"A lot of people will be grateful afterwards" sounds like sticking your nose into somebody else's business.
Bootcamp is one of the least intelligent places on earth. Only certain individuals need to go there, and that's not up to something like a government to decide. Don't even go there, that's a very horrible idea.
Thank you for posting this so I didn't have to

Actually, it is? The military is a government organization and hence it is up to them to decide who must go there if people want to join its organization. Stop making me wear out my italic button.
Apparently you are missing the point of what she said. She did not say that a government is not allowed to do that. She meant that a government should not have the power to be able to force you in. The government is an institution FOR the people. It should not be used to force innocent people into a camp against their will.

True I don't think they should be able to do that.. but that is beyond us.
People want a bigger government to protect them and help them in times of need, but then again they also don't want a government with too much power that can mold them and control them at will.

The least intelligent place? Do you realize all the useful things Basic Training teaches a person?
Nothing that an engineering major will find useful, I'm sure.
These programs are extremely ineffective when it comes to people with brains. They work for drones because when a drone is told he's a bad person he believes that. And that's what they do back there. Tell you you're a jerk, beat you up, make you run, feed you crap, and generally just play on the lack of exit from the existing situation. Anyone can do that.
Turn a person in a real soldier, try that one. It doesn't work like that, it's nowhere near that darn simple.

Yes, people want a government to ORGANIZE things, what you're describing is communism. Back there, they did just that, molded people into what they wanted, told them exactly what to do and how to do it, and generally had total control over things.
It's all good until the government goes corrupt (which is bound to happen). Which is why I liked the original US system with checks and balances. The draft that existed during Vietnam which you're pointing to was eliminated due to the protest against Vietnam, and if that is to happen again, much more people will be exposed to whatever war US is fighting, and much more people will be aware enough to oppose the draft. Same thing will happen if you force everyone in bootcamps. With this country, it just won't work.

At any rate, I think we've all trolled or gone off topic a bit here. So perhaps we should all wrap this up or get back to welcoming back Johnny or asking him questions about his experience in basic training.

My contract allows me one really bad post per 10,000.

Wow that got intense. To answer Umpa, Air Force PT is 6 days a week, alternating calisthenic and cardiovascular days. On cardio days, you run a group pace based on your ability for 10 minutes, then 15 minutes self-paced. After self-pace, you sprint for 30 second intervals.
On calisthenic days, you do pushups, crunches, partial squats, flutter-kicks, squat-thrusts, 'pyramid pushups', and leg-raises. TI's have fun destroying you on these days. Just don't be 'that guy' and you'll be fine.
Eval runs are 1.5 miles. To pass, you need 11:40 or better (again, I think). My time went from 11-ish to 9:40.
In response to Equinox's post above, I'll agree you don't learn much of use at basic. However, look at the name. It's "basic military training." It's an indoctrination into the military life, which means learning rank structure, customs and courtesies, dress and appearance, reporting, all things you'll have to know for the rest of your career. All the rest is developing an ability to work with a sense of urgency, thinking under pressure, working as an individual and a leader.

Also, I wonder, does entering a program such as Army Basic label you as a recruit or something, e.g., do you get put on the list of people that can be sent to some war somewhere?
Whether you get sent to war or not really depends on the job you choose and where you are stationed at.
Once you sign your papers you go to the next basic training session available. After you go to AIT to learn your military job - these may vary depening on whatever branch of service you enter.
But you don't get to go to Basic Training until you enlist.
Then you are in the Army until your contract is up - unless you sign on to stay in longer.

Lol Slackland is the one place I have the most memories from, my flight had the most fun man.
I'm 236th Combat Communications, Ground Radio 2E153. My basic was before BEAST and it was 6 weeks instead of 8. But from what I hear from the new airman, the new basic is much more laid back. My tech school was 10 months long, ugh...
Anyway, welcome to the world's greatest Air Force!
