I thought he killed himself because he never wanted all the fame..
I don't know about everyone else, but if you have a very successful band you are going to become famous in some point in time.
If you don't like the fame.. the don't play the game.
This may make me sound like an asshole.. but I'm only speaking how I feel on the issue.
I do like a few of the songs by Nirvana; but the band just isn't that high up on my music list - never really have been. =|

Watching 240 guys talk trash about cavaliers is like two retards having a slapfight over a sippy cup.
Kurt Cobain, alongside Jimi Hendrix, is probably the most overrated musical figure in the world. The Ramones come in close second.
Yeah i agree. Not trying to dis KC but just because his music got big doesnt mean he was really amazing. Id agree with Jimi Hendrix as well, although HE WAS amazing at guitar he is overrated. People worship him and surpass musicians such as Stevie Ray Vaughn.
People gave him credit because they know shit about guitarists. I doubt anyone knows who Mohammad Suicmez or Dave Mustaine is..at least the people ranking guitarists.
i've never heard anyone say that kurt cobain's music was good because of his guitar playing.
that wasn't it at all.
it was great because of his lyrics and emotion in his singing. it was great because it was unpretentious and so different from the prevailing hair bands of the 80s.
it was timing more than anything.. people were ready for a different kind of music that they could relate to.
he (kind of unwillingly) embodied the rejection and anger and broken heart of a whole generation.
but anyway i'm not gonna go into this.
it's obvious that most people here weren't a part of it, and no real point in explaining it beyond that it wasn't his guitar playing that made his music important to so many people.

they'll never see me coming.. life is a sequence of tragedies, inconsistent only by fleeting, elusive moments of pleasure,
serving only to ensure absolute vulnerability to the pain of their inevitable absence.
Well said blood-doll, at least one person gets it.

"Today a young man on acid realized that all matter is merely energy condensed to a slow vibration. That we are all one consciousness experiencing itself subjectively. There is no such thing as death, life is only a dream, and we are the imagination of ourselves. Here's Tom with the weather."

Not really..tons of Metal bands back then, and even before Nirvana put out that portrait. It's just the people's fault for only listening to stuff that got through TV/Radio and not looking for what they wanted by themselves.
it's funny you say that cause nirvana started out as thousands of peoples' alternative to the stuff on the radio/tv.
but then the media got wise and picked him out for their poster boy.
he always had trouble with it because he was against the mainstream music culture.
but the more people that heard him, the more fans he gathered.
he sang what people felt and they rallied behind him.
i agree that there were lots of other good bands in the 80s (3 of my very favorite bands started in the mid/late 80s) but nirvana had the combination of appeal (what i previously posted) and exposure that led to its huge acceptance.
the change to a different mainstream genre has, in the past, many times been personified by a single artist or "cultural icon"
i can't understand the appeal of elvis, but i still understand why he came to have such broad appeal.
it doesn't even matter if you can't or don't want to understand or accept it.
i said i wasn't gonna try to explain it anymore, and i'm failing at that.
i just couldn't help replying to that media thing, because kurt really did have trouble accepting it.
and i can just anticipate your response, similar to a previuos one: oh he deserved it for trying to be a successful rockstar.. he didn't anticipate his success he just wanted to make music.
but it's like someone trying to explain hanana montanna or something to me.. i just don't care at all. i'm sure you don't care about cobain, so what's the point of talking about it.
to some of us, he mattered. the end
i'm seriously not replying again

If you liked Kurt Cobain's music, good, that is something you enjoy and I'm not going to say that his music sucked, but his guitar skills werent anything special, neither was his music in general to me, but people find what they want so there you go.
If people could relate to his music in the time great, but that doesnt include everyone.
Dont feel bad for someone that killed themselves, unless they had mental problems. Voluntary drug use mixed with obsession over a girl is not a good mixture. Him killing himself because he couldnt deal with fame, his drug addiction, and a girl is his own fault.
If you like him for his lyrics but not his musical talent that's your choice and not someone elses to judge. But in my opinion he wasnt all that great, and his lyrics werent that great imo either.
You can have good music and bad lyrics and it might still be okay. But not so good music with "good" lyrics usually isnt all that okay. Some powerchords and "decent" lyrics doesnt constitute for amazing music in my book. But to each his own.
Umm..Nirvana's music practically embody the mainstream passed their first two albums. They went from a slightly Metalish approach, to complete mainstream music, so don't tell me they were against it or anything. That's what I say.
I hardly find the idea of debating with someone that doesn't want to reply appealing, so whatever.
All mainstream music isnt bad, you make it seem that way. Most but not all. Also, what is mainstream in some countries is unheard of in others, just sayin. But KC in my opinion wasnt anything special, I have never wanted to just sit down and listen to Nirvana.
I feel nothing when listening to nirvana. As far as I'm concerned "KC" isn't even worth talking about. I will defend Jimi till the end though. No one can make a guitar sing like he could, emotion in guitar playing is just as important as technical skill, you can do arpeggio sweeps all day and still not invoke the kind of powerful feelings that castles made of sand or voodoo chile did. Michael Angelo Batio is widely considered one of the most skilled guitarist to ever walk the earth and even he tips his hat to Jimi (seen here). I wont dispute that Dave is an awesome guitarist (Call of Ktulu, nuff said) but I've only ever heard one guitarist that was on par with the level of expression Jimi put forth in his works, and thats Don Ross.
Michael Angelo is a silly player. Not one musically knowledgeable person would tell you that he's got skills. Delve deep into Metal, and listen to the guitarists before putting out your judgment; because trust me, you can find better than Jimi.
Metal has some genuises when it coes to skills in guitar playing, but Jimi plays a different style of music, at which he was argueably the best at. Although I still gotta say, Stevie Ray Vaughn > Jimi Hendrix. Yeah they played different styles, but both played blues/rock, but Hendrix was more psychadelic of course. Thats my opinion.
I don't know about everyone else, but if you have a very successful band you are going to become famous in some point in time.
