I've heard from my AP Literature class today (this is how I get my news while not watching TV) about this funny virus (worm, to be more specific). Apparently, it managed to infect about 9 million Windows computers at some point due to unpatched security holes. What's funny is that my Windows XP is SP2 and hasn't been updated for ages, but I never got the virus. My mom did, though, judging from the symptoms (antivirus websites blocked, Firewall turned off, etc.). Although she still somehow got rid of it.
I am running Ubuntu 90% of the time and my Windows can no longer connect to the wireless network (lol...), so I am not worried.
I'm wondering what you guys think and if any of you met this virus. Mind you, it likes traveling via USB drives, so a secure web browser and an updated Windows may not necessarily be enough. The website works via attacking services.exe (and we know a lot about Windows and running programs in administrative mode), merging with them, and running copies of itself.
I think the fact that it managed to infect the French Navy is saying something about computer illiteracy, lol...
Lol@it infecting the French Navy. First Germany, now a computer virus.
I haven't had any virus in quite a long time (knock on wood). My old PC did get infected with a virus which affected system32.exe though, but that was because my Kaspersky was shit. I have McCafee now and it's pretty damn great.
Last virus I got was with my old PC, the one with a 30 GB HDD. =] Now I never get anything, not because of antivirus either, really. I'm sure it helps, but I know what to stay away from now.
Well I hate to jinx myself but I haven't had any viruses since switching to Vista. Not that it was by choice. I bought a new computer and it had Vista and my hardware won't allow a downgrade if I want working drivers.
My vista experience has been so-so. My xp just died one day, and when I got my hp slimline (w/vista) it got blue screen of death every hour. So my new slimline was free.
i cought it on my crappy XP and crappy vista. its really nothing. its supposed to take ur info and send it to the creator at midnight tonight. (april fools day!) but seriously. it is easy to remove its in wondows32/conflicker. easy to find AND remove. if AV is disabled by it, remove it manually, thats wut i had to do on my XP. it couldnt deactivate my Vista AV.
lol diablo 3 will be released in may... april fools... yeah, i think the whole conficker virus is just something someone did to scare everyone and laugh at everyones reaction....
I heard about Conficker a while ago now... Another windows flaw being exploited... win win windows for the win
I hope the maker of Conficker has a sense of humor and pulls off an awesome April Fools prank
Now, if Conficker itself is a lie, and doesn't exist, and is the April Fools prank... then thats the lamest joke ever
But if the maker spams pictures of horse porn onto 10 million computers across the world that would make me laugh heartily
My computer is getting it's ass handed to it by viruses.
No doubt it has the conficker virus in it somewhere.
200 dollar laptop with no antivirus, no antispyware, and from 98' or so.
Aaaaaawwww Yeeeeah.
Using it as a temp computer while I save up to get a new one, it's suprisingly fast though, runs most older games with no problems ^_^.

Or so they say... Maybe its just the lamest April Fools joke ever
That part.
If everyone's getting their info from Wikipedia about it.
Judging from the amount of reference pages on that wiki site and the dates of some of them. I dont think it could be an Aprils Fools prank
Edit - Theres even an article about Microsoft offering $250k USD for who made it
jk
