I usually go jogging(running, rather) on a regular basis. I choose late afternoons coz am free and also the sun is less murderous at that time. On that particular day, I came home rather late. Though it was summer, sunset was not too far off. My running track at the time could be completed in 40 minutes, 30 if am fast. The track is like that- 10 minutes along the beach, 15min on a sandy track inland, and finally 10-15min on a rather rocky track(with a hill) among cane fields...before returning to civilisation.
So I set off late that day and when i reached the sandy track, the sun was setting and before i stepped on the rocky path, the sun had set. The change in the atmosphere was incredibly fast. The moment the sun had set, barely a minute passed, before it was completely dark! I was quite some way from the village, so no artificial lighting for me.
My luck it was a near-cloudless summer night. A few stars and a waning moon proved helpful enough...At least until the rocky track went through the cane fields.
Now canes were nearing their harvesting time and reached well over 2m, so the path became really dark.
Now comes the nice part. It had been quite the hot day with a (very) light breeze. However when I walked among the cane fields, a great wind swept through the plants....with the nice typical howling sound that strong wind usually makes. It stopped quite suddenly too...a bit like the whole place has sensed my coming and was either welcoming me or shunning me. At that time, I liked to think of it as a welcoming gesture coz i was breaking out in cold sweat then.
So while picking my way out (walking obviously, coz i couldn't clearly see the rocks)carefully, I started thinking...
Imagination can really be your worst enemy u know...
I started thinking about dungeons in Diablo 1...and corpses and my great friend the butcher(played the game the night before). I actually started to smile at that idea when something else occured to me... I wondered what would happen if i saw faceless cloaked dark figures(like Nazguls) appearing out of the fields... At that thought I started getting chills down my spine...Couldn't clear my mind at all.
The night air was so still after that gust of wind. I was sure that anything out there would hear the mad beating of my heart...
Now, did I mention there was a hill on the rocky track? There was a path on it, bordered by smaller cane plants. I decided to take another path and go round the hill.
It was like that in my mind- if I get on top of the hill, I'll have wide view around...and also a lot of things would see me too... Was losing it...
Now the thing is...i had never taken the path around the hill before...and though my sense of orientation is not that bad, i soon got confused as there were numerous tracks leading off the one i was on. I decided to stick close to the hill until I could see a recognizable path... Needless to say that darkness added with the(completely still) cane fields was not helping my sense of confusion (n fear, hell ya) at all.
N then I saw it- a great white marble tomb...
N i felt relieved! I was on the right path...I never liked the placement of that tomb, but was glad to see it that nightfall. I went on for 10 more minutes, before i glimpsed the first light in the village.
I was finally back.
Lol:D. No need to...especially when u are alone in grim places... In daylight, the whole place looks nice though:).
Left out the queasy bits- like how there were signs of witchcraft on the track(candles and little gutted animals)...too dramatic and coz however much i disbelieve thse stuffs, they scared the shit outa me that day(shame on me)..
Well ya, I live in a place with loads of superstitions and WD wannabe:P
Think of sleepy hollow, scrap the wooden houses...place a few brick houses and a few shops...
