing that game. And I loved how non politically correct that game was. At the time, few could boast such a violent and satanic game. Doom 2 I especially loved though.
Wolfenstein didn't make FPS games nearly as main stream as Doom did. Kinda like saying Populous should be credited for RTS games, when not that many people played it. It takes more to change an industry then to be first. It doesn't matter what your game does, if not enough people play it, it's not going to do anything. That's why Doom is up there.
Actually, speaking of which, Wolfenstein is up there, but Populous isn't? Now that makes no sense.
I never liked ranking games by popularity (which is essentially what this is). It always skips over some very good games that were just not for everybody + foreign games.
Descent, Nox, Elite, Gothic, heXen, Rage of Mages, EVE Online, Diablo I, for God's sake.
Seriously, half the games on that list are brand new. Bioshock? F3? Oblivion? The other half are just random. I'd imagine a good list would contain games that STILL have something to bring to the table, or games that are very well made. Those are, in fact, the greatest games, because they can stand the test of time.
I've heard plenty of these listed games already. But I know there are more good games out there, there are BETTER games out there, they're just hard to find because they were not too popular back in the day. I wish some magazine would find and pick those up, and list them, but I bet the guys who made that list haven't played little of those.

Diablo 1 made the list...#140
just one of the examples #9 Super Mario Bros. 3... sold more than 1 millon units on the Wii alone.
With out the 200 games on this list.. i can agree at least 25 are iffy.. gaming may not be what it is today. These games are all great. Its not a perfect list.. but its not a bad one!

Kind of surprises me no Dungeon and Dragon type games are on here. Those games had a huge impact on several others. Lands of Lore wouldn't even have existed if it wasn't for that game. One of the best RPG games of all time, by the way.
Baldur's Gate II Shadows of Amn #88 - the best D&D game ever made.

Very frustrating for me at times, but overall an enjoyable experience. And I even only finished like 3/4 of the game. Not sure if I could ever resume it though just because before I played it off Gametap and these days Gametap is major fail.
But I loved the music, the voice overs, the artwork, the ambience. The gameplay was annoying at times as party control was kind of difficult and people would always wonder off or get killed very easily. I don't know. But I can easily see why it would rank high in this kind of list.

Though, Need for Speed was one of three racing games I ever liked. :/
That's why I'm proud my Zelda got first place.
